[...] How did I come to reading Jeff Fairchild’s comment? Sigh … I don’t know. I could insert a screed of text here about how I am realizing to what depths I despise the comments function attached to legitimate journalistic offerings on the Internet, but that diverts me away from my discussion with Jeff. Lets just say that I am fine with non-journalists like Jeff Fairchild (assumption of course) and myself (evident I am sure) commenting on blog posts which are clearly written to throw chum in the waters. Sadly Jeff got sucked in, but in a way, I am glad because Jeff is someone I really want to understand better. If you have to subject yourself to this shameless flamebait (its simply HAS to be) feel free to visit http://foxforum.blogs.foxnews.com/2008/10/02/bbeckel_1003/comment-page-3/#comments [...]

Sir, I'll try and be polite, even though watching congress go thru their gymnastics of talk loud and do nothing!!! They should be ashamed to collect a pay check. We have a serious problem in this country with regards to oil drilling. The comments from both sides of the asle are filled with lots of should have, would have or perhaps we should form a investigative commitee. Let's start drilling and stop all the arguing. Members of congress remind me of two kids at summer camp who both want the top bunk. They stay up arguing and at 3:00am they are both on the floor sleeping!!!! Members of congress need to look outside and see the people. They're supposed to represent us. Pass the legislation and worry about the fine points later, BUT PLEASE GET IT DONE.

I would encourage most of the people who have posted here, as well as those who make similar vitriolic, personalized attacks on liberal blogs to consider what you are doing to further real problem-solving and conversation - not much. I've followed closely every election since 1960 when I was 11 years old and I'm more worried about the inability of people in this country to converse intelligently and respectfully than whether or not they agree on an issue. I have worked with young children and their future teachers for thirty years, and continue to advocate on a daily basis for collaboration, conflict-resolution without hostility and name-calling, getting the facts straight, and above all - developing the ability to look at a problem from multiple perspectives and acquire empathy for others. This country will move forward no matter who we elect as the next president. But the wounds we create by the kind of words I've seen posted here are inexcusable and unnecessary. Our goal should be to seek common ground - find the place, however miniscule, where we can agree and start there. It's not a naive approach - it works, and both Mr. McCain and Mr. Obama are known for their ability to understand and model this concept. I see them trying to have a civil conversation - it is their surrogates and people like those who post here and on other sites that can't seem to step out of personalized attack mode. I would ask all of you to just be quiet, listen more (and harder) and read everything you can get your hands on that represents their own words, not those of people who just want to hear themselves talk. Spend the next week reading Mr. McCain's "Hard calls: Great decisions and the extraordinary people who made them" and Mr. Obama's "Audacity of hope" - and don't type another word on this blog (or any other) until you have.

A good point was made, this IS America were everyone should have the right to give their opinion, that is the reason that I most love this country. So on behalf of my republican brethren I apologize, I disagree with you whole heartedly, but name calling is beneath both my party and America.
