Dr. King Would be Proud
I was a 20-year old copyboy at NBC News in Washington when Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have A Dream” speech. I accompanied correspondent Jack Perkins to the event at the Lincoln Memorial. At the time, I didn’t fully understand the significance of the moment, but the power of King’s rhetoric and the substance of his message touched me deeply and awakened a spirit in me that allowed this white, middle class young man from Washington’s suburbs to begin to understand the pain of slavery and racial discrimination.
I am proud of a country that would elevate a man of color to attain the nomination of his party for the presidency. It does not diminish his achievement to note that Barack Obama has ideas and policies that are mostly opposite my own. Is there another country on earth that could address its sin of racism the way America has done? To say that Dr. King would be proud of this moment would be an understatement.
Obama knows he stands on the shoulders of those who went before, who were arrested, lynched, beaten, denied proper housing, denied the right to vote, denied their full humanity because of an external characteristic that had nothing to do with the content of their character.
It is often forgotten that Republicans had a major role in ending discrimination and southern Democrats a major role in trying to maintain segregation (at least Democrats would like voters to forget). It was Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves. Calvin Coolidge spoke about the morality of equal rights for blacks. Dwight Eisenhower sent troops into Little Rock to integrate Central High School. Illinois Senator Everett Dirksen was one of the Republican leaders who joined with Northern Democrats to make voting rights and open housing laws a reality. Two modern Secretaries of State, Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, owe their elevation to high office to progress on racial reconciliation.
While I do not intend to vote for Barack Obama, my decision is not based on his skin color, but rather on the “color” of his ideology. Still, I salute his achievement and am grateful to be a citizen of a country that offers the possibility of a person of color becoming President of the United States. Dr. King’s dream just might become Obama’s reality.

Black voters can’t say what change Obama is planning because they think everything he says “is code for he’s going to give us enough money and power to stick it to the whites”.He might give them a few more dollars and get them a few government “green” jobs and get them into a few universities as they expect. “He will not get them “Reparations”.You know why? That would mean blacks can not continue to to cry about how they are held back by racist whites NOT because they don’t work for what they want. Their own leaders keep them in bondage while their leaders send their children to private schools paid for black poor black folks money.
Very well said. Thank you.
Here’s McCain’s joke. Unbelievable.
“Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?
Because her father is Janet Reno.”
Family values? Christian? Our leader?
Let’s talk about racism…
In South Carolina, black-on-white racism is alive and well.
No, America has NOT solved the race problem…
You are really something. You are proud of a country that gives the “possibility” that a person of color can be president. Correct me if I am wrong, but our constitution is color blind and it gives all citizens the possibility to become president. You, sir make it sound like only white people(males) can actually ascend to this office. BTW, we all know that Lincoln freed the slaves as a way to save the Union and not because he was concerned about the constitutional rights of black people. Anyway , Lincoln’s Republcan party no longer exists. Eisenhower only sent troops to Little Rock because he did not want America embarassed before the rest of the world about its treatment of blacks.
Thanks Cal. For me, a lifelong Republican, Obama has lit a fire. I think he reminds me a lot of Reagan, because he appeals to the American Patriot side of me that says together we are better than apart. I am tired of fighting over every single thing, both sides. Rev. Dobson praying for rain on Denver, Michael Moore laughing about Gustav. ENOUGH!. I’ve had it. No matter who Sarah Palin and Joe Biden are, the other side are ready to rip them. We need to unite this country soon, and unfortunately, my party is moving farther away from that.
Thank you, very nicely said.
nw
The Democrats have only injected race into politics even more with their selection of Obama. Any criticism of him is racist. Voting for anyone other than Obama will be seen as racist. Racism seems to be getting worse in America, not better and the Democrats and especially Obama will not be able to do anything about it. Dr. King would not be proud. Besides, wasn’t Dr. King a Republican?
Wow, what a convention, 80,000 people, of course the media fails to mention that 75% of them only came to see the free Sprigstein and Bon-Jovi concert. But I must admit, Obama is very good at knowing what to do to BECOME President…to bad he doesn’t have a clue on knowing what to do AS President.
What an empty suit.
what a loser.
But, what a ‘rock-star’.
I’m saddened by what I have read on the pages of these replies. I am a well-educated, retired Air Force Officer, and a totally-disabled Iraq veteran. I am on a fixed income from the VA and Social Security that I had to fight to get.
I know that Dr. King would be proud of the accomplishments of this election thus far. Many of the replies attempted to write a quote from his speeches to show how Dr. King would feel, but he was a non-violent and peaceful individual. Most of these replies cast stones at others.
I go through the channels listening for the most non-bias commentaries about the candidates. Unfortunately, I can’t believe FOXNEWS. Why does the station always feel it has to put down the Democrats and Blacks. If Senator Obama and Senator Biden win the election what will the station do to show respect? The reporters always feel they know everything and never allow the Democratic speakers an opportunity to talk. If the Democrats had chosen the Alaskan governor, the FOXNEWS reporters would have been all over Senator Obama for chosing someone with no experience; especially no foreign experience. I just get tired of watching as your reporters monitor everything he does and says. Dividing the country has to stop.
I appreciate the incredible contributions to American Society made by our black citizens. In fact, it is with a feeling of pride that I consider them a wonderful race. But, that is where my consideration of “race” ends.
I grew up in the 70s - 90s. I assumed equal rights for all was a given. However, I was never naive to think that all of our citizens were completely color-blind.
What surprises me now, though, is just how much hate certain populations of blacks harbor toward white citizens. The canard that blacks are not racist because they don’t have “the power” is a rather silly notion.
OF COURSE blacks can be every bit as bigoted as anyone else. They’re HUMAN; just like everyone else. The time for unity will arise when people stop dividing themselves into hyphenated Americans. And, when all Americans actually know the true unrevised history of this country and its contributions to the world; not just its failings.
It is unfortunate for those blacks who desperately want a black as president that Barack Obama became the Democrat nominee. There are so many far more qualified individuals in office than he. And, so many more whose love of country and its culture would not even be in question.
The fact is, Barack is a mystery on many levels. It is a mystery why he has attained a religiously offensive anointment as a ‘messiah; it is a mystery how he rose to political prominence as quickly and as effortlessly as he did; and it is a mystery why rational adults who would otherwise decry Republican inclusion of their faith into campaigning see absolutely no threat of ‘theocratic rule’ when Obama talks about black Jesus.
I look forward to the day qualified blacks, women, hispanics, and asians become president. But, only if they adhere to and protect The Constitution, and, only if they are QUALIFIED.
Now is the time for the truth. Is it true that Barack Obama is 6.25% black, 43.75% Arabic, and 50% white? If so (according to Arcade@Home(tm), then this should change the dialectic. Also, from the same source, is it true that former Presidents Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Warren Harding, and Calvin Coolidge were part black? Please, let us all be honest with this! If race is to be used either for or against a candidate then let us know what is the truth, please.
In no way, though, could I ever imagine that Dr. King would endorse Obama. Although they are both Democrats who speak the same themes, they are worlds apart in the reality of their actions. Dr. King spoke about life and equality, and he lived this. Obama won’t even allow unborn children who survive abortions to be given medical attention in his home state of Illinois, and he would wholeheartedly spread this throughout the entire country. Dr. King would, however, be very proud of his daughter Alveda who is a strong pro-life and true pro-woman individual who sees abortion for what it is - deprivation of rights to an entire class of humans.
Yes, I’m an older adult, and I am really amused by all these blogs. Stop depending on the government getting you through this world. It doesn’t work. Young Americans are now demanding that our government feed, clothe, shelter, educate and insure them. The majority believe it’s their rights - and the liberals tell them it is. Let’s just take it from the rich in the form of higher taxes and give it to the “poor”. We have choices, you either work or you don’t - Not working will make you poor. Stop buying things you can’t afford. It took me thirty years to pay off my home loan - four years to pay off my car and THEN I could afford a cell phone and computer. I had a job all my life, raised a family of four girls, had a good life, made a modest living, now on Medicare still pay for medicare insurance, still believe in Jesus Christ despite what the liberals say. No my family will not support Obama and his Chicago gang. And I forgot one other thing, My four daughters educated themselves through hard work and determination. All college grads - making a lot of money and now Obama says he wants their money to give to the “poor” I don’t think so. No vote from this end.
Has anyone read about Dr. King’s niece, who is against Obama? She made a good point about what her uncle stood for: He stood for equality across the board, not just for black people. He stood for peace/no violence. She noted that Barack does not actually stand for these things because he is pro-abortion- a very violent practice against unborn and even babies that survive botched abortions. He stands for letting those babies suffer and die. The only “equality”,if you can call it that, that he wants is for black people. I believe that the black community already runs the country through the ACLU. A white person can’t make a racial remark toward them, but they sure can to each other and to the white people. Come on, here. Let’s not be stupid and vote for such an immature person- one who only likes the attention and lied through his teeth the other night on (oops!) The same night King delivered his speech. If you believe that was accidental, you are very blind. If you really support what Dr. King stood for, and if indeed he did stand for equality, Obama is the last person you will vote for. Like so many people say “It’s not right to vote for someone because of their color.” I am not voting for McCain because he is white and I am not withholding my vote from Obama because he is black. It is what they stand for that will get my vote.
The Alaska Gov. is twice as qualified to be VP as Obama is to be President. He has never acomplished anything, never managed anything , 0 foriegn policy experience, no military record no leadership of anykind. Never gives a specific detail as to what he will do, so far all I have seen is his amasing ability to be completely inept at world afairs and look good while he does it. He is the Emperors Clothing fairy tale, An empty suit that is only popular because half of americans want a rock star that stands and acts like I am the second comming I will part the waters bring people together I am change, for president instead of a proven leader and experienced person like John McCain. Senetor McCain should be a no brainer to win the elections but the problem is that at least half of america seams to sufer from no brains. We have an historic moment for our country and it is great that a Black person and a Woman are runing for the higest and second highest ofice in our country. To bad it had to be an empty suit instead of a true leader like Martin Luther King. I think Dr King would have been proud of the moment and horified by the person. I know I knew him. He was no marxist hater of the rich class devider. He was a leader of magnitue and taught peace and justice. At least the Woman is a real accomplished fighter and leader.
It is racist to vote against Barack Obama because of his race.
It is also racist to vote for Barack Obama because of his race.
The only problem with your analysis, Cal, is that Dwight Eisenhower, Everett Dirksen, Edward Brook, etc., would be drummed out of today’s Republican Party. Conservatives hitched their ride on the Jesse Helms, Strom Thurmond wagon after LBJ and Northern Democrats pushed through the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and the Voting Rights Act in 1965. The current Republican Party is the home of racists, bigots, and whackos of the Right. If you don’t believe me, read this blog–or watch Brit Hume’s panel on any given night. To pretend otherwise is to be as nutty as John McCain.
100%
Martin Luther King would not be proud of the OBAMA choice. He was a Republican that believed in education, hard work and in his country. He was proud of America. Read all about him on the National Black Republican Association web site. I was proud of him in the 60’s but prouder once I began to realize what he stood for.
To all of you that have stated that you are going to vote for Obama because of his “”CHANGE”", please enlighten me and tell me what is “”CHANGE”". From what I can pick out of all of his speeches, what we will get is a “”MARXIST / SOCIALIST”". Third world state. When you start taxing the very persons who are providing jobs for the citizens of this country, they will move their company abroad where they can be treated fairly. I only hope that most educated people will see thru this guys smoke screen and not vote for him.
By the way in 2006 tthe Democrats kept saying they were going to change the way Washington was going to be run and they did, for the worst. I don’t know if I could afford another Democrat change.
Most conservatives don’t care about race one way or the other, and more and more of my friends (both black and white) are becoming Republican. Although I am a former Democrat turned Independent this may be the year I change to a Republican officially. I hoped when marching for equality in the 60’s for a black and/or woman candidate- but Obama was nominated based on nothing but his skin color and a bunch of pretty words. This is not what MLK was marching for. He had a dream, but Obama is a nightmare. McCain/Palin 08
Dear Mr. Thomas,
I am a Republican of more then 37 years and live in Los Angeles (Orange County now). I lived through the Watts riots, forced integration in high school, Viet Nam……..the whole nine yards. I voted for Bush in both elections. I watched the Democratic Convention over the last 4 days and I must say, it was very impressive. I applaud your comments about Martin Luther King. I also applaud Barack Obama and his apparent courage. I only hope that this country can once again get on the ‘right track’ through proper diplomacy and use of force only as a last resort when one on one or collective diplomacy fails. This is one of the many things us older Americans want.
There have been several commenters on here claiming that the southern democrats that switched to republican were racist. The only confirmed racist I am aware of is Robert Byrd, a democrat. Those republicans that switched did so because of the general moral decline of the democratic party and its move towards socialism which is about as un-american as you can get because rather than promote individual responsibility and self-governance it promotes reliance on the state to meet your needs.
I beleive the “Good” Doctor….Rev.Martin Luther King said……”Do not judge a man because of the color of his skin”.. Think again what the Good Doctor would say to the Millions who will vote for him,(Obama) because he is …black/afro-American and likewise Republican too.
NOT because of his policys, situation-analysis-knowdedge, nor ability to lead/protect/promote the “Most Powerful Country on Earth”.
Undecided in Georgia:
Because no one has a plan and apparently a clue as to what the President of the USA is.
Yes he is a man of color but he is still half white.
GReat comments. It’s too bad that today’s Republican party has forgotten the facts that you listed. They have decided that Blacks are not wanted or needed under the tent. That is a shame especially when so many of us would fit right in with evangelicals and anti-abortionists. John McCain still believes that all Blacks vote in lock-step.
Older Adult: I agree. It’s funny you mentioned Frederick Douglass….It took me 30 years to figure out what my grandmother meant when she said: “Shawney - be a Frederick Douglass black!”
MR THOMAS……..AS IN THE PAST TO THE PRESENT YOU GET TO THE ESSENCE.
YOU ARE A VOICE I OF REASON AND INTELLIGENCE IN A WORLD THAT HAS GONE A LITTLE MAD.
THANK YOU…..RICHARD
Shauna, thank you. Your answer is right on. But being an American who was a teenager in the 60’s, I saw what Dr. King was about. He was charismatic, but let me tell you I think there were and are greater men and women than Dr. King. Colin Powell, Condeleeza Rice, George Washington Carver, Frederick Douglass are just a few names that come to mind. The last persons named never and will never lead marches and yes, I do believe in equal rights for all people.
Barack Obama speaks of change, but never can exactly say what that change is. He talks the talk of a smooth politician, but doesn’t walk the walk. He should have walked out of his church with that hate speaker preacher after the first service he attended if he really loved this country even with all its flaws, but he chose to hang on for 20 years listening every Sunday he attended, though that may have been few and far between, to hatred being spewed from the mouth of Rev. Wright who should not call or ever have called himself a Christian.
Barack Obama is motivated only to make himself a name. He tries not to play the race card, but he keeps bringing it up in his speeches. “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.” Who exactly are “we” that he is referring? Where has he said in his speeches that he can lead this country when the moment he got into the Senate, he began running for President? 18 months of being a Senator and not being present a lot of that time does not make an experienced leader.
Karen Ballard: SO are you saying that if someone agrees with something someone has said that they MUST agree with EVERYTHING that person said? That is impossible with fallen man - the only one with whom I completely agree would be Our Lord, Jesus Christ. Your premise, also, is false - but that is exactly what folks do who wish to twist things. You know what? For a relativistic writer (as indicated by your post) you draw some pretty hard lines. But then again, such is the way of humanistic relativism. You are ABSOLUTELY sure there are NO ABSOLUTES!
Student in Nebraska: Great to see that schools haven’t dumbed down all the young people! Nicely written. Don’t EVER stop using your brain (as many seem to do), it’s clearly a good one…. A “party” is not ever always right. We all lie at some time, but thanks to the Grace of God, we can be saved from ourselves! Always stand for the right ideals, never give up and hold people accountable.
dick tullos:
Please, please go back to school! Dr. King didn’t want color to matter - but thanks to J. Jackson, Al Sharpton, et al….we see revisionist history. Freeloading off of government is a LIBERAL scheme - not a color scheme. Crime cities run by blacks…well, look at Kwame the “gangsta rapper hooligan mayor of Detroit” and it would seem like you got me there - BUT there is corruption in EVERY city - and they aren’t all run by blacks now are they? Again, you appear to be confused. Crime is not a color - it’s crime period. Think about this (if you can follow me here) blacks account for only about 17% of the total U.S. population, yet also account for much of the jail population. It’s caused by liberal ideology which has sadly, been embraced by many blacks because of their own leaders (they aren’t my leaders). Our grandparents would be in tears (and some are). That being said what you see in the black community is indicative of what is happening to the WHITE community as well…numbers don’t lie - but percentages can deceive…but only for so long. It doesn’t pay to be so ignorant.
Would Dr. King really be proud of Obama? Obama and his wife attended a church that preached that America is a white racist country. Michelle Obama’s speeches and writings reinforce their belief that blacks do not have the same opportunities as other races. I don’t believe Obama with his background and radical beliefs is the candidate that will unite the country.
Exceptionally well stated. I also do not intend for Senator Obama as his political philosophy runs counter to mine. However, I greatly appreciate his service to his country as an elected official.
cal must have run out of something to write about.
the result of kings work is increased racial seraration,
people freeloading off of the govt., and crime ridden
cities run by black people.
Mr. Thomas, brilliant article. I also agree with Ken and Robert F. However I don’t think we should call people Morons, misguided maybe. I am a
indpendent and kept an open mind while watching Obama during the campaign. From I’ve seen I can’t bring myself to vote for him.
Thank you Shauna for your intelligent and strong rebuff to Lynn. I very much agree with your comments and look forward to the day when color and race are non-issues any longer. Frankly, I don’t care what color a person is - black, white, brown, purple or polka-dotted. What does matter is the person’s beliefs and morals, and how his/her actions support those beliefs. Barack Obama’s problem is not race but his lack of conviction and plans to implement this ‘change’ he promotes constantly. Those people who can see through his lofty speeches understand that he nothing substantial to offer. Big dreams and goals only mean as much as the plan laid out to reach them. If he cannot provide a comprehensive plan he won’t be taken seriously.
I guess most of you posters only know about one or two of King’s speeches, huh? He constantly spoke up and out about the war and was accused of being a Communist. And he had no problem preaching in the pulpit of the injustices created and carried out by white folks against black folks. So don’t get it twisted.
I understand that you are proud of this country for Obama’s nomination, a man of color. The only problem is, he is not a black man, he is an ARAB!
Lynn….
You are sorely mistaken about the Republican party. Before this race for the presidency became all about empty change promises and which party would have the first woman or black as president, the Republican core…the base..the true Republicans out here were all pushing HEAVILY for Condi Rice to run! A BLACK WOMAN! Michael Steele was a “short list” name for VP for McCain or any other candidate that won the nomination. Bobby Jindel from LA, an Indian-American (India not native American) was on the ’short list’ for VP.
ALL STRONG Conservatives…all Minority…all in HIGH positions and HIGH praise within the Republican party.
Before you comment, make sure you know what you speak of…..
It is also forgotten that the Republican party was founded explicitly to end slavery. Before the Civil War, there were two parties. The Democrats were supporters of slavery, and Whigs were agnostic — they could take it or leave it. For a large faction of the Whigs, this wasn’t good enough and they formed the Republican Party.
The landmark civil rights legislation in the 60’s was also supported by Republicans in much higher proportions than by Democrats.
Today, Republicans are fighting for voucher programs so that urban students in failing schools can have a chance at getting an education. Democrats consistently put the interests of teachers unions ahead of the students, condemning them to whatever life you can put together without an education.
Democrats will support explicit racial discrimination in the form of affirmative action. That only helps a few individuals at the margins, but the Democrats seem to get a lot of mileage out of it.
Dr. King would be appauled at the black community today, and I firmly beleive that while he would be very proud of a black candidate, he would never vote for a socialist like barak obama.
It is a great day in America if someone who has the qualities and abilities to become president is able to do so in SPITE of the color of his skin. That is what I think Dr. King had in mind. In any job in any field the most qualified candidate should get the job. It used to be someone who was black but more qualified wouldn’t get the job simply because of the color of his skin, I hope that is not the case anymore.
That being said someone simply getting the job BECAUSE of the color of his skin I believe is terribly wrong. Affirmative Action puts under qualified people into jobs that they otherwise wouldn’t get, simply because of the color of the skin. That IS racism.
I love that our country has gotten past slavery and the lack of rights offered to the people not of the status quo. Obama being the democratic nominee even though he is black is a great thing, but Obama being the democratic nominee because he is black is a terrible thing. I don’t know what the case truly is, I believe Obama has been very ambitious and worked very hard to get where he is and I applaud him and America for not allowing that hard work to be futile simply because of the color of his skin. But those who would elect someone with terrible policies with only two years of Senate experience because they want to feel good that they elected a black person I disagree with.
Cal- Have you seen this quote before, I wish more people would use it to counter “Change we can believe in”
We all want progress, but if you’re on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.
C. S. Lewis
I do wish that it seemed as though the majority of black Americans remembered Dr. King, his speech(es), and his outlook on improving the conditions under which his race lived. From what I have read, I believe he believed that if given a real opportunity, the Black race could succeed on its’ own merits, characteristics, and determination. It seems to me now that the continued reliance on government and its’ agencies have left the race ( with obvious exceptions ) seemingly unable to develop the family infrastructures and support mechanisms necessary to promote generational, ongoing, sustainable, success. It takes a family to develop successful children regardless of what “village” in which they live.
Barack Obama is really great! He could be a democrat or a republican for all I care. What is important to me is how he connects with this country. Obama is one of those people who comes around every once in a while who came really unite people. People question him all the time for the smallest things all the time. One thing after Obama’s speech last night that really got me mad was when a Fox News Reported used Obama’s middle name and made it sound like it was negative. Stupid people do stupid things like that. If you want to talk politics, talk about the content of his speech. Not about his middle name. John McCain’s middle name, “Sidney” means “well watered land” And that isn’t even relivant to what I’ve been saying.
Sorry Cal, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation did NOT free the slaves. It was the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution that freed all slaves and prohibited slavery.
Washington state Republican “McCain in 08″
God Bless America….and God Bless Our Troops…
Proud to be an American…!!
Excellent thoughts, Shauna. Right on!
Response to: Comment by Ken
YOU READ MY MIND, AND I’M SURE A LOT OF OTHER AMERICANS. COULDN’T HAVE SAID IT BETTER THAN YOU!
As an Obama supporter, I appreciate your article and respect that you will not vote for him because of his policies, not because of his race. But let’s not forget that the Republican party of TODAY contains many pro-segregation Southern Dixiecrats who defected from the Democratic Party TO the Republican Party (who will likely NEVER have a candidate of color for president) as the Dems began to align themselves with the Civil Rights Movement. Exception: Robert Byrd of WV is a flaming racist within the Democratic Party. Unfortunately the Republicans have more Byrds/Helms/Thurmonds, young and old, than the Dems do in their party, so until they die off/change their minds/hearts, I guess as usual as a voter I have to pick the lesser of two evils.<<
If you want a party where race does not matter, then join the Republican party. If you want a party where your race does matter, then join the Democrats. Then you can be a supporter of racist policies like Affirmative Action. The biggest racists in America belong to the Democratic party. If you don’t believe me, read their quotes about ANY black who learned how to think and dumped the liberal ideology and is a conservative. Google quotes by liberals about Powell and Thomas just to name two. Then let me know if you have ever heard or read anything so vile or hateful in your life.
You think King would be proud? I think he would be appalled. The political process has become a revolting specticle with our so-called leaders nothing but sound bite emiting, corrupt, morally bankrupt “politicians”. The concept of civil service has all but disappeared. I can understand the flap that Michelle Obama’s “proud of my country” has raised because, at least as far as the political process goes and those we keep electing to office, we have very little to be proud of.
Shauna
Well said and I agree that many have lost Dr. King’s dream and vision for racial equality especially for his people. Obama is not MLK and in no way does he even come close. Sad that some would run on a MLK theme to advance their own agenda(s) like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and now Obama. Many in the republican party do wish for a black candidate and when those who aspire to become involved with politics will and are certainly recieved with open arms.
Mr. Thomas, I must respectfully disagree with you this time. I believe Barack Obama is not the kind of man MLK would be proud of. If anything, I think he would be disgusted that the country’s first man of color (still not sure just which color, and frankly, it’s not important) to be nominated for president would be a man of Obama’s convictions, associations and objectives. Dr. King dreamed of RACISM being a thing of the past. He did NOT dream of AMERICA being a thing of the past as do Obama and his desciples. This is, historically speaking, a sad day in America. A day when those who seek America’s demise are ushered to her helm. It is, in fact, heart-breaking. No, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would not be proud. Alas, his beautiful dream has beem molded into a nightmare.
Terry McGraw
I’m very tired of the right being called racist. I am sickened by the Newsweek scrub who claims an Obama loss means the US is racist. Please - give it a rest. Dr. King provided a standard - judge by character - that everyone on the left is quick to ignore.
Obama’s character is flawed as evidenced by his associations, his statements, the statements of his wife. He has insulted mainstream Americans on countless occassions (example - “white greed” comment, “clinging to guns and religion” comment, etc).
Obama is no MLK. Lets stop pretending.
I would take SIXTEEN more years of the same over the change that Obama will probably bring. For one thing, he can’t make up his mind which way he’s going. He keeps making all these promises about how he’s going to fix the world so I guess he thinks superman or something. Bottom line, I’d rather take more of the same, at least I know our rights, freedoms and country will be defended. Obama is full of you-know-what!
Wow!!!! Could someone tell me how much that cost???? Where did Obama get that money?????? He should of saved it for the people who are about to become hurricane victims. Or maybe to help pay heating oil bills this winter. Really the security, fireworks, concerts, etc. How Much Did that Cost and Who Paid for It and HOW??????
Leave it to the right-wing nut jobs who support the GOP and Fox News to criticize a statement of pride by Cal Thomas that does nothing but recognize how far this country has come. Surely people can agree on that. Instead, the radical right people who have their heads stuck in the sand take it as an opportunity to slam Obama based on the lies Fox News has fed them over the last two years.
It was refreshing to see a comment like this from Cal from a network that is so clearly biased towards the Grand Oil Party. I wish this was the type of discourse that prevailed in this country. But no — you people keep supporting the party that has sold this country to the Chinese and to the Saudi’s and has shipped millions of jobs overseas.
But that’s okay — all you radical right-wingers keep your heads in the sand — keep harping on about Obama’s “perceived” lack of experience, or his Greek Temple set at the convention — because we know that these issues are SO IMPORTANT.
And when the hubub about these “important” issues dies down, dust off the three G’s that you so often use when you have nothing to stand on — God, Guns and Gays. While you’re busy having your temper tantrum because things aren’t going your way, the rest of us will be looking forward to the future, proud of our country, proud of our party, and proud of our candidate.
The Republicans have some members who are racist, but the same could be said of modern Democrats, particularly Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.
I would submit, that Republicans have done more to help than Democrats. The welfare state policies of the Democratic party help to keep poor people poor while feeding them the rhetoric the government helping.
There were more appointments to high levels of government (Sec of State, Supreme Court) during Republican administrations than Democratic.
Hmmm.. I seem to recall statements about the soft prejudice of low expectations. How low do you need to go if you think everyone needs a goverment program to help them live their lives?
For a candidate that talks about UNITY tell me when has he actually done anything to unite the two parties????? He hasn’t!!!!!!!! To me Obama is like Tiger Woods who calls himself OTHER he is not black or asian he is other. We all tend to forget that Obama is half white!!! So he can’t even unify his own race in that he denies half of himself. That is not UNITY. The character of Obama is in question. He can not stand on anything at all without gettting a poll first. I do not always agree with McCain but I respect that he sticks to his beliefs and doesn’t change because the polls says its time to change. He is a man of convictions and I respect that more than the issues I disagree with from McCann.
Dr. King would have been proud of Obama for being a successful black man. There it ends for you see
Dr. King was a registered Republican. Look it up.
Responsible, measured article. As usual, you have made sense. I “like” the image and the aura of the man, Obama, but I too cannot vote for him because of his positions, his plans for change. Yes, change is a constant, and we could use some, mostly in Congress, but his type of change is NOT good for America. More taxes, less freedoms, and intensified attacks on our Constitution, especially 1st and 2nd amendment rights, cannot be tolerated. Thanks for your comments.
Why is it that those above who say America is the greatest place to live are having to scream it and with such anger?
Black Power!!!
I would like to hear pals who went to scholl with Obma (high schooh, college and Harvard law) say evident things that make them proud of him. I havn’t heard any. You wonder!
Democratic Convention wraps up and the hoopla of the Republican Convention heats up Americans are still left with a sense of a lot of hot air of any concrete plans to end the energy crisis in America. Northerners dread the upcoming onset of fall and colder weather wondering how they will be able to afford how to keep their homes and families warm. Southerners have been sweating the high cost of energy raising the thermostat to save on their electric bills. Families everywhere are wondering where else they can cut back to cover the cost of fueling up the family vehicle to get back and forth to work and take care of the necessities of life. There is no money left for relaxation and family fun. The stress level continues to rise. The average electric bill has risen 16% to cover the power companies additional production costs. A gallon of milk is almost as precious as a gallon of gas. The cost of every consumer product has risen sharply. American’s are stretched to the limit. Jobs are being lost, foreclosures are increasing at an alarming rate. Seems even the family pets are suffering the high cost of fuel as almost daily a new story is on TV about shelters being forced to euthanize record number of surrendered pets from those forced out of their homes or no longer able to care for them. The energy crisis in our country is far reaching and needs immediate attention. I am hoping whoever gets elected will get their act together and make this their #1 priority.
An interesting site to share…

Southern Democrats became the core of the Republican Party when LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act. The Democrats in the South became Republicans beginning with the defection of Strom Thurmond to the GOP and then following the roadmap of Barry Goldwater’s “States Rights” platform fought Integration tooth and nail throughout the South. The GOP set the South back twenty years.
I was there, it was evil. Your article is the worst you have ever written because I know that you are fully aware that it is not true.
You are one of my favorite writers Cal but this article is nuts!
Thats what I ask every Obama supporter I meet- What is his message? They can not answer. All they say is CHANGE!!!!! I’m about to scream- I now hate that word. I’m afraid of a candidate who refuses to tell us his platform other than more government programs. We should go back to the days when government was smaller and business was bigger- thats when America was at its greatest. The bigger we have let the government get- the worse our country has become. God help us- as we refuse to HELP OURSELVES
I’m having a problem understanding why anyone would vote for Obama. Not because of his race, not because of his politics but because a government without checks and balances is doomed. The house WILL be controlled by the Democrats, the senate WILL be controlled by the Democrats (most likely in a veto proof majority) and electing a Democrat to the oval office is a recipe for disaster. One party rule NEVER works.
Obama & Biden are so ready to do the job!
