Once a Pedophile, Always a Pedophile

By Lis Wiehl
Former Federal Prosecutor/FOX News Legal Analyst

Brooke’s uncle…her stepfather responsible for her kidnapping, rape, and death? Unthinkable…But sexual assault of a child is unlike any other crime. Why? Because someone who is willing to cross the line to pedophilia can never turn back. A shoplifter can be rehabilitated, a burglar can be rehabilitated, even a murderer can be rehabilitated. But not a pedophile. Once a pedophile, always a pedophile. And the children drawn in are the most hapless of victims…betrayed by the people most responsible for taking care of them…tragic.

How does one know that “Once a pedophile, always a pedophile”?
——————————————————————————————–
How you ask? It’s been proven scientifically. There are voluminous Psychiatric and psychological studies. They commit their crimes driven by a different desire than other criminals (including sexual offenders of adults).

That is why pedophiles should be given severe penalties for their crimes. What the Supreme Court did recently indicating that pedophiles should not be subject to the death penalty is unthinkable. As you have stated these crimes will be with their victims for the rest of their lives.

I agree with you on pedophiles! They should get the death penalty within 30 days of being setenced of such a crime. There is no reason any society should put up with them and wasting taxpayers money. They give good men everywhere a bad name and I have no sympathy whatsoever for them.

I now understand why throughout the Old Testament these type of people were put to death. They are just to evil to live.

I agree with “once a pedophile, always a pedophile”. Same as an alcoholic, the desire is always there and the tendency to do it again.

Vermont’s laws are outrageous! The judges and lawmakers of that State should be ashamed of themselves and I hope the feel some guilt over the death of this innocent child! Dale Lewis

I agree with Lis. You can never remove that vile urge from someone, no rehabilatation will ever work.
It’s like a dog can be domesticated, but it will always have the urge to bite if need be.
Disgusting, and shame on Vermont and all it’s liberal politicians and lawyers. Protect the scum and suffer the little child.

Sad and disgusted in New York City

Pedophiles can never be let out of prison. The Liberals will never learn that lesson

I am curious as to the parents of these two girls that are involved in this mess.
Particularly the mothers - can’t believe they did not know something was wrong.

I so totally agree. Sexual crimes are unlike any other crime committed and they are usually committed on the weakest and most vulnerable in our society. Sexual predators CANNOT be rehabilitated and will only creat more heartache and misery if left in society. The Death Penalty for sexual crimes against children? That would be the smartest thing to do but our Supreme Court has decided “death” for destroying the life of a child is out of bounds. Life in prison without Parole? The next best thing and certainly not out of bounds for thoughtful and responsible Americans. Lets get together as protectors of our greatest resource and pass laws that put pedophiles away for “life”.

I agree, in fact I think most people would, but did this “Opinion” need to be stated in seven sentences?

Here’s a little “opinion” to get your readers’ blood boiling . . .

I haven’t done the research (because I don’t care enough about the topic to spend my time that way), but it seems, barring the occasional psychopath, that the number of sexual assaults against children ending in the death of those children has risen in direct proportion to the amount of law enforcement activities targeted against the pedophiles.

If your assertion - pedophiles cannot be rehabilitated - is true, or mostly true, and if society continues to hunt pedophiles into extinction, and if self-preservation (including freedom) is an animal’s highest innate mandate, then we are going to continue to see a rise in the deaths of children who are also victims of sexual assault.

Again, I haven’t done the research, so I am probably completely off base (all of which belong to us).

Ready…FIGHT!

Another “sad but true” fact in this arena is the overwhelming population of pedophiles and sex offenders which currently exist in our country. This is confirmed by the number of registered sex offenders which show to be residing in the neighborhoods of every city and town in America. We were recently advised of one who moved in next door to us. I looked him up online in the state’s sex offender registry, which is public record, and confirmed his address as well as viewed his photo. Fortunately, all the lots along our mile of homes are 5 acres in size, so at least we enjoy somewhat of a “cushion” between us.
I believe in giving everyone a second chance, so when he moved in with his reportedly new wife, we carried on as if all were normal. He’s an older man in his 60’s of slight build who, like everyone else in the neighborhood, mows his acreage, works in his garage, and keeps his property neat and clean. I’ve not spoken to him, but we have waved to each other on occassion across the yard. For now, everything seems to be proceeding comfortably and I don’t anticipate any problems. However, because what you say is nearly always true, that pedophiles are hardly ever rehabilitated, my wife and I will be on guard as long as he lives there. We have grandchildren who frequently visit and play outside in our fenced backyard. I am a retired police officer. He is a convicted sex offender. I WILL be watching him.

Lis Wiehl may be a good attorney, and a good former federal prosecutor — but since she’s not a psychologist, she is thoroughly unqualified to assert that shoplifters, burglars and even murderers can be rehabilitated, but not pedophiles. We recognize that some shoplifters, burglars and murderers may be beyond redemption, beyond reasonably safe rehabilitation, just as some pedophiles are. But there are also many shoplifters, burglars, murderers and even pedophiles who can, indeed, be rehabilitated. Psychologists recognize (I am not a psychologist, but I read their works) that some pedophiles (like some murderers, for example) act on a sudden, selfish impulse, and may be amenable to rehabilitation; others, according to psychologists I have read, are more or less suffering from what amounts to a type of social retardation or immaturity. These may also benefit from good rehabilitation therapy. It is radically unfair to group all of them into the same category with those pedophiles who may, indeed, be beyond the help of rehabilitation therapy. The first two groups may be rehabilitated and returned to productive society, with appropriate safeguards and limitations; the others should certainly be removed from society to protect our most important citizens — our innocent children.
