So What If Sarah Palin Used a Speechwriter?

Disdaining Sarah Palin’s speech last night because she had a speechwriter is one of the lamest criticisms of her performance last night. The Obama campaign sent out a press release highlighting that a speechwriter, Matthew Scully, had crafted much of her speech last night — as if that should make people discount the whole thing. Then many of the TV analysts brought this up in their commentary sneering that Scully had written a good speech for her to read but all she had done was deliver someone else’s lines.

Well, Abraham Lincoln wrote his own speeches, (although he did get people like William Seward to help edit his First Inaugural) but most politicians use speechwriters. Even the saintly Barack Obama uses speechwriters. Andrew McCarthy reminds us of that whole kerfuffle when it turned out that Obama was using the same lines from Governor Deval Patrick of Massachusetts when he denied that his speeches were “just words.” Remember Hillary Clinton’s jab at “change you can Xerox”? And the reason he used the same lines was because the two men share a common speechwriter: David Axelrod.

The speech worked because it wasn’t some manufactured paint by numbers speech that would have been just the same if McCain had picked Pawlenty. Instead it was built around her life and accomplishments. She was the one who lived in a small town. She was the one who went into politics and fought against the GOP establishment to root out corruption. She is the one who understands energy and Alaska’s North Slope. A good speechwriter fits the speech to the voice of the one giving the speech.

Perhaps it would be a better world if no politicians ever used a speechwriter, but we don’t inhabit that world. Maybe your local city councilman doesn’t employ speechwriters, but at this level, they all have help. Every big speech that a politician gives, we get the same story about how they’re going through the written speech editing it and changing this and that to fit their styles. Perhaps they are. None of them like to appear as just actors reading their lines. But they’re also using someone else to help them craft the foundation of their speeches. Bet on it.

If all it took to deliver a speech was to read the words your speechwriter wrote, then no one would be talking about Obama’s superior speech-giving skills compared to McCain’s. Some people have it and some, well, just don’t.

Our country has a long history of famous figures using words written for them by others. I figure that if it was okay for George Washington to have James Madison and Alexander Hamilton write his Farewell Address (which he then went through and edited himself, of course) then it’s okay for today’s lesser politicians.

Have you noticed so many of the commentors who are against Palin are men? I guess the Democrats have a point. If you are against Obama your are a racist. If you are against Palin your sexist.”

Well just to clarify I am a white woman, I am not a dem, rep, or a liberal and I am against Palin’s issues, history, distorted truths, and lies.

Listen up wheter you are a Democrat or Rebulican White, Black, male or female it does not much matter. What is important is the state of our country and all I want from this election is for someone to get in there and do whatever it is they need to do to get this country back on the right track. If you do not realize it our country is headed to be another third world country. This county can not afford to go to war with any other nation without starting the draft and you all need to realize that. We can not afford to go to war with any other nation because financially we do not have the money and our military is already stretched to thin. Our young men and woman in the armed services are tired and worn out and for God sakes they need a break. How long do you expect them to carry the weight of war on their shoulders? How long must their families be seperated from them? So while some are quick to rattle the sabers and start something we can not finish we need a cool head in office that will make going to war the last resort. Or get ready to have you children be drafted.

As far as Shara Palin no one really knows who she is, what her politics are and what she really believes in. All this baby drama is a distraction from what we really should know about her. From what little we do know about her it seems as if she has been stretching the truth a little to often. We need leaders that we can trust and believe in. That does not seem to be her. Grant you she is female and has a sharp tounge but that does not make a VP. She left her small town where she was mayor 20 million dollars in debt, after having a surplus before she came to office. She did not sell that jet on E-Bay even though she tried, but she did sell it at a lost. Was her husband a member of a political party that wanted Alaska to secede from the US and become an independent nation, if so that is unconsitutional. Did she abuse her powers as govenor, even if she felt personally justified. If she did we can not afford someone in office that will abuse their power, look at where that got us the last eight years. Do we need more of the same? We know that she hired a lobbist to go to Washington to get as many earmarks for her state as she possibly could. So can she speak to us about reform? We also know that she wanted to ban books from the library does that not go against our First Admendment Rights. If you fight for the Second Admendment then we have to fight for them all. We as citizens needs to demand that from our elected officials. There are just so many unanswered questions about her. We do not know enough about her to put her a breath away from the Presidency. In the 20 months that Obama has been running all his dirt has hit the fan and we had the time to find out about him and all he did or didn’t do. McCain has been in office for 26 years and we know him, Biden has been in just as long and we know him. But who is Shara Palin we have a right to know, we need to know if we are going to vote in an intelligent manner. We need to know the facts. I suggest that no press time should be allowed to her until she answers those questions from the press and who cares about all that baby drama that is between them and their God. If she can’t handle 5 kids and the White House it will not be the American citizens who will suffer, it will be her family and one day she will have to answer for that as well. What Ameirca needs now more than ever is the to know the whole truth. Who you are, and what you believe in. We should not be side tracked by a pretty package. All that glitters is not gold. We also need to know excatly what we are up against and how bad things really are. Republican or Democrat can not say for sure just how they plan to change things. because until they get behind that desk in the Oval Office they don’t know how bad things really are. We know that the Bush Administration was making alot of secret deals. So whom ever takes that high seat may have alot of unexpected problems to deal with and try to sort out. Just because you have a war record and stories does not mean that you are qualifed to run this country, that is yet another smoke screen. I give McCain respect for serving his country and he has been blessed for surviving those five years as a POW, but it does not mean that this country owes him the Oval Office. So let’s get real about that. This election should be about who do you trust and I realize it is hard to trust any politican now days. This election should be about who has the vision and judgement to take this country forward. Each man running for Presisent has an ego and that is not a problem or shouldn’t be. Each man is arrogrant and that should not be made into a problem. What person who thinks they can be President does not have an ego or arrogrant. That is yet another distraction. Stop being side tracked. Stop just listening to sound bites. Each man loves their country and wants to put country first. Think about this McCain war hero who scaraficed for this country. Obama a man of dark skin who has recieved death threats and harm to his family since he first made his announcment just because of the color of his skin. He is putting his life on the line every day because he loves his country. He too should be looked at as an American hero. Isn’t everyone just waiting to hear that shot cry out each time he is in a crowd. I know I am. But he beleives in America, and it’s people and he wants to serve the US and is willing to die to do it. So making him out to be someone who does not love this county is ignorrant and you are not looking at the whole picture. This man has been fighting a silent war all his life just because of the color of his skin and until we change our preceptions he will continue to fight a battle that White America knows little about. Obama deserves and has earned the same respect as McCain.

So let this election be about the issures and who you trust and stop getting side tracked by petty things. This is the most important vote of your lifetime and you should not waste your vote on petty things and distractions. You as American citizens needs to demand civility from both parties in this elections and all others. This one especially because these two men both being Senators will need to work together. These two men both will need to reach out to the other Party to get things done. They both said they wanted to run a different campaign we should make them hold to that. That is the first step of getting America back on track. There is no place or time for the dirty negative politics there is to much at stake. Our future depends on both of these men and both of these Parties. This is not a red and blue America this is the United States of America

Palin, that perpetuated the media attacks because no one, and i mean NO ONE talked about her until she was named Mccains’ running mate

Seems her speechwriters took a few days off after the convention.

It seems some of Sarh Palin’s self described accomplishments aren’t exactly what she claimed. Misrepresenting yourself during introduction isn’t the best way to gain a lot of trust. Do you think it was the speech writers fault?

I work for a State legislature and often write speeches for our legislators - both parties, both houses. It’s what we do. So what? I don’t put my own words in their mouths. I write speeches for them based on what they want to say. Speechwriting isn’t easy and it isn’t fast. I have the time and ability to do it for them - they don’t. I have never known a politician to use a speech they didn’t like or offered opinions contrary to their own. The politician has to “own” the speech and he/she always has the final word (no pun intended) on whether the speech hits the mark. Sara Palin had an excellent speech writer, but she’s the one who had to deliver it. If she didn’t believe those words or like the approach, she would have never pulled it off. The speech was written for her, but it was her speech. Trust me! There are very few politicians who can write a good speech, but that doesn’t make them any less effective or valuable as public servants. That goes for both sides, Ds and Rs.

I suppose it doesn’t matter that Axelrod wrote much of Obama’s speech? They all use speechwriters and the content is carefully vetted by the candidate. Never seems to have been a problem before.

Oooh, let’s talk about Joe Biden and speeches! Why write a speech, why hire a speechwriter when you can just copy WORD FOR WORD an entire campaign from another politician! Does the name Neil Kinnock mean anything?

As for Obama - I guess if saying a lot words but actually saying nothing counts a lot, he’s a total winner. But this is the classic battle of style over substance. The emporer has no clothes, Obamatrons.

Folks, the irony here is that the so-called “maverick” McCain-Palin ticket is using Bush’s speechwriter. Repeat: the MAVERICKS are using BUSH’S speechwriter. So, the fact that someone else helped write a speech makes her unfit to be VP? You do remember that Joe Biden had to end his own race for the presidency for STEALING a speech from someone else, among other ethical lapses like lying about his eductation, don’t you? What she did wasn’t plagarism. What Joe did was, pure and simple.

By naming Biden, Obama is saying that having ethics is no longer a qualification for higher office. That’s change we’re supposed to believe in? You Obamaniacs must be insane.

You seem to miss the point Jaymz. ALL politicians use speech writers. As some have already said….the politician puts forth their ideas, of what they want to convey, and the speech writer fills in the blanks. If Palin is guilty of a crime on this, than all politicians are guilty.

Amazing how you spin this. Only she who’s from the “sticks” is guilty of this? I’m from the sticks, and I’d guess roughly 60% or better in this country , are from the sticks. It’s that elitist attitude, toward those that dare to live in rural areas, so they can raise the food, and tend to the animals that you’ll eventually eat, so you can live another day to be a narrow minded hypocrit.

You might want to google Obama, and Biden, and add plagarism to your search engine. You’ll have a nice little surprise waiting for you!

It doesn’t really matter who wrote Sarah Palin’s speech. What matters is that the words and their delivery were shrill, offensive and disrespectful. And I’m not really sure why everyone’s afraid to say that — because she’s a wife and mother? Hiding behind that shield is setting women back even further.

Wow. I had no idea until I read this article then looked around that people were upset that Palin used a speechwriter. It really surprised me!

Sure, it would be nice if politician’s wrote their own speeches - their personality would show and the words would be more authentic. It would also be nice if they (especially at the higher levels) did their own research before making decisions, read all the reports that came to them, personally evaluated all sides of issues that they must take stands on… etc, etc. Unfortunately, these jobs are too big for one person. Even as candidates, the rely on staff members to develop their positions. I think I recall hearing that Obama had a couple hundred foreign policy advisors… but I could be wrong.

So, before we demand that politicians write their own speeches, we should consider what is asked of them. Further, if we’re going to make them do something else themselves, there’s a whole list of things to choose from that may be more important than what words they use.

And, after all, they still take responsibility for their words - original, or not.

The reason people are concerned is not that she used a speech writer. The concern is that much (if not most) of the speech was written before she was even picked. So it did not reflect her views at all. Most politicians have a viewpoint and then use speech writers to put that viewpoint into eloquent words. They do not simply read someone elses lines.

Having a prepared speech that is not written by you and one that you just read, does not tell me how you feel or what you think. It only tells me what you are being told to say. It like you have been programed. Obama sometimes has a problem with alot of UH’s but he does write his own speeches. He says what is within him. I realize not everyone has that talent or gift and can’t put two senctences together. But if they could just speak from their hearts that would tell me alot. Shara is being programed on what she should believe and I find that hard to believe in her as a person. She is being given the Party line and that tells me nothing about who she is. She is a robot all wound up and set infront of a stage. When she speaks even to knock the other party she reads it from text. If it is what she truly believes it should just roll off her tounge, as easy a that bridge to nowhere did, or sellig the jet on E-Bay. She just does not apperar to be genuine and she is a robot that has been programed. I need to hear from her in her own words. I don’t need to see an actress saying her lines. This is not a movie, this is the real deal. It makes me wonder how much she really knows about anything besides hockey or moose cleaning.

I am responding to CH0 and the youtube link about Obama/Kerry being the most liberal senator. I guess we can’t believe youtube either because Senator Obama didn’t take office until 2005. When the comments about Kerry were made, he wasn’t even elected so I guess he’s the most liberal Senator now.

Two words, Jon Favreau. Who is he? He is the head speechwriter of Obama’s speechwriting team. If you think that the McCain camp’s use of a speechwriter who has also been employed by the Bush administration somehow makes McCain, “just another Bush”, the Obama has no hope of being elected. That logic would make Obama, “just another Kerry.” Even Bush managed to beat Kerry.

Obviously, the use of this kind of logic demonstrates the intellectual gravitas of a large woodland mushroom. Speaking of this talking points assertion that McCain is just another Bush, which lemming wrote that in their brainstorming notebook? I can’t think of a single Republican of notable standing who is less like Bush. Republicans, in the past, have often questioned McCain’s republican loyalty, given how often he has bucked the party line on any number of issues and pieces of legislation. I’m still amazed that McCain ever had a chance to pull off a Republican nomination, much less do so in comfortable fashion. To anyone who has paid any attention to politics for more than the last several months (or the last several minutes, more likely), this claim is one of the more absurd that have been folded into the Democrat mantra.

On the subject of absurd assertions… I’m still waiting for someone to tell me what sort of “change” Obama refers to when he endlessly repeats the political candidate’s perpetual chant of change. When it comes to the McCain camp, I can image what they mean when they say change. Each half of that ticket has a demonstrated history of “bucking the system”. I may doubt their ability to bring change, since most change requires the cooperation of congress. Yes, that would be the same congress that has the dubious distinction of being the only political entity with a lower approval rating than the Bush administration, with the possible exception of Hati’s national government.

So, what change does Obama speak of? Changing the party affiliation of the oval office? That is the only thing I have been able to come up with. What little he has offered about his actual plans simply sounds like the same liberal policy platform used by almost every Democrat candidate since JFK, with the more modern add ons that we have come to expect over the last 16 years. Perhaps that is why I do not hear Obama talk of specifics very often. His campaign must assume that we already know what he has in mind since he is a Democrat. His staffers have spent more time on the floor in Washington than he has and he has picked one of the ultimate sources of “business as usual” to be his running mate. For his own part, his short track record indicates that he is basically a loyal, predictable tug, simply towing the more liberal party line of his peers. What change?

If an Obama supporter wants to assert that Gov. Palin is nothing more than a token pick, only made to appeal to women, bereft of any real qualifications, other than the ability to “talk pretty” when reading speeches… Seriously? I think they might want to avoid going down that road at all cost. Aside from the hysterically obvious hypocrisy of such an assertion, I don’t think it is a good idea to invite everyone to compare the presidential nominee to the other party’s VP pick. If you can’t win that comparison hands down, the perception becomes that the other party’s presidential pick must be much more qualified by default.

Frankly, the only positive thing I have ever even really heard Democrats assert about their own candidate is that he is, “a really good speaker.” Oh, that and he’ll bring change. Ummmm, ok…

For myself, the conventions served their purpose. They helped me decide who to vote for. I’m sure I am not the only one.

Having a speechwritier is normal for politicians-where has the media been. It is how the politician delivers the speech that is relevant. When it was found out that the teleprompter was ‘of a mind of it’s own’ on Wed. night that was pushed to the side and pooh-poohed. I found it amazing that she could make it seem so easy knowing what the circumstances were. If McCain/Palin are to be criticzed for using ‘evil speechwriters’ than the shoe most certain should be put on the other foot(Obama/Biden). If one were to only wear the RIGHT shoe then they walk with a bad limp- they need to balance it out with a LEFT shoe.

I would like to have some of what Johnny is smoking, for the following reasons:

A) Johnny is hallucinating, because Sarah Palin won’t answer questions. The GOP is shielding her from any kind of press conference. Somehow, even though they think she can’t handle real journalists, and is only capable of delivering prepared remarks, we’re supposed to think she can handle Putin. Good luck with that.

B) So Barack Obama says “umm.” Like him or not, you don’t get to be President of the Harvard Law Review by being an idiot, however much time it may take you to come up with a thoughtful, reasoned answer to a complex policy question. Something we’ll never see Sarah Palin do; because apparently the pit bull is too delicate for the rough-and-tumble world of a real press conference. If she’s so smart, what is the GOP afraid of?

I heard Sarah Palin speak two - three times prior to her speech at the RNC. Sarah Palin speech’s prior to the RNC was repetitive and lacked substance. The speech at the RNC was obviously written by a speech writer because she spoke on topics in which it was obvious she had no knowledge.

Umm yeah. That’s what this entire forum is about Marie. It’s acknowledged she has speech writers. The problem is….the scoffing being done at her having one, when all the politicians use speech writers. The difference here is….she’s being called to the mat for it, and they aren’t.

Also to note…..half way thru the speech, the teleprompter kept running , thru the applause. The second half of her speech….she was winging it. Let’s see Obama do that! 20 minutes of mmmm uuuhhh’s aaaaaa’s ooooooh’s errrr’s THUD!

Sarah Palin is an unknown, coming from the sticks. She is running for VP. It is important to know as much about her as possible. Judgment? Character? Honesty? Purpose? We aim to determine these things through verbal discourse.

We knew nothing about her, before “her” speech. It was a good speech. But it wasn’t her speech. Presenting another person’s words as your own is deceptive, and dishonest. It is plagiaristic. So we still know nothing about her purpose, judgment, or intellect, except that she can read, and that she is intellectually dishonest.

UHMMMM….hey liberals, you do know that speech writers write speeches….they DO NOT write policy. Not to mention politicians have a say in the creation of the speech, that’s why there are so many drafts.

So what if it was Bush’s FORMER speech writer. How many are qualified to to write speeches of that caliber???

All politicians use speech writers and many recycle.

No one criticized or demeaned Community Organizers; we demeaned and criticized your fearless leader because he had the audacity to compare that “experience” to his opponents VICE-Presidential nominee with her “far-superior” experience. I’m so tired of hearing all the dem’s whines. Just put on your big-kid pants/panties and allow yourself enough honesty to adore this little gal dynamo like the rest of America!

On that note: Don’t you feel a bit inferior comparing yourself as a PRESIDENTIAL candidate to that of the VP? No, she’s not a heartbeat away. Obama is a heartbeat away from the presidency; the VP is most probably at least four years away. If on the off-chance Sarah Palin had to take over, I would feel much more secure that the Palin common sense and decisiveness would carry us just fine!

Obamanites say that the McCain ticket hasn’t said anything about joblessness or healthcare. They need to take out the cotton from their ears. I heard it loud and clear. Neither party, to my chagrin, has stated HOW that will play out. However, it may be to keep the other party from “borrowing” ideas, as has happened in the past.

I would like to see neither party slamming the other, the Govenor, not withstanding. I will say, in the beginning, Sen. Obama did that well. But he (and his pit bulls) sling it now just as badly, and much more unfairly and untruly. He should have “kept his head when all about him were losing theirs”. For the first time in my life, I was proud of him, (when he kept things clean).

Isn’t it wild that the Obama camp accuses Govenor Palin (and Senator McCain) of everything they are themselves, guilty of, and no one rebutts them for it! It is so hypocritical! Obamans are just jealous that she reads someone else’s speech (that she has input into and strike privaleges) better than he reads his own. She’s got it and he wants it, so the sour grapes are abundant!

I love this girl! I am so enthralled that the first woman Vice-President (and you can bet) the first President of the USA will be a republican. Bet the dems didn’t see that one coming! And trust me, she doesn’t need Oprah. O was crying because she was hopeful of the first black man, becoming president. I understand that, but to shun the candidates, as a talk-show hostess, the reason is “O” so obvious! She is afraid of America’s Sweetheart, and “Oprah, you are one smart lady, because you are right to be afraid….Be VERY AFRAID”!

So what if Palin used Bush’s speechwriter. I fshe used the same bank as Obama would that make her believe everything he does and share his economic policy..I doubt it. People get a grip she tells the speechwriter what points she wants to make and they help craft the speech. The weak attempt by the left to associate McCain with Bush is pitiful. If Obama would actually bother to vote then as a course of doing his job he would have voted with Bush about 100% of the time because for the past two years while the democrats have controlled congress Bush has issued only two vetoes.
