A Man Who Loved His Family and His God

All of the many tributes to Tony Snow are true: good man, great husband and father, kind, self-effacing, always concerned more about others before himself, without guile (of how many in the news business could that be said?). I had the privilege of knowing Tony on another and far deeper level. When he was at FOX in Washington, I would often visit with him in his office. You can tell a lot about a man who brags on his wife and children without prompting. Tony loved Jill, completely and unconditionally. I have rarely seen such love in a man for his wife. Her picture and those of their children were prominently displayed in his office. It was as if he was saying, “Yes, what I do is important, but these are the most important.”
Tony and I often spoke about God and I was pleased to see his faith blossom and then deepen. Two years ago he spoke at a media dinner the night before the National Prayer Breakfast. The room was full of fellow journalists and entertainment people. What he said deeply moved me and everyone else in the room. I will be writing about that in my syndicated column next week.
In the old CBS TV show “Touched by an Angel,” Andrew, the angel of death once said: “Death is nothing to fear, but it is something to prepare for.” Tony was prepared and now he rejoices in another and better place with the Lord he loved. It is now my privilege and that of all those who knew Tony to pray for and care for Jill and their wonderful children.
