Think Your Vote Matters? Think Again

Editor’s Note: The non-partisan Web site “Opposing Views” offers readers a look at all sides of the debate on a variety of issues.  This is the part of ongoing series of posts from the Web site that will appear in the FOX Forum.

By Dr. John R. Koza
Chairman, National Popular Vote

You’ve become enthralled with John McCain and Barack Obama’s struggle to win the presidency. Along with record numbers of Americans, you tuned into the debates, attended rallies and registered to vote, many of you for the first time. Yet in all likelihood your vote won’t matter because this historic election will be decided by voters in only six or so closely divided “battleground states.”
The reason the vast majority of states don’t matter in presidential elections stems from a winner-take-all rule (Nebraska and Maine being the notable exceptions). This rule awards all of a state’s electoral votes to the candidate who receives the most popular votes. Consequently, presidential candidates have no reason to poll, visit, advertise, organize, or even pay attention to the concerns of states where they are comfortably ahead or hopelessly behind.  This harsh effect of the winner-take-all rule became clear in the first week of October when McCain’s Michigan state director Al Ribeiro explained McCain’s abrupt cessation of campaigning in Michigan: “The campaign must decide where it can best utilize its limited resources with the goal of winning nationally.”

Of course, voters in 36 of the 50 states never mattered, even before the 2008 presidential election began. Michigan just discovered the harsh political reality a little later. As early as spring 2008, The New York Times reported that both major political parties were in agreement that there would be at most 14 battleground states in 2008.  In 2004, candidates concentrated over two-thirds of their money and campaign visits in just five states; over 80% in nine states; and over 99% of their money in 16 states.

The best and most direct way to fix our broken system is to elect the president by a national popular vote. Under a national popular vote, every person’s vote, in every state, would be equally important, regardless of political party.

Every vote would be equal, and politicians would be forced to address the concerns of every voter.  There would be no red states, no blue states, and no battleground states.

It’s crucial to remember that the winner-take-all rule is not in the U.S. Constitution, but simply state law. That’s why we support the National Popular Vote bill, which would guarantee the presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and the District of Columbia). The National Popular Vote bill would take effect only when enacted by states possessing enough electoral votes to elect a President (270 of 538). It is currently being debated in all 50 states and has been enacted by four states- Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, and Maryland.

It’s time to reform the current system and do what more than 70 percent of the public has long supported – elect the president by a national popular vote.

Mccain, Palin & Biden already shown their medical records.

How difficult for Obama to show his med. record & birth certificate? Seems pretty difficult for him to do that simple thing - what more for the economy?

Power of CROOKED underground ACORN - SHUT THEM DOWN PERMANENTLY!

Change, change , change we hope that he stick to his campaign promises and not change his mind when he’s elected president.

Power of CROOKED underground ACORN was leading.

If the people of this great nation is READY to accept that their beloved country will have a reputation throughout the world like a STINKING ACORN starting ‘09 January then vote for Obama. A 800,000.00 thousand U.S. dollars contribution for this organization was a HUGE AMOUNT of money for not expecting any kind of RETURN.

Why are so many sites blocked about (Michael Signator) it is said he donated much money to Obama and he is the new mystery name in Obama’s campaign. Also lives very close to him. What are they hiding. It states that he could be the next president for the next election.

Comment by Bob

I agree with Debbie, I cannot believe Americans are even considering voting for Obama. Hillary Clinton was so against him when she was running, everything he was for she was against. Then all of a sudden she changes her mind? Makes one wonder. If Hillary thought his ways were so bad, then I agree with her still and stand by my decision.

Comment by Debbie

I believe Mccain is ahead. Obama is a liar and I don’t trust him. I believe he has control over Acorn votes. He planned this ahead of time. Voter registration fraud and all the money he is getting just might be coming from Obama Bin Laden!

I am voting for Mccain for the future of my children and grandchildren. We need to keep war out of America and God in America.

Since Obama expanded the welfare program, lets all stay in our house, watch TV the whole day and just wait for our welfare money from the Feds. That’s COOL yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh! It’s Thanksgiving and Christmas the whole year…..and as long Obama will be the president….We’re ALL equal because those people working most of the time will surely share their wealth (whether they like it or not) for those lazy big fat ass DOIN’ NOTHING.

If they’re saying that ACORN is not trying to destroy the democracy of this coming election. What is their MAIN OBJECTIVE by inputing voter’s false names, multiple registration 5/10/20/50 even 73times each person, on 13 states. The problem with these groups was that they can DO illegal activities then by the time they are caught - they have a guts to defend or argue the accusations. As if they are true righteous group,…………. DON’T FOOL THE AMERICAN PEOPLE! You can do those things in the third world countries but not here in the USA!

Each company must have the responsibilty to PROTECT his name/dignity especially to illegal activities. In a first place why did they hire a junkies people to conduct this serious responsibilty?
Every comp. should have the RIGHT SOP to train then conduct the voting registration. I’m trying to think what kind of training they taught w/ their workers. Men it’s EVERYWHERE not 10 people/cities
but hundreds of thousands - it’s not mistaken but it was intended to commit fraud.

Obama’s campaign side have the option to CHOOSE the right people for that work? Whatever you say, ACORN IS FRAUD!!!!!

THEY SHOULD KNOW WHAT IS RIGHT and WRONG.

Who can we write to in order to start a compaign in California to change this WINNER-TAKE-ALL RULE that is stiffling our RIGHT to elect our president as guaranteed by our constitution. Since four of our states have enacted the Popular Vote rule, it’s my opinion ALL STATES would best be served to follow suit.

Comment by Reality Check

While the overall impact or false voter Registration is foul, try to see what’s happened in perspective:

Acorn has hired SOME dubious persons to conduct the efforts… Junkies, Ex Cons, recovering alcoholics, poor people etc. and all of them legit or not are paid on a piece meal basis… that is going to incur cheating. It’s the way the system of renumeration of these workers that is at fault.

Ergo: It’s not a Democratic plot… it’s a human nature failing. Also to be noted, it’s a Voter REGISTRATION foul up and not a case of voter fraud [yet..].
It is being caught by the Voter Registration Centers… If not, there wouldn’t be such an outcry. The system is apparently working as intended. It’s not as bad as it’s being portrayed. I’m not defending the Democrats nor am I condemning them… I am just asking that the blame be put where it deserves.

Acorn needs to revise how it compensates it’s workers.

Comment by Raynes

Democrats false 10% plus leading polls doesn’t need Dr. ACORN pADDING illegal registration if they really thinks they have strong campaign. Doubting their own strong campaign - WHY?

This ‘08 presidential election is the dirtiest ever in the US history - thourough investigation should be
conducted about this fraudaulent move because IT’S A SERIOUS MATTER!

MSNBC is not objective, very left wing biased

FOX is not objective, very right wing biased

There are numerous 3rd party academic articles which have analyzed the inception of FOX news. No secret about it, they are totally a right wing media channel. You people have to use other sources of media before you make up your mind. For example, look at the polling done for the last presidential debate. The question was who won the debate?

CBS News: Obama won 39%, McCain won 25%, Draw 36%

Insider Advantage: Obama won 42%, McCain won 41%, Undecided: 17%

CNN: Obama “did better” 51%, McCain “did better” 38%

NBC’s focus group of undecided Pennsylvania voters had the Illinois Democrat winning by roughly a 60-40

SurveyUSA interviewed 741 debate watchers in the state of Washington, 54 percent of whom thought Obama was the “clear winner” compared with McCain’s 29 percent.

FOX news poll - 76000 votes = 87% McCain and 11% obama

Every single poll done by the news media, and objective polling sources states Obama won the debate. Only Fox news polls states McCain won and by an absolutely un-realistic margin. Fox news may be a good source for information and they are certainly a great place for conservatives to get fired up.

BUT OBJECTIVE? ….. DONT THINK SO. Sorry the “fair and balanced” argument is a loser.

Bush and his administrations policies and incompetence is the reason why I am voting democrat. Republicans f’d everything up and I dont trust them to fix a problem that they cant admit they created.

REPUBLICAN VOTING FOR OBAMA:

You’ve obviously not voted in several states, as I have over the years. In some states I’ve had to show a picture ID with my voter registration number, which is immediately hand-handwritten on my ballot. In other states I’ve just walked in and given my voter registration address. The rules for administering an election are left to the States, as long as the rules are Constitutional.

I personally feel better with a picture ID required at the polling place, in all states. You certainly have to have one to drive a car, and voting is more important than driving!

It would never happen, but there should be a five question test the voter has to pass before s/he is given a ballot. The first question would be to name the Vice President of the United States. A PEW research study recently found that 70% of voting age Americans can’t even do that.

The McCain campaign should file a lawsuit to have ACORN investigated. Why they haven’t, or at least filed a complaint with the FEC, like immediately, boggles my mind!!

ACORN is a big concern.

but remember….. Fraudulent registration forms does not = Fraudulent votes.

Everyone must show a valid form of ID before they are allowed to cast a ballot. I dont think that anyone is going to be able to show a valid ID for Micky Mouse.

You people need to use other sources of information. You are too entranced by FOX news and their severely biased coverage.

And before you attack me for being a Republican voting Democrat. This is why

I am a fiscal conservative. I believe in stronger state rights and less federal government. George W. Bush and his Neo-Con friends changed the face of conservative politics, for the worst. Under him we have

Two wars that have cost over 4,000 lives of our young and brave American men and woman. And have cost you and me over 600 billion dollars to date with no end in site under a McCain administration.

Obscene government spending and corporate de-regulation (i.e. SEC head Cox and his predecessor) that has helped plunge us into a financial crisis that has unfortunately given us absolutely no choice but to Nationalize (cringe) our financial system, or face the worst economic disaster EVER! Dont give me that argument that the financial crisis was the dems fault…. That is BS. Many governmental economist like Nouriel Roubini had warned the Bush Administration and Secretary Paulson profusely that we were heading for this specific disaster 2 years ago. They wrote these economists off, but these economists got it spot on. These economists also have stated that Obama’s plan is the more agressive plan that has more potential of righting the ship

An incompetent administration who’s response to hurricane Katrina spelled out the Bush Administration’s true intentions.

An Imperial administration with the most wicked and powerful Vice President that has been the spear head of all our foreign policy.

The promotioin of the use of torture and the stripping of legal due process. Not very CHRIST LIKE.

I could spend all day on a list. I cant think of one positive thing the Bush administration as done for this country.

George W. Bush is an ignorant fool.

McCain had my vote until he selected Palin as a running mate. She is also an ignorant and un-intelligent fool. I am not risking another disaster in the oval office, if McCain doesnt make it through a term in office.

Obama is our best choice.

the bible talks in the old testament against women leading the church mostly. jesus said that you should love god first above all others. and then love your neighbor as yourself. if you loved your neighbor as yourself you wouldn’t have that kinda mindset. and by the way they asked for a response to the subject so where that answer came from we’ll never know. the point here is that i live in arkansas and i shouldn’t have to move to california new york or florida to make my vote count for as much. or any of these ever shifting battle ground states. every vote should count, one the same as the next and the sad thing is that it will take a candidate winning the popular vote by a large margin and still losing the election for anybody that can do something about it to do something about it. we the people cann’t change it because our voice obviously doesn’t matter. just the voice of the politicians that we vote for that are supposed to make our voice heard.

you should not vote for mccain because he asked a woman to be his vice presidential candidate. this woman will be in a position of power, and that quite simply is going against the Bible. this woman should be cleaning our homes, not sitting first in line to be president. it is God’s word that women are inferior to men, so a vote for mccain is a vote against God. the Bible also teaches that the white race is superior, so a vote for obama is a vote against the word of God. the answer - write in Jesus for ‘08.

It’s already started! How about having secret police going by the name of a “public service organization”?
That’s what you have to look forward to. Go to “youtube” and check out the films of Obama and “Madame Overbite”,also known as Michelle, ridiculing America. The website is not hard to find and should open the eyes of anybody with an IQ of about ten. If he wins,we all lose. If he loses, there will be violence in this country the likes of which has never been seen and we all still lose. The very fact that he is running for President poses unforseen tragedies for all of us.

They asked Obama supporters these questions:

“Are you more for Obama’s policy because he’s pro-life? Or because he thinks should stay in Iraq and finish this war?”

Listen to the answers!!!! Hillarious!!!!

Steve,

If you’d like, give me your email address and I will send you my address. That way you can send me some of your hard earned money. Let’s redistribute the wealth so everyone is equal. You just tell me how much you have. I’ll tell you how much I have. If I have less than you, you have to send me enough so that I have the same amount as you. I mean come on, that’s exactly what you candidate told this plumber he wanted to do.

Karl Marx would be proud of Obama.

McCain supporters say they’re angry. (A lot of Americans are…have you looked at what the dems did to our economy?) Call Obama an Arab, and when Ayers’ name is mentioned, they yell “terrorist” which is exactly what Ayers is; he’s a domestic terrorist like McVeigh. It’s BIG news. They’re labeled as out of control or rabid.

Obama supporters yell “Stone her!” at a Palin rally (a threat of physical violence), and wear inflammatory tshirts saying “Sarah is a C***” and you hear nothing about it. They vandalize McCain offices, they burn McCain signs in people’s yards (a crime), and where is the media?

Steve,

Christopher Hitchens, erstwhile former Nation columnist turned Iraq warrior

Christopher Hitchens? Come on now…

First, Hitchens is NOT an Iraq warrior. He’s a 59 year old BRITISH author. His endorsement of Obama means what?

And Buckley’s boy? Puhlease….He is relevant in the political realm in what way? Oh, his satirical writings. Those novels of irrelevant information that do nothing to shape policy, or to enhance America in any way.

Eisenhower…her grandfather would be so proud to see his granddaughter endorsing a socialist, I’m sure.

Do you wanna list of McCain endorsers Steve? Hint: They outnumber Obama’s, and include more than a few newspapers and industries, and they don’t include The Nation of Islam.

Lex,

You are an embarassment to your party - you sound like the woman at McCain’s rally, saying “I don’t trust him. He’s a a a a He’s an Arab”. You could hear the crowd groan and moan and laugh. McCain did one of the few honorable things he’s done in this cmpaign and told that woman and the rest of America that Obama is not an Arab, he is a decent man, a decent family man, and should be treated with respect. Read something besides Fox News or the National Enquirer. Sheesh!!

Susan Eisenhower is more than just another disappointed Republican. She is also Ike’s granddaughter and a dedicated member of the party who has urged her fellow Republicans in the past to stick with the GOP. But now Eisenhower, who runs an international consulting firm, is endorsing Barack Obama. She has no plans to officially leave the Republican Party. But in Eisenhower’s view, Obama is the only candidate who can build a national consensus on the issues most important to her—energy, global warming, an aging population and America’s standing in the world.

“Barack Obama will really be in a singular position to attract moderate Republicans,” she told NEWSWEEK. “I wanted to do what many people did for my grandfather in 1952. He was hugely aided in his quest for the presidency by Democrats for Eisenhower. There’s a long and fine tradition of crossover voters.”

The Tennessean newspaper in Nashville endorsed Democrat Barack Obama on Sunday:

“This newspaper believes Obama would be an inspiring choice at an extraordinary time for the nation. The country needs a fresh, energetic face in the White House. Every race for president is important, but the current confluence of events, including the war on terror, mountainous challenges in the economy and a growing strain upon the nation’s health care system make the current race a call for vigorous new approaches and enthusiasm. …

Throughout a lengthy, trying campaign, Obama has simply emerged as the right person at the right time to lead the nation when leadership is at a premium. The nation could ask for no more. Obama has the opportunity to lift the United States at a time when its burdens are heavy. His campaign has carried a theme of ‘Yes We Can,’ which is exactly the message the nation needs to hear most now.”

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch endorsed Democrat Barack Obama on Sunday:

“Over the past nine months, Mr. Obama, the junior senator from Illinois, has emerged as the only truly transformative candidate in the race. In the crucible that is a presidential campaign, his intellect, his temperament and equanimity under pressure consistently have been impressive. He has surrounded himself with smart, capable advisers who have helped him refine thorough, nuanced policy positions.

In a word, Mr. Obama has been presidential.

Meanwhile, Mr. McCain, the senior senator from Arizona, became the incredible shrinking man. He shrank from his principled stands in favor of a humane immigration policy. He shrank from his universal condemnation of torture and his condemnation of the politics of smear.

He even shrank from his own campaign slogan, “Country First,” by selecting the least qualified running mate since the Swedenborgian shipbuilder Arthur Sewall ran as William Jennings Bryan’s No. 2 in 1896.”

No, one man one vote surely won’t work. It allows for a candidate to canvas NY, CA, TX, FL and a handful of other states that would provide a plurality. If you were a candidate, would you spend your money in a half dozen states or 20 states?

I’ve looked around a bit on whacko sites like CNN and Huffington Post and not surprisingly found the denizens under the bridges there to be positively rabid. Yes for liberals it’s always been about personal destruction of conservatives but those nuts are rabid. Reading some of their hate posts makes it easy to imagine the foaming at the mouth, the bugged out eyes and the sleepless look from nights of raging on hate sites.

As an aside, I’m very disappointed that we aren’t hearing more about Obama’s dark associations. It seems Obama’s people can link McCain with members of his audience (whom he has never met) yet when McCain tires to link Obama with Wright, Ayres and the multitude of scumbags, he’s a racist or not following the script. If McCain loses this election and we surrender America to the socialists, it will be because he refused to make the most important issue the most important issue: that we need someone who will be honest with us much more than we need one person’s plan versus another.
