Pick Joe Biden? What Are They Thinking?

The speculation on vice presidential choices reached a fever pitch yesterday as Howard Fineman went out on a limb in speculating that it would be Biden according to his sources. And then Biden faked reporters out by first telling them “I’m not the guy.” Analysts on TV gnawed over that for much of the evening, but then, oh the excitement!, he walked that back and said he didn’t know anything about whom Obama was picking. What fun for everyone to have something to talk about when actually the people who know anything aren’t talking and those who are probably don’t have any special insight.
Meanwhile, we’re being told that Biden would bring foreign policy expertise to the ticket. The New York Times talks up that aspect, as does The Wall Street Journal.
I’ve never bought into this idea that the vice presidential pick should balance out the presidential nominee on policy expertise. Does anyone think that a President Obama would lack for foreign policy advisers? Even as a candidate he’s supposed to have around 300 foreign policy advisers. What guarantee would there be that he’d listen to a Vice President Biden more than a Secretary of State or National Security Adviser?
Admittedly, Biden has been around the Senate for a long, long time but is his supposed expertise really that impressive?
He proudly pushed his big idea for Iraq which was to divide it up into three different ethnic territories. He trumpeted that idea in place of the concept behind the surge. How was the United States going to force such an ethnic division on the country? Were we supposed to start evacuating certain ethnic groups if they didn’t want to leave their homes and move to the majority region that Biden had picked out for them? Was that really such a better idea than General Petraeus’s plan? I’d like to see Biden explain that one.
Biden has been touting the value of his experience for 20 years. The Republicans are distributing this quote from 20 years ago when Biden ran for president:
“The White House isn’t the place to learn how to deal with international crisis, the balance of power, war and peace, and the economic future of the next generation,” he said at the time, referring to Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis.
Has 20 more years taught him that inexperience is now optimal?
Biden is very popular among the Inside the Beltway crowd. He talks a lot which the reporters enjoy. But, his manic smile at inappropriate times never indicated to me that he was such a very friendly guy. I thought that Clarence Thomas’s autobiography really caught the two-faced aspect of Joe Biden during the high-profile nomination hearings when he tried to sandbag Thomas by hitting him with an obscure quote taken totally out of context as one of his first questions after having promised no surprise questions. Kathryn Jean Lopez reminds us of Thomas’s conclusion on Smiling Joe.
Throughout my life I’ve often found truth embedded in the lyrics of my favorite records. At Yale, for example, I’d listened often to “Smiling Faces Sometimes,” a song by the Undisputed Truth that warns of the dangers of trusting the hypocrites who “pretend to be your friend” while secretly planning to do you wrong. Now I knew I’d met one of them.
And then, of course, there is Biden’s lovely penchant for really putting his foot in his mouth. Gawker has conveniently compiled links to some of his greatest hits. Stroll down memory lane and recall Biden’s comments on the need to have an Indian accent to enter a Delaware 7-Eleven or his explanation that the difference between Washington, D.C. and Iowa schools is the number of black students. My favorite is how he’s bragged about coming from a slave state. He seemed to think that he would have a special link to Southern voters by reminding them that Delaware was a border state during the Civil War because of its 1000 slaves. Perhaps, he’s thinking of how Delaware’s obstinate refusal to allow Lincoln to use that state as a model for his compensated emancipation plan made the Emancipation Proclamation more likely.
Delaware, he noted, was a “slave state that fought beside the North. That’s only because we couldn’t figure out how to get to the South. There were a couple of states in the way.”
And then in another interview on “FOX News Sunday:”
WALLACE: And, finally, Senator Biden — finally, we’ve got about 30 seconds left, but I can’t let you go without some politics. As we’ve mentioned, you’re in South Carolina right now, on the campaign trial. Thirty seconds or less, what kind of a chance would a Northeastern liberal like Joe Biden stand in the South if you were running in Democratic primaries against southerners like Mark Warner and John Edwards?
BIDEN: Better than anybody else. You don’t know my state. My state was a slave state. My state is a border state. My state has the eighth-largest black population in the country. My state is anything from a Northeast liberal state.
Is that an example of the great diplomatic skills that Biden would exercise as Designated Chief Foreign Policy Adviser to a President Obama? Would he then try to bond with African nations by sharing stories of the slave trade in American history? Would he go to the sub-continent and tell them about all the nice immigrants from India he’d met in Delaware 7-Elevens?
The secret analyst at Time’s “The Page”, advises Obama on why it would be good to pick Biden.
“Biden may be a ridiculous, overbearing blowhard, and he’ll doubtless make foolish blunders and imprudent comments if he’s on the ticket, but he’d still be an excellent campaigner, surrogate, and debater. He’d be thrilled at the prospect of being vice president (his own aspirations aside), and grateful and proud to have been chosen–-he’d work hard to make Obama look good, and not deliberately outshine him–-plus the chemistry will be appealing, and they genuinely like and respect each other, which will be winningly apparent.”
“Also, America is no longer a place where citizens care about plagiarism or hair plugs. A Biden pick would immediately elevate Obama’s gravitas, give him a semblance of humility, delight the media, and reassure the nation that a grownup is involved. Democrats would be simultaneously relieved and apprehensive, but they’d be pleased with the choice overall. Plus, Biden is Catholic, is a Washington insider in a good way (a hardworking man of the people unchanged by three decades inside the Beltway), and has a tragic history with a happy ending.”
That may all be true. But is it worth the risk that he’ll have another foot-in-the-mouth moment? If what they want is a well-respected Democrat on foreign policy, why not Sam Nunn? Now, there’s a guy from a real slave state — can Joe Biden top that? Seriously, Nunn would be the sober version of Joe Biden without the manic mouth.

I wrote about this last night at tableofwisdom. This afternoon Barack Obama will stand before the Springfield State House to campaign with his Vice Presidential nominee where Abraham Lincoln once served.. I expect that he will stand in front of a picture of Lincoln and try to imply a correlation between himself and the venerable FIRST Republican President. He could only get away with such an abominable act of desecration due to the deficiency of American History curriculum in public education.
Without the ignorance of history upon which Obama greatly depends, people would easily recognize the glaring hypocrisy he displays by committing such an act.
Once upon a time in America, a majority of Whigs and a diminutive number of Democrats - disgusted with both of their party’s approbation toward slavery - founded a NEW party upon the principal that A HUMAN BEING CANNOT BE THE THE PROPERTY OF ANOTHER HUMAN BEING.
These great men recognized the contradiction between their present reality and the proposition put forward in the Declaration of Independence that asserted all men are CREATED equal and that their rights and value as human beings come not by how much money they acquired or from what bloodline they came but rather by God.
The party of Lincoln has not changed much in its stance; neither has the Democrat Party changed since then. The Republican Party still stands vehemently for a defenseless minority of human beings who are being denied their God given rights, whose lives are being taken for the sake of convenience for those who claim OWNERSHIP over them. The Democrats are still the party fighting to protect a multi-billion dollar industry akin to the slave trade - except extermination of the of the victims is the ultimate goal in the case of the abortion trade (rather than subjugation).
What a national tragedy it would be for the first black President of the United States to be a man who rejects the very proposition on that proverbial “check” that Dr. Martin Luther King brought to Washington D.C. to “cash” , that proposition from our Declaration of Independence, the brilliance of which Dr. King lauded in his great speech. Beware of Senator Obama’s check, which under closer scrutiny may just prove to be a forgery.
For Obama to have the AUDACITY to imply some type of moral equivalence between himself and the great Abraham Lincoln would be an act of desecration. This is the man who has no compunction about partial birth abortion or leaving a “botched abortion” baby to die alone in a utility closet because the mother’s “intent” was to abort it.
If he has the audacity in which he seems to pride himself and he stands there claiming the mantle of Lincoln, how long would it take him to sit down on a throne in the Holy of Holies and demand to be worshiped?
I guess the answer would just be a question of how long it would take to first rebuild the Temple?
Being 70 years old, I have followed politics, especially presidential campaigns, for a long time. Mr. Obama’s choice for VP, while understandable, was unwise. I can remember sometime back in the late 80’s when Mr. Biden was guilty of flagrant plagiarism. It was a huge news item. As a writer, I feel that this was tantamount to a theft. That is, stealing another’s words without giving appropriate reference. In my opinion — a very serious issue, which affects credibility.

Gee it seems like only yesterday that Biden was lecturing Scott Ritter in regard to his opinion on the Iran Contra scandal. Ritter as I remember was asked by congress to give an opinion to which Biden stated that he (Ritter), did not hold a labor grade that entitled him to any opinion at all.
Now, as a Republican and moreover, a decent American, I want to thank Obama for choosing this neo nazi moron as a running mate. I would challenge other responsible citizens to think before voting for someone like Biden who is so full of himself that there is no room for the good of the people.

Joe Biden? Oh, yeah, when running for president, he put out a bio sketch with too many college degrees listed on it. He blamed it on a clerical mistake, but no one believed him. Then, he put the word out that he was a member of Mensa, the organization for people who have an IQ of 175 (genius) or higher. Of course that was also a lie. Then, he finally dropped out of the campaign when he was caught making a speech, which was word-for-word the speech of an Irish politician.

May i offer a little insanity- the democratic convention will be a wide open free for all. Obama will not get the required votes on the first ballot & neither will Clinton. So we will go ballot # 2, 3, or higher. I dark horse will emerge to take the monination & all this speculating as to who the VP will be will be for naught. Fun times ahead?????

McCain should pick Michael Phelps.
I was previously aloof to all of the Olympic hype, but now I really admire this young man. The left wing junk food Nazis are aghast due to his Frosted Flakes endorsement - and that’s a good thing. Michael Phelps better take out an extra insurance policy to protect his new fortune from the predatory trial lawyers who will soon look to blame him for all America’s obesity (as soon as his net worth crosses their threshold).
Maybe Phelps would be a good VP candidate for McCain. He’s young, energetic, cosmopolitan and his “stock” has never been higher. Otherwise, I suppose he could serve as Surgeon General. It’s not like the Surgeon General has to operate on anybody. I mean, if Maxine Waters could do it…
Anyway, I don’t know if Phelps has any political affiliation but he should be a Republican because he actually had to work harder and longer than everyone else - and if liberals made the rules, that gentleman he beat out for his 7th Gold Medal probably would have been given the Gold by “handicap” since “Phelps had already won enough” and he only won by a fraction of an inch.
Nevertheless, I hope Phelps continues to surprise us with these types of endorsements deals. It’s worth it to get those “politically correct” frauds all riled up. I think Phelps would make an EXCELLENT Marlboro Man.

I couldn’t agree more at what a LUNATIC Joe Biden is and I sent Obama an e mail indicating that very same thing, plus informed him that he will lose my vote (and I’m sure thousands more) if he picks Biden for VP.
It’s my personal opinon that the foremost choice for Obama’s VP would be Nancy Pelosi !
I sure wish someone would put a bug in his ear about that idea, because I truly believe they would win hands down with that ticket.

This article is just another example of the worthless media in this country trying to create reality. The whole plagiarism episode was nothing more than a media-created event. Joe didn’t plagiarize anything, he just forgot one time to accredit Kinnock as the author of the material he used in a speech - a speech that he had used a dozen times before and had always accredited Kinnock. This time it happened to be taped by John Sasso, a Dukakis operative who gleefully sent it wherever it could do the most damage. Dukakis later fired Sasso and apologized to Joe, but damage is always done on the front page in LARGE PRINT, while apologies show up in the back somewhere in little print.

While I am not a supporter of Obama, Biden is at least a grown up on foreign policy and would make an Obama presidency feel a little bit safer. I don’t know what else Biden gives in regards to politically helping a ticket that is fatally flawed at the top.

Maybe when he said is state is a slave state, he meant that his state is dealing with many of the issues that other past slave states have dealt with, post-reconstruction. Ever think of that???

As I see it, the press has been VERY nice to Obama while virtually ignoring McCain. The 2000 election is a perfect example as to what the press can do to an election. I believe that Gore’s hammering in the press was part of the reason he lost while Bush was enjoying the “good ol boy” image in the press. Although Obama has enjoyed “good press” these many months, the press IS fickle. The question should be whether or not the press will run with Biden’s many “scandals” and misspeak. Once both VPs are announced, the press will weight and measure each candidate once more and then decide what will sell papers most. If, say, McCain chooses Lieberman (a man with little dirt), will the press then hammer Biden in order to make a buck?

I went to HS with Joe Biden who seemed like a nice guy at the time. However, after 36 years in the Senate, the real Joe Biden has emerged: an arrogant, nasty blowhard who “never worked for anybody else”. Every day he thanks God Barbara Boxer is in the Senate so he won’t be the dumbest U.S. Senator.
If Obama chooses Biden, I don’t want to ever hear Obama or the Democrats harp about McCains age. Biden is a half-step behind McCain agewise. And about Obama and his theme of “CHANGE”??? Biden is “old Washington politics” himself, and another ‘do-nothing’ Democrat besides. If the DNC had half a brain (ha!) they would throw this loser Obama under the bus and reinstate Hillary.

This should have been easy but they chose an absolute tyro of a candidate who isn’t qualified for the job he already has, much less the Presidency. Joe Biden, wow, I hope so. If sen Obama picks anyone but sen Clinton, he is dead meat. He has already dropped behind McCain in some polling and no matter whom he picks other than Mrs Clinton, he has problem, even within his own party. It is a simply a matter of leadership, Obama has none. He has nothing to stand on other than his blackness. He has nothing to run on other than change. Change to a socialistic government to prepare us for full blown communism.
Sen. Obama wishes to weaken the nation. Quite simply put, any organization as large as the United States that is run completely from one mass government buraucracy will eventually fall completely apert due to bad leadership. To be blunt, we are approaching this problem already. We can see from the silly parlaimentary rules in the house and senate that those rules are set up to stop the peoples wishes frm ever coming to a vote. Our constitution never asked for all those rules. The constant call for a czar for this and a czar for that is explained away as making sure that one man/woman is responsible for that section of government. This places the responsibility even further away from the president and the lawmakers. Gives them a cusion, as it were, and also gives the socialistic system another foothold in our government. Anytime one man is responsible, he can be controlled better by just one man. Whole sections of our government are now under control of just one man and he reports directly to the president.
Oh, yeah, the opposing party can sit there and rake him over the coals at hearings. Just imagine the whole system with no or little opposition. Right there is the communistic form of government. The stage is set for Obama and his running mate.
Let’s just make sure that a true leader that envisions the country as free and independent thinking can be elcted. Biden is not one of those and certainly Mr Obama is not. Neither of them has any potatoes in his pants to face anything with true starch. They are both gutless and neither accepts reponsibility for anything.

Yes, Obama has the foreign policy around him to the point where he doesn’t need a V.P. to make up for that, but it helps in the general election is what people are saying. Many people won’t vote for Obama because they are uneasy about his lack of experience and knowledge of foreign policy. So, what better way to make those voters comfortable than putting Joe Biden on the ticket? He’s a blue collar, down-to-earth, Catholic, rural, non-elitist politician. He appeals to the everyday American - better known as those who voted for George Bush because they’d “like to share a beer with him”. He can’t deliver one single state - but no running mate has for decades.
Why else is he good? He doesn’t take an insult lightly, like Barack does. He’s not afraid to voice his opinion and attack right back. He has my respect in the Democratic primary when he was attacking Rudy Giuliani & George Bush rather than his fellow Democrats. He also doesn’t base his attacks on childish, inaccurate remarks like John McCain does (he’s a little more mature than that).
Betsy, how are you honestly calling Joe Biden’s credentials “supposed expertise”? He is Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. They don’t really come more experienced than that. There is a reason he is so highly regarded by everyone in the Senate - from John Warner to Chuck Hagel to Hillary Clinton. There’s a reason the president of Georgia asked him to come visit over the weekend. There’s a reason he was involved in the START Treaty with Breshnev. There’s a reason he was on the phone with Musharraf during the crisis before Bush was. There’s a reason most world leaders are highly familiar with him. Because his foreign policy experience is unmatched in the Senate.
He provides reassurance to those that are uneasy about Obama’s lack of experience, his ability to attack is unmatched, he appeals to the everyday American, and he is one of the most highly respected Americans in the world.
