Second Thoughts On Sarah

By Lanny Davis
Former White House Special Counsel/FOX News Political Contributor

My first reaction on Friday and Saturday –along with my most of my Democratic friends — was that Sen. McCain’s selection of an inexperienced novice governor with ultra-conservative views on social issues — from a small state that has a fraction of the population of Brooklyn — to be one heart beat from the presidency was a strategic blunder of the highest magnitude from which he would not recover.

The fact that Governor Palin made an overt reference to Hillary Clinton in her introductory press conference, apparently in the hope she could attract some of the disgruntled Clinton supporters, made little sense. She and Senator McCain must know that her ultra-conservative views that appeal mostly to the Religious Right wing of the GOP would not go over well with most, if not virtually all, of Hillary’s voters. In short, her issue positions would trump the fact that she was female–to assume otherwise is nothing short of patronizing to Hillary’s women supporters.

For example, Governor Palin is on record opposing all abortions, even when the pregnancy is a result of rape or incest. Surely women Clinton voters will be more turned off by that extremist position than be attracted to vote for the Republican ticket because Governor Palin is a woman.

Governor Palin is also on record preserving the option of “discussion” of “creationism” in public school classrooms, i.e., that the universe is about 5, 000 years old and the first to humans on earth were Adam and Eve, scientific evidence to the contrary notwithstanding.

And yet…and yet…Karl Rove had a candidate in 2000 and 2004 who held Sarah Palin’s views on most of these social issues. And the Democrats had two candidates whose views were similar to Senator Obama’s.

And I was convinced that George W. Bush would lose…twice.

So much for my political acumen.

The fact is, Senator McCain, Rove and other conservatives are gambling that, despite the problems in the economy and the overall unhappiness of the 80 % American people with the direction of the country, the country remains more conservative than liberal. And they appear to believe that, despite these far more adverse facts on the ground in 2008, it is more important to re-run the 2000 and 2004 strategies of revving up the Republican social conservative and evangelical base than reaching out to more centrist independent and moderate Republican voters.

Therefore, what this 2008 election may come down to is — for the third time in twelve years — which party does a better job in turning out their base and new voters.

Certainly Senator Obama’s campaign’s demonstrated record of increasing record turnouts and new voters in their “change” base is an undisputed fact. And their grassroots organizations and fund-raising prowess are perhaps the most impressive in this country’s history in either party. If turnout is the ultimate decider, even the brilliant Karl Rove must be daunted by what he sees in the Barack Obama organization and realize that this is a brand new ballgame and not even close to what the GOP ticket faced in 2000 and 2004.

Yet… one must admire the chutzpah of John McCain choosing Senator Obama’s “change” and “maverick” theme when he selected Governor Palin over Senator Clinton’s “experience” and “ready to be president” theme. And irony. Even if there is a serious argument that Governor Palin’s two years as governor are comparable to Senator Obama’s eight years in the state senate and two years in the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has 30-year veteran Joe Biden to work with closely as president and if, God forbid, Biden should succeed to the presidency. How does Joe Biden compare to Sarah Palin on readiness to be president?

Come on. Let’s get serious.

One good thing is plain about the two tickets: We actually may see an honest debate between liberal and conservative positions on issues and which of the two candidates can better appeal to the broad center — between these two philosophical bases of the two major parties — where general elections are won.

I see Senator Obama’s true centrist positions on social issues –faith, pro-2d Amendment, and especially, pro-individual responsibility and family values, including in the black community –as much different from the portrayal (rightly or wrongly) the Republicans got away with of the ideological-dominated Al Gore and John Kerry.

The greatest risk of all to Senator McCain in his choice of Governor Palin is what can be called the potential of a “James Stockdale” moment.

That is a reference to the late Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale, who ran as Ross Perot’s vice presidential candidate in 1992. Admiral Stockdale, a congressional medal of honor winner and a seven year POW in North Vietnam, began his turn at the October 1992 vice presidential debate with Democrat Al Gore and Republican Dan Quayle with the memorable opening line:

“Who am I? Why am I here?”

Admiral Stockdale — and his presidential ticketmate, Ross Perot — never had a chance to recover from that “deer in headlights” moment. Rightly or wrongly, most Americans couldn’t imagine the good Admiral and war hero being one heartbeat from the presidency.

Certainly Senator McCain’s high command, as enthusiastic as they now seem about Sarah Palin, must have some concern about the inexperienced Ms. Palin on the national stage conveying such an unplanned, spontaneous Stockdale-moment — either on the campaign trail with a live mike or in her one debate with Senator Joseph Biden.

She may be a true maverick and reformer and a burst of new energy for the heretofore unenthusiastic evangelical Christian right base of the GOP. She has certainly made a favorable impression on me as smart, politically savvy, tough-minded, and charming.

But her margin of error may be as thin as Admiral Stockdale’s. And when she is asked why she would require a young woman impregnated by her father not to terminate her pregnancy even in the early weeks and, instead, be forced to have that baby, it will be interesting to see whether she has an answer that won’t do to Senator McCain what Admiral Stockdale did to Ross Perot.

But one thing is clear — John McCain must have taken this risk into account and decided that it was time to roll the dice and take the chance — or else the Obama-Biden ticket, up 8% in the Gallup Daily Tracking Poll on the day of the announcement of Governor Palin as Senator McCain’s choice, would win anyway.

See Snopes reference the campaign contribution attributed to Maureen Dowd… marked as UNtrue

John McCain earned my vote in1967 when he refused early release as preferential treatment while a prisoner of the North Vietnamese. I vote for strong personal commitment to the issues that really matter. Jane Fonda would never get my vote… nor, will anyone she supports.

That is why I say “shame on you” to the villans on both sides of this election who try to win via crooked tricks and lies.

Palin used Hilliary’s remark about 18 million cracks in the ceiling, lets bring it home. It is so obvious that she is after the Hilliary females. That’s her whole agenda to get Hilliary’s votes. It finally comes out. The republicans think that the american voters are so stupid they will vote for any female that runs. Dick Morris made a stance on how republicans think about women. They need to stay in their place. Make no mistake, Palin is no Hilliary……Hillary will certainly have a position on Obama cabinet and will compaign for Obama. We democrats are dedicated.

This is an awful essay and wrong all the way around in strategic terms. But I do like this: “I see Senator Obama’s true centrist positions on social issues – faith, pro-2d Amendment, and especially, pro-individual responsibility and family values, including in the black community – as much different from the portrayal (rightly or wrongly) the Republicans got away with of the ideological-dominated Al Gore and John Kerry.” Indeed. Obama is not a progressive and the realization of this fact is deflating enthusiasm on the left, as it rightly should. I voted for Gore and Kerry because there was at least something there for me. In Obama’s case, the least worst isn’t good enough. It’s time to go in a different direction.

I am listening to Chris W and he keeps pushing for interviews with Palin - clue - this woman is a
mother - every mother knows when the kids are not behaving, you give them a “time out” till they modify their behavior! The media has been throwing a tantrem - she will need to see them calm down prior to a reasonable discussion. You guys will get your turn and a little time in the corner, cooling your heels may result in a benefit in the fact you will be ready to talk about policy instead of screaming and kicking on the floor of debate.

Well the majority of Democrats dumped the two has beens hillary and bill clinton, and the elected Democrats were unable to do one simple bit of legislation, like come out with a energy bill, Showing their usual lack of ability along with their usual lack of integrity, and doing the only step they do very well, because they seem to join together and practice this step. That is as all Americans know tax and spend, tax and spend. as they dance around the world on the poor Americans money. Governor PALIN is here and she is here to stay.John MCCAIN is here to stay. Hopefully they will be able to stop this dirt road to disaster geo. bush and the Democrats are driving America downl.

Every time I hear the perported “inexperience” of Gov Sarah Palin linked with the concept of being one heartbeat away from the presidency I have to cry fowl. Wake up America! The liberal media and Democratic campaign will do anything to keep the American public from realizing that their candidate in “the #1 spot” on their ticket has absolutely NO verifiable leadership experience whatsoever. I’ll take Gov Palin’s “inexperience” over Sen Obama’s “NO EXPERIENCE” any day. At least she’s been in positions requiring real decision making for which she’s been held accountable. I hope Americans will stop feeding on the dog food that’s being dished out by the Democratic campaign and liberal news media before the whole nation winds up with a pile of fleas!

I am shocked that the following was written and then printed by the NY Times. However, you liberals that have been very active on this forum need to read this and understand completely what Obama and his organization is really about. Maybe you are comfortable with these contributions from Muslim and Chinese donors but I most certainly am not. By the way he was assisted by a Muslim professor from Texas in getting into Harvard. What is that all about?

This being printed in the NY Time and written by Maureen Dowd is in itself amazing since she is a died in the wool liberal. Scary!

WHERE DID OBAMAS MONEY COME FROM???????
By MAUREEN DOWD

OBAMAS TROUBLING INTERNET FUND RAISING

Certainly the most interesting and potentially devastating phone call I have received during this election cycle came this week from one of the Obamas campaign internet geeks. These are the staffers who devised Obamas internet fund raising campaign which raised in the neighborhood of $200 million so far. That is more then twice the total funds raised by any candidate in history and this was all from the internet campaign. What I learned from this insider was shocking but I guess we shouldnt be surprised that when it comes to fund raising there simply are no rules that cant be broken and no ethics that prevail. Obamas internet campaign started out innocently enough with basic e-mail networking , lists saved from previous party campaigns and from supporters who visited any of the Obama campaign web sites. Small contributions came in from these sources and the internet campaign staff were more than pleased by the results. Then, about two months into the campaign the daily contribution intake multiplied. Where was it coming from? One of the web site security monitors began to notice the bulk of the contributions were clearly coming in from overseas internet service providers and at the rate and frequency of transmission it was clear these donations were programmed by a very sophisticated user. While the security people were not able to track most of the sources due to firewalls and other blocking devices put on these contributions they were able to collate the number of contributions that were coming in seemingly from individuals but the funds were from only a few credit card accounts and bank electronic funds transfers. The internet service providers (ISP) they were able to trace were from Saudi Arabia , Iran , and other Middle Eastern countries. One of the banks used for fund transfers was also located in Saudi Arabia . Another concentrated group of donations was traced to a Chinese ISP with a similar pattern of limited credit card charges. It became clear that these donations were very likely coming from sources other than American voters. This was discussed at length within the campaign and the decision was made that none of these donations violated campaign financing laws. It was also decided that it was not the responsibility of the campaign to audit these millions of contributions as to the actual source (specific credit card number or bank transfer account numbers) to insure that none of these internet contributors exceeded the legal maximum donation on a cumulative basis of many small donations. They also found the record keeping was not complete enough to do it anyway. This is a shocking revelation. We have been concerned about the legality of bundling contributions after the recent exposure of illegal bundlers but now it appears we may have an even greater problem. I guess we should have been somewhat suspicious when the numbers started to come out. We were told (no proof offered) that the Obama internet contributions were from $10.00 to $25.00 or so. If the $200,000,000 is right, and the average contribution was $15.00, that would mean over 13 million individuals made contributions? That would also be 13 million contributions would need to be processed. How did all that happen? I believe the Obama campaigns internet fund raising needs a serious, in depth investigation and audit. It also appears the whole question of internet fund raising needs investigation by the legislature and perhaps new laws to insure it complies not only with the letter of these laws but the spirit as well.

IS IT RIGHT FOR FOREIGN COUNTRIES TO HAVE AN INVESTMENT IN WHO BECOMES OUR NEXT PRESIDENT???

Comment by Jeanette Walker

I agree with the Hockey Grandma. I have been depressed for several weeks worrying that Obama would become our next president. He would ruin America as we have known it. He would tax us into poverty and send it all over the world to support the dictators who get the money ignoring their needy citizens. John McCain and Sarah Palin have pulled me out of my depressed state. My heart is lighter thanks to them. I now have hope again.

Comment by James D.

People, please, let’s give Lanny Davis his views! He whines that Sarah Palin is an inexperienced, novice governor. She has ‘ultra-conservative’ views and is from a small state with a fraction of the population of Brooklyn.
I’m sure that Lanny also meant to include in his little diatribe that Barack Obama was a ‘community organizer’ and that he voted ‘present’ approx. 130 times while in the Illinois legislature because making a decision was just too tough. I’m sure that Lanny wanted to mention, also, that Barack Obama never authored a major piece of legislation and has been in the senate less than a full term. Now, granted, Barack Obama did find the time to author two autobiographies (where does he find the time?!!!!!) I read Audacity Of Hope-lotsa fluff and no substance!
I’m sure that Lanny wanted to mention that Barack Obama is the most liberal senator in congress (when he IS there). Also, I’m sure Lanny meant to include that Sarah Palin received more votes when she ran for mayor of Wasilla than Joe Biden did running for president. I’m sure that Lanny also meant to add that his sweetheart, Hillary, didn’t quite have the right stuff and that he is scrambling to pick up the pieces and put a positive spin on things.
So, please people, let’s give poor Lanny a break. He can’t help it. He just keeps flailing and trying to prop up a failed point of view that most Americans do not want.

I have lived in Alaska for the past 33 years and its NOT A SMALL TOWN and our Governor has more experience as an Executive than the whole democratic ticket put together. Watch out Biased Media and watch out Big Liberal Fat Cats. There will be a new sheriff in Washington Town and her name is Sara Palin. She is going to kick butt and take names.

Mr. Davis;
Your ignorance is most apparent when you make comments that are untrue; it is well-known that ignorant people will believe anything they choose to without checking out the facts; I guess that’s what you’re counting on with this blog.

I am not concern with Palin’s personal issues. I want to know what her views and policies will be. When is she going to start taking questions from media and voters? When is she going to give her first interview. We only know some of her personal life and what she was scripted to say at the convention!! Who is Sarah Palin? What is the GOP scared of? They are keeping her hid. I don’t want to hear she is warming up because they did not give other candidates a chance to warm up!!

Comment by Steve

As usual I only got through the first two paragraphs before reading mistruths. Actually she does allow consideration for abortion in the cases of rape or incest.
Typical liberal.

I suppose the libs are more afraid of what Sarah can do than what she can’t do.

Sarah Palin is a breath of fresh air in the political stinch.

So, you’re a ‘big man, Mister Lanny Davis? Picking on a baby that hasn’t even been born yet - ‘…be forced to have that baby’. I guess you were lucky that your mother wasn’t a liberal who believed it was ok to get rid of an ‘inconvenience’! Pretty selfish of you, Lanny. Thank God for people like Governor Palin. By the way, did I see that McCain and Obama are even in a poll? Exciting! It’s only going to get better.

Comment by Sabrina

Lanny Davis, a typical Liberal, doesn’t give all the facts. While he knocks the population of Alaska, he fails to mention that Biden’s state of Delaware is only in 45th place in regards to population - Alaska is 47. As Governor of Alaska, Palin has to deal with Japan in regards to fishing rights and Canada - this gives her more foreign affairs experience than the Dali Bama and Biden combined!

Comment by Denise

I question McCain’s decision making process-with all the excellent candidates in this country WHY would he pick this person? If he can’t make an excellent decision picking his VP how can he make the difficult decisions about running this country? And why would she accept the nomination especially knowing the challenges her family was tackling. You are first a mother–protecting your children is your first priority. It just doesn’t make sense.

Comment by Rosa St.Claire

Let’s see, Obama wrote 2 books and cruised his way around Washington, thought he had been a senator too long and wanted a promotion. So what if others have to earn it? Not Obama. He read a couple of fairy tales like The Emperor’s New Clothes and the Pied Piper and decided to be the Pied Piper that lured so many who didn’t know better. He improvised on The Emperor’s New Clothes by The Emperor’s New Speech(full of hot air). He wanted to play a bit safe despite all his arrogance and chose a Washington insider who’s gone along with everything in Washington, D.C. forver and ever like the 3 monkeys, see no evil, hear no evil, talk no evil. He never stood to do anything meaningful in Washington for this country he claims he loves so much. Although he would have been better as President than Obama. He does know the way around and around and around, but he would have never gone for any changes, major or otherwise.
In the other side we have a man who is incredibly tough, yet kind enough to adopt a child who needed a home. A patriot who has shown his love for his country time and again. A man who has worked with the other side to do what’s best for America, and a woman, who has single handedly fought against corruption in Alaska, and faced off with the Big Boys, while still being a mother, and a wife. There is honesty, integrity, and love of country. I think that the choice is so obvious. McCain and Palin for the White House!

Comment by Jon Wanberg

Wow, Lanny, you democrats must be scared to death! I guess you thought you had this one in the bag. Senator Obama a centrist? Are you kidding? He is, as is well documented by his positions, the MOST liberal senator in the Senate! Interesting…the rose colored glasses you see through. Republicans criticize their own when they deserve it; Liberals seem to enjoy pumping out propaganda and lies to cover their mishaps.

Comment by Bea Adams

For all you die-hard believers that the Republicans will overturn Roe vs. Wade when they win this election(and they will because when the cameras panned around Sarah Palin’s rapt audience during her speech, they showed us pictures of the dumbest white people in America and they vote), dream on. The GOP had their chance: a GOP leaning Supreme Court who gave us George Bush, a Republican President and Vice President, and a GOP dominated Congress. The Republicans don’t intend to overturn Roe vs. Wade because then they couldn’t dredge that “club” out every election cycle to scare the country into electing their candidates. What they don’t tell you is that they don’t intend to overturn Roe vs. Wade because then they would have to pay welfare for all those unaborted/unwanted babies. The GOP is a party of losers and Sarah Palin is their cheerleader. Why should the party that wrecked America deserve another term running things in the nation’s capital?

NOT WRITTEN ANY MAJOR LEGISLATION,HE HAS SPENT TOO MUCH TIME RUNNING FOR OFFICE.
GOV. PALIN HAS BEEN IN PUBLIC OFFICE 11 YEARS ACCORDING TO CHRIS,
GOV. 2, MAYOR 4,OIL AND GAS COMMISON 1 AND FINALLY COUNCILWOMAN
4 YEARS,NOW LOOK AT OBAMA’S RECORD,THE TIME HE HAS BEEN THERE, TIME HE WAS ABSENT, TIME HE VOTED PRESENT, DOES HE HAVE TWO TWO FULL YEARS SERVICE LEFT? I DOUBT IT.
GOV. PALIN HAS 11 YEARS PULIC SERVICE, OBAMA MAYBE TWO. IF IT WAS OBAMA VS’S PALIN, SHE HAS MORE EXPERIENCE, SHE WOLD HAVE MY VOTE

I wasn’t so sure about Gov Palin prior to her speech at the RNC. When I heard her speak, I became inspired and proud to see such an intelligent, straight talking, honest woman speaking in front of such a large audience.

She was awesome! A real life Wonder Woman!! I was going to support McCain anyway, but after hearing Sarah, I am now an invigorated and excited supporter of John McCain. I believe both of them but do not believe Obama or Biden.

I can’t believe Obama put Biden on his ticket. His ticket pales in comparison to McCain/Palin. Her speech emasculated both of them. They look like woosies to me now!

NO-BAMA.

Lanny,

I like you personally, but your article only articulates you and
your parties ignorance of the intellect and lives of the average
middle class American.

On the subject of experience , you insinuated Obama has more;
actually Palin has 3 years more experience than Obama in elected
office. Then on top of that, Palin has many more measureable
accomplishments. Furthermore, Obama is the top of your ticket,
and the one that has 30 years of experience is at the bottom.Mccain
who clearly has more experience than BIden or Obama is at the
top of our ticket. Your shell game is using clear shells and it comes
across as condescending to working class stiffs such as myself.

This is classic liberalism. If you can’t destroy the message, destroy the messenger. Watch the liberals now, the attacks are going to be in full swing. They will go after Palin like Bill Clinton after an intern in a blue dress.

If in fact 80% of Americans are unhappy, how come I never run into any of them here and Houston is a fairly good sized town.

Is it perhaps that the lefties need a recession and unhappy people to get their messiah elected? As the Barackster once said…”America is the greatest country on the earth and you must work with me to change it!”

Gov. Palin is a refreshing change in the political landscape and I suspect that old Joe Biden may well “call in sick” for the VP Debate. The McCain-Palin ticket is really the only ticket that can accomplish real change which is evidenced by history.

Comment by Gene

To Lanny and the rest of the leftist liberals, socialists and communist garbage that resides in our great country.

Your time is up.

New, invigorated and reformed Republican party is on its way to Washington to shake the place from inside out and upside down. Just like we did in the 1980s with Great Reagan and like we did in the 1990s with Great Newt.

Sarah Palin represents fresh blood and great bridge to take Republican ideas build on patriotism, smaller government, self reliance and independence into the 21 century and bring aboard new generation of Americans.

We are compassionate and ready to help to those in need but we are not stupid. We can see through the veil of the so called “change” professed by Obama. We can see that his change is to entrench tax and spend liberals in the heart of the American government, to tax working people and re-distribute our hard earned money in the fashion of Lenin and failed ideas of communism. His wet dream is to make America into a socialistic version of Germany or France or worth Russia. To make us dance to their music. To make us kiss their socialistic asses.

Well, it will NEVER happen. Not in your life time and not in a life time of our children and grandchildren.

American spirit will always live on, will always prevail, always be a shining beacon for those who treasure freedom and will always lead the world to a better future.

We can overcome any difficulties. We did it before. We’ll do it now. And we’ll do it whenever or whenever new challenges will rise again.

Your lights are out.

Good night.

I believe Governor Sarah Palin to has real convictions and the courage to defend them. Whether you agree or not with her you know what she stands for. Obama talks one way when he is in Scranton and another way when he is in San Francisco. The only real change about Obama is that he changes his position according to who is talking to.

By the way I would not discount President Bush just yet. Winston Churchill became unpopular and was voted out of office. President Bush did not do what was “politically correct” but what was right for our Country.

I think Sarah Palin is a phony. John McCain was basing his judgment by choosing her on looks and personality. This election should hopefully based on the integrity of the candidates. Sarah Palin states that she has cleaned up the corruptness in Alaska. That is untrue when it comes to the Anchorage National Guard known to some at the “good old boys” (Generals who promote themselves and are allowed to.) People in this Guard are afraid to speak up for fear of retaliation and blatant mistreatment. THe corruptness in this Guard has been ignored by Sarah Palin and her Lt. Gov. isn’t any better. There is mounting evidence which I know from the person who has it, that exposure is coming soon and something better be done. It’s time for an IG inspection and clean up the “three stooges.”

We the people of the United States, are absolutely gagging on politics in Washington where our representatives are there to better themselves and to hell with their jobs. To hell with what is good for the people and our safety and future. We want a President and Vice-President that crosses all party lines to make decisions that put us first.
I had no idea who I would vote for until this past week. I feel that Palin-McCain will care more about we the people than anyone else that is out there. I don’t put thought into what party is what and where that party wants to take us. I have begged for years for someone who simply wanted to do the right thing for America.

I still am amused that democrats like Lanny Davis spout that Sarah Palin is less qualified to be president than Barrack Obama. A senator that has yet to do anything of significance in the U.S. Senate or state senate. Did he author any important legislation, NO, head any important committee, NO, have any significant executive experience, NO. Does he use speechwriters and a teleprompter? Yes. Have past presidents had similar qualifications to Sarah Palin, yes. Lets throw the name Jimmy Carter, a democrat, out there. He was a one term governor. There are others as well. Sarah Palin has more credentials for fighting the good fight than Barrack Obama. She has reformed Alaska politics, brought important infrastructure and jobs to the state of Alaska, left her state with a surplus. Give me someone who can walk the walk and talk the talk, Sarah Palin. As far as I can tell, the only thing we know about Barrack Obama is that he talks the talk but has nothing but 2 memoirs to back it up.

Check the gallup poll today, Mr davis, and Experience has nothing to do with being in office if everything the candidate believes if WRONG>…so much for MR. BIDEN. People are tired of fakes….which is the reason Mc Cain and Palen resonate with the heart of America…..

As a conservative and person of faith let me share this concern about Obama. Now that we have seen all we need to know about the both candidates it is embaressing to compare the two. McCain would have died for his country defending it. His record and reputation in congress is there for all to see. Obama is an empty suit. He has no history. He is a mystery man. What we do know is that his association with the people he has had in his life would exclude him from a job in a major corporation.
Here’s what scares me though. If Obama can cause this much excitement and turn so many heads in his direction with what we do know of him which is nothing. If he can fool the American public with such enormity what will happen some day when the real “antichrist” comes on the scene? Will we fall for him so hard so quick and so complete? Americans are looking for a quick fix and are grasping for straws with Obama.

The left is desperate when they complain that Palin used a speech writer. Good lord! Every stinking politician in Washington uses a s speech writer. If Obama didn’t have a speech writer and a teleprompter he’d be mute.

So many Europeans are morons. So intelligent?, but what have they gotten right in the last century? America has saved them over and over. They ridiculed Reagan. He won the cold war for them with the the only intelligent European leader (Thatcher) in support. Most of Europe acts in blatant envy of American exceptionalism. Just remember that when you hear them whine about how we are stupid in America. Their leaders want to have the power they lost 200 years ago. They will never get it back. As a matter of fact they knuckled under to Putin in Georgia in about 10 seconds because they, like us (thanks to Lanny and his friends’ “brilliance”), don’t have any of their own oil. Europeans have replaced real religion with the religion of green, and I don’t mean money, I mean environmentalism - with the emphasis on “mentalism”. They’ve sacrified their economies to being green and thoughtful at the expense of all else. If European leaders were brilliant they would have their own oil and wouldn’t have taxed their economies into stagnation and allowed the abortion of their populations into decline so that they don’t have enough people to pay the mile-high taxes to support their socialism. How intelligent is that? Set up a socialist world where it takes five current workers to support one retiree and then promote abortion and tear down family values so that nobody is having families to produce kids to support your socialist system? That isn’t just dumb - it’s lunacy. (Surprisingly, give France mild credit for going nuclear. At least that was smart.)

Face it. The Dems are horrified and beside themsleves that the first female in the White House will be a Republican. They had their shot to put Hillary in line. They choked and chose the guy who reads a teleprompter well. And Lanny know this. As Hillary’s close friend he’s freaking out that his buddy won’t have that, “Look what I did. I broke the glass ceiling.” moment. Instead it will be a brilliant, hard-nosed woman from Alaska. Remember left-wing pretenders to intelligence. There are many kinds of intelligence. Book learning. Self awareness. Emotional intelligence. And then there’s people who can see the truth and make a good decision. That’s Palin. And I’m quite happy to have the next two months unfold because I’m quite confident she’s going to appeal to millions of women who are in the middle and will be happy to vote for a woman for VP and Pres. they know will protect their families and cut back spending and waste in goverment. Lanny seems to think all women who aren’t red-state voters value their abortions above all else. And why bring up the 1/1000th of 1% of abortions that deal with rape or incest? That’s the worst kind of trick. Those are irrelevant in reality.

Well, with a democrat in all the offices I say all we have to do is watch how well she can handle all the scandal then by the end of 4 years we will know. Just be patient is the word and watch her in action. She may not be able to throw her weight around when she gets with the big boy’s. It will take more then knowing how to hunt, fish, and ride snowmobiles, I do not know when she had time to be a mom or have kids, I just had time for my family and work to pay the bills”””””

Why is it that liberals are so quick to attack Christians? Isn’t this a bit of a double standard? Seems to me it is. By being liberal… aren’t you subscribing to the ideology that alternative views are acceptable? (Apparently, this seems to be true for all but one view… Christianity.)

Lanny Davis wants to talk “issues” after he just tried to tie John McCain to Pres Bush and how many times did he mention Karl Rove? When Dem’s have nothing better to say, they yell “Bush! Rove!” like yelling fire in a theatre! Get over yourselves. McCain is the ONLY republican that you CAN’T tie to Bush! Lanny needs to stop reading Axelrod’s campaign talking points and wake up. He compares her 2 years as Governor to Obama’s 8 years in the State Senate and 2 as Senator. What he fails to mention (like most Dems when it’s not to their advantage to include the FACTS), is most of Obama’s time in the US Senate, he’s spent campaigning and NOT actually doing anything in the Senate. He also fails to mention Palin’s 2 years running a state-wide commission agency and her prior experience as mayor. I don’t care how small her town is, running a town is a lot more usable experience than a state senator who offerred NOT ONE piece of legislation in that time…I guess he was too busy heading committees with domestic terrorist William Ayers…

I never cease to be amazed at how frequently the term “ultra-conservative” is used in an attempt to marginalize those with traditional belief systems. Once you step outside of the media and Washington’s inner circles, statistically, you’ll find that an overwhelming majority of Americans hold views that would fall at least partially, if not wholly, into the realm of “ultra-conservative” or at the very least “conservative.” Yet, those with such views are continually made to feel as if THEY are wrong, old-fahsioned or just plain stupid. When will those with other views stop fighting so vehemently to try and prove their points and recognize that they, indeed, are the true minority? I have learned long ago that the louder a person yells, “I’m in charge! the less they are. And the more you belittle ANYone or group, the more you reveal your deepest fears and insecurities. If the “ultra-conservative” are all that “stupid,” just leave them alone and they’ll die out, just as a log rolled out of the fire will not stay lit for long. Continuing to keep them IN the fire ensures that they will burn brighter and brighter. And what if, just maybe, they’re right?

Dear HUMAN ON EARTH - You make me laugh - if you think anyone believes that you are a woman that changed her mind after listening to Palin - you are truly in need of some medication. Palin has brought Women into a different light! She is a strong working mother - like most women - and she is an inspiration for our daugthers! Nice try “dude” but you are not a Republican and probably not a Woman!

Views from an independent voter… and independent thinker…

I have long been an independent voter, evaluating my political choices free from any preconceived political party notions. The truth is that I have long believed that both major political parties are hypocritical and that their policies include very obvious contradictions in idealogy to anyone who simply takes their herd-mentality-hat off for a moment and gives an objective look. To be completely forthright however, I should point out that I am a Christian, an ordained minister, the owner of several small businesses, and a hater of large government and taxation, so I do tend to vote Republican more often than not for what I should think would be obvious reasons. But I have been registered as a Democrat before in a state that required me to declare one or the other (another inequity that exists in our corrupt political system in my opinion), and have voted for many Democrats.

I have a simple question for Lanny and the others in the media and political circles who are questioning Palin’s level of experience… How does Governer Palin stack up against your posterchild for presidential greatness when it comes to preparedness? For the past 10 years I’ve heard over and over again from the left how Bill Clinton was one of the greatest presidents in recent history. It occurs to me that his experience was strikingly similar to Palin’s. And yet he was perfectly prepared in your opinion. What’s the difference?

It is my hope that the McCain camp does not fall for the ploy that seems obvious to me… misdirection. By getting people focused on Palin’s experience and qualifications the emphasis has been taken off Obama’s experience and qualifications. Further, the left has succeeded — at least for the moment — in getting us all busy comparing Palin to Obama. Even the McCain camp is falling for it, evidenced by their latest ad that compares her directly to Obama. Haven’t we all missed something here? Palin is running for vice president. Obama is running for president. Although it is prudent to look at the vice presidency and the contigencies that would consider that person taking over the presidency, can’t we all agree that it is equally or more prudent to look at the presidency as more important? I’m tired of hearing about Palin’s lack of experience and her being placed a “heartbeat away from the presidency” when we are looking at a potential president who is actually running for that office with far less experience in governing than Palin has. See, I fell for the trick too… I’m comparing the vp to the president again!

But let’s at least all come clean and agree that Barack Obama said himself that he believed “in being prepared for a job before running for it”, and, that he “was not prepared for the job of president”. He stated this in an interview a few years back where he also said that, given that he would have to begin running almost immediately (again, this was a few years ago), he would not have the requisite experience needed for the position in his opinion. Clearly, he changed his mind on this. But that should not influence us to change our minds. C’mon, let’s be honest with each other. The community organizing, while being a wonderful example to all of us, is not an experience that he can draw from in the role of president. And his time in the state legislature is equally admirable, as well as equally irrelevant when it comes to preparing one for the presidency and national/international politics. So basically, the sum of his experience and preparedness is the short time he has spent in the Senate. Subtract the last two years of that time in the Senate to account for his time spent in running for president and what you have left is about 1 year of actual, relevant experience. Wow! Are we really this close to electing a man who has a little over a year of experience in national politics to the highest position known to mankind?

Mr. Obama is clearly a nice man with an extremely bright future ahead of him. But so is my neighbor, and that doesn’t mean he’s qualified to be president.

Now that the convention is over and the crowds head home, (I can finally get some sleep), I am looking back at this past week and wondering how one woman could have changed the dynamic of an election so dramatically. I can only speak for myself, but I waited very anxiously to see who Senator McCain would choose. This is how I would know what direction he wanted to go in. Prior to this, I had no true, clear picture of what he intended, or what his thoughts or goals were.

The first clear picture of Senator McCain began to come with his straight-forward answers at Saddleback, for which I was very thankful. Debates may be well and good, but offer little real insight into a person’s character or direction. The Saddleback forum gave honest answers you could compare from both candidates side by side.

But nothing gave me confidence in both the man, or the party like his choice of Sarah Palin. Who was this woman the media had already eliminated? I had to frantically search for answers once his announcement came, especially among the lies and smears from the scared, liberal media circus. Snope.com was likely extremely busy for a few days.

The more I discovered, however, the more impressed I was. But nothing could have prepared me for the words of the woman herself. In all the years of political speeches, I had long since given up thinking we could ever again have a government we could believe in, or trust in.

Can anything ever be believed coming from our government? Can anything ever be accomplished? Will it be lame forever? Are they to be useless while America becomes a laughing stock, and no longer a super power, or someone other countries look up to, but look at with hatred?

For the first time in many years, I think maybe so. And I am compelled to say “Thank you, John McCain and Sarah Palin”. I pray that you get the chance to bring some hope back to America, because she is a great country, founded on great principles by great peoples.

God Bless America

It concerns me with all the Democrat riots that is happening. When a sports team plays and the crowd causes a riot the coach is reprimand for not being able to control the team’s fans. Why would America want a candidate for President if he is unable to control his party; this shows an inability to control the United States and direct America forward in a positive way?

Lanny sounds as though he is “whistling in the dark”. Scared? The democrats should be scared, very very scared. This is the first time since Reagan that the republican party is excited. Yes, there are more conservative leaning citizens than left - get use to it, live with it, and get ready to accommodate it.

in response to “Michael Lowe, Member State Central Committee, Republican Party of Va.” — typical GOP, you got your self righteous facts all wrong and now look like an ass. ANIMAL FARM was by Orwell, not Huxley, you moron. Maybe you should think twice before posting here… or getting involved in politics. Hopefully President Obama will help improve the education system in Virginia so idiots like you will become extinct.

Lanny,

you’re a moron. I don’t blame you for it. It’s impossible for one to see clearly when they’re blinded by religious idiology — and make no mistake about it… you are religiously liberal. you serve it and it alone. that is why it’s an outright lie that liberals are about women’s rights, black rights, gay rights, etc. you’re not. you are for only LIBERAL women’s rights; LIBERAL black rights; and LIBERAL gays rights. Think about Governor Palin, Clarence Thomas and the Log Cabins if you want to disagree. Liberal is always first with you because Liberalism is your God. You serve it blankly without reservation or logic and you always will unless you have a revelation.
