We need a lot more stories like this one especially here in the US where people abort children because of their sex or just convenience. What an abomination to God.
Thank you

I don't believe we are touched by the Lucias in our lives and throughout the world because we are patronizing them. Perhaps rather we see them as heroes. Of course not the kind that have super powers, but even better than that: The kind that has super meekness.

It is precisely in this meekness we begin to see what true strength really is. It's not the guy who can fly that impresses us. It's the guy who can barely walk that awes us. The kind of human that does everything we do, yet has a disability on top of it all, and not only that, doesn't complain about it. In fact, they wear a smile. We, on the other hand, see in ourselves --- our 'healthy' selves, that is --- anything but that tremendous strength and courage and power that we see in Lucia.

When we see Superman, we can imagine that -- we could do that, respecting the circumstances. But when we see Lucia, on the other hand, we are shocked, taken aback by the strength which we utterly lack and which she has so much of. And in that meekness --- that super power --- we see a glimpse of He who conquered the world by His meekness.

The comment from Lucia, "But I think it is better not to lament one’s situation and just to confront it and accept it. Then it’s simple."

Indeed, simple and yet something we find hard to do. That's where I believe faith steps in and we use our suffering to get closer to God. I think we have our difficulties to make things better for others. We need to use these times of suffering to do what God calls us to do.

A simple statement but very powerful.

Thank you for sharing, it made my day!

Steve,

Had to read your post a few times. Think I understand. Triumph over adversity to put the rest in our place kind of thought. Guess I can see that. Still not sure that's what I read in the article, or from many of the replies, but I can concede your point.

cheers m8

Apologies if this is a dupe post, browser stalled first time I submitted and I didn't want to wait to see if my reply made it through.

Father Jonathan,
Thank you for relaying Lucia's story. After reading it I was ashame of all the times I thought my life was not going the way I wanted it to. I didn't have the best car, or the biggest house, or maybe my kids didn't play soccer as well as the other kids. When I really needed to be thankful to God for all he has given me, all he has allowed me to do in my life. We need to see more people like Lucia, who take what life has given them, and glorify God in the blessings He has bestowed upon them.
