On Conservative Comments

By Bob Beckel
Democratic Strategist/FOX News Political Contributor

I want to thank the hundreds of FOX Forum readers who commented on my last post concerning the arrogance of George Bush. The response from many self-described “Republicans,” “conservatives” and “right wingers,” brought tears to these liberal eyes. The warmth; “you left-wing commie,” the understanding; “you idiot,” the compassion; “screw you” meant more to me then you can possibly know.

Is it my imagination, or are many of you angry? If I were a Republican and facing the rejection of conservatism on an unprecedented scale this coming November, I suppose I’d be angry as well.Perhaps I can help you understand why your political philosophy is about to be rejected by the American people.

Here are just some of the reasons:

1. Conservatives are supposed to be fiscally responsible yet when your crowd inherited a trillion-dollar surplus from Bill Clinton, Bush/Cheney and a Republican Congress turned it into a $3-trillion-dollar deficit.
2. Conservatives strongly support the war in Iraq but won’t help pay for it. Never has our country been at war without asking and getting our citizens to help bear the financial burden…until this war. Conservatives don’t want to give up Bush’s tax cuts for the top 5% of wage earners to help pay for this war. Why?
3. The American people got tired of being lectured on “family values” by conservative clergy and Republican members of Congress, e.g. Larry Craig, who didn’t practice what they preached.
4. Or maybe the voters got tired of Republicans controlling the US House of Representatives for 12 years during which they handed out more wasteful pork projects than all the pork handed out by Democrats in the 42 years preceding the GOP takeover.
5. Or maybe voters got angry when they learned the Vice President of the United States manipulated intelligence and misled the American people on why war with Iraq was in our national security interests.
6. Or maybe the public didn’t like George Bush vetoing legislation to provide health insurance for millions of kids.
7. Or maybe the public got embarrassed by Republicans in the Bush Administration who refused, in the face of overwhelming evidence, to accept the reality of global warming, aka “The Flat Earth Society”.

It’s not conservatives but conservative leaders who have caused the problems. I’ve seen liberalism hijacked by incompetent leaders and watched the resulting rejection by voters. I know you all think liberal leaders are still not competent, but that’s not the issue. It is time for conservatives to do some soul searching and find new leaders. Believe it or not I wish you well.

You know what’s sad? Most conservatives I meet are nice people. Even those of you who attack me with your comments are probably decent people who believe your political agenda is the right one. For many of the preceding three decades most Americans agreed with you. I believe you love your country and are patriots. I can disagree with your politics but not do it disagreeably.

So what is sad is that I feel compelled to write this because some of you refuse to grant me the same understanding. I believe in a liberal political agenda. I have a right to believe what I believe without you calling me a commie. I also love my country so please don’t call me unpatriotic. I’m a father who loves his family so please don’t accuse me of being “anti-family” as some of you have.

This time around my side will win and I believe by a big margin. You don’t have to like it, but perhaps you might refrain from “hating” my side. In all the years of Republican control I never accused anyone of being unpatriotic, or fascist, or bad people. Maybe you would grant my side the same courtesy.

Happy 4th of July and God bless America and you.

Sir, I’ll try and be polite, even though watching congress go thru their gymnastics of talk loud and do nothing!!! They should be ashamed to collect a pay check. We have a serious problem in this country with regards to oil drilling. The comments from both sides of the asle are filled with lots of should have, would have or perhaps we should form a investigative commitee. Let’s start drilling and stop all the arguing. Members of congress remind me of two kids at summer camp who both want the top bunk. They stay up arguing and at 3:00am they are both on the floor sleeping!!!! Members of congress need to look outside and see the people. They’re supposed to represent us. Pass the legislation and worry about the fine points later, BUT PLEASE GET IT DONE.

I would encourage most of the people who have posted here, as well as those who make similar vitriolic, personalized attacks on liberal blogs to consider what you are doing to further real problem-solving and conversation - not much. I’ve followed closely every election since 1960 when I was 11 years old and I’m more worried about the inability of people in this country to converse intelligently and respectfully than whether or not they agree on an issue. I have worked with young children and their future teachers for thirty years, and continue to advocate on a daily basis for collaboration, conflict-resolution without hostility and name-calling, getting the facts straight, and above all - developing the ability to look at a problem from multiple perspectives and acquire empathy for others. This country will move forward no matter who we elect as the next president. But the wounds we create by the kind of words I’ve seen posted here are inexcusable and unnecessary. Our goal should be to seek common ground - find the place, however miniscule, where we can agree and start there. It’s not a naive approach - it works, and both Mr. McCain and Mr. Obama are known for their ability to understand and model this concept. I see them trying to have a civil conversation - it is their surrogates and people like those who post here and on other sites that can’t seem to step out of personalized attack mode. I would ask all of you to just be quiet, listen more (and harder) and read everything you can get your hands on that represents their own words, not those of people who just want to hear themselves talk. Spend the next week reading Mr. McCain’s “Hard calls: Great decisions and the extraordinary people who made them” and Mr. Obama’s “Audacity of hope” - and don’t type another word on this blog (or any other) until you have.

A good point was made, this IS America were everyone should have the right to give their opinion, that is the reason that I most love this country. So on behalf of my republican brethren I apologize, I disagree with you whole heartedly, but name calling is beneath both my party and America.

Mr.Beckel,
I hereby award you the ” Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Award” for ‘blog journalism’.

Yes you are probably correct that the few remaining conservatives will go down in flames in the November Elections, despite the plain and stunningly clear fact that the “change 2006 Congress” has remarkably lower approval ratings than “Bush”.

I would assume that ‘your side’ will quite enjoy a 16-18% increase in direct taxes for ‘healthcare, etc. (in addition to the average/typical 45% of federal/state/local burdens) for a whopping ~2/3rds of ‘middle class’ income being turned over to an increasingly marxist leaning government. Yes indeed, I fully expect the democrats to sweep the elections, followed by the onset of the greatest transfer of wealth since the Bolshevik Revolution. I further predict that the impending Capital Gains increases and the rise of dividend income to 40% will ensure that foreign investment will almost entirely flee ‘elsewhere’ to more stable & advantageous market areas. I would also expect that the worlds financial center will quickly move from New York to London, etc. …. the result will be catastrophic and probably as long lasting as the economic decline/malaise that resulted (12 yrs.) from the “Great Society”.
With a greatly reduced GNP, who is going to PAY for all this ‘utopia’ ???????? I guess we will all have to wait for another 4 years to see if the demo PACs (trial attorneys, NEA, AFSME, AFLCIO, etc. — the proletariat of ‘change’ ;) can do a better job than those of us who truly ‘work’ for a living.

My ancestors came to the USA because of opportunity. How much opportunity will be available when the average middle class person has to pay 66% of his/her income in direct income to the ’state’? —- that HAS to be a MODERN DEFINITION of SLAVERY. You all know what happens when a populace discovers that they are (economic) slaves or no longer benefit from the bulk of their own labors - they leave/emigrate or they overthrow by force of arms. We’ll see what-side-you’re-on when the people ’storm the Bastille’ when they find out how badly they’ve been ‘had’ with this so-called ‘change’.

After hearing all these months about registering the Hispanic Vote, I would like to have an answer, as to HOW that can be achieved, when there is no checking on Citizenship, but only if they have a valid ID.
You must be a Citizen to Vote. If no checking is done, then the Vote is Rigged and the Party doing the most to Issue ID’s only are the Democrats.
Maybe a Class Action Suit against the outcome in November is what it will take to have a Fair Vote.
I have no issues with any Nationality, as long as they are Citizens………..
Non-Citizens DO NOT have, nor are they Entitled, to the same rights as a US Citizen.

Thank you for listening

The American people don’t reject political philosophies, at least not the people who act according to their
convictions. The American people do, however reject poor leaders regardless of their politics. Some
Americans choose to stay informed about political leaders in regards to their actions and the policies they
support, some do not. Those that do not are led by soundbites on the evening news and subject to being
misinformed. I do not have much time but would like to respond to your list of “reasons”.

1) Any informed person that is concerned with fiscal responsibility would never vote for the most liberal
person in the Senate. Any person who would vote for Obama because of a concern for fiscal responsibility in our government is most certainly uninformed.

2) Any informed person knows that Conservatives, along with Liberal and Independants, are going to pay for this war. I don’t agree with prosecuting a war on debt but that debt will still have to get paid. It may get paid by our kids and/or grandkids but it wouldn’t be the first time that a future generation had to absorb the cost of a preceeding generation’s efforts. Look at Social Security. Any person who would vote for Obama out of concern for Conservative’s willingness, or lack thereof, to pay for this Nation’s current military engagements is most certainly uninformed or would have never voted for a Republican in the first place.

3) Any informed person knows that the “family values” platform is a high priority to conservatives,
regardless of what some perverted, hypocritical Republican politicians or clergy members get caught up in. They also understand that the same “family values” platform is joked about within Liberal circles. Any
person who would vote for Obama out of concern for “family values” is most certainly uninformed.

4) Any informed person knows that while Republican’s did control the Congress during this wasteful spending, those pork projects had the names of politicians of all political stripes. They also know that the
Democratic led Congress has not and will most certainly not lift a finger to limit pork barrel spending. Any person who would vote for Obama out of concern for pork barrel spending is most certainly uninformed.

5) Any informed person would simply ask you to provide proof of this accusation.

6) Any informed person would know that the legislation you are referring to was unnecessary considering how many of those kids, and their parents, didn’t have insurance because they chose not to. They also know that it was simply a trap to lead the country into a situation whereby government healthcare would be the logical next step. Any person who would vote for Obama because they want government run healthcare would never have voted for a Republican regardless.

7) Any informed person knows that the current presumptive Republican candidate does indeed voice concern over global warming and that George W. Bush is not running for President this time around. Any person who would vote for Obama because of what President Bush did is most certainly uninformed.

You may be right… Republicans may be rejected this next election cycle. But, if Democrats benefit from
anything, it will be from a lack of understanding and/or an unwillingness to stay informed on the part of
the American voters…. not a rejection of conservatism by people who know what they are doing.

Bob, how can you NOT call democrats like moveon.org, code pink, John Murtha and Reid/Pelosi unpatriotic. They simply cannot be as dumb as you would lead us to believe. So, if they really aren’t as dumb as you would want us to think, the only other choice is unpatriotic. They want us to lose this war, Bob. You get it? They make the public comments all the time, to be recorded for all posterity. They want us to LOSE, Bob. For what? Their own selfish personal interests, that’s what. That is what most Americans call unpatriotic Bob, but not you. All of you political hacks on both sides, are relying on what has always worked in the past, to help advance whatever agenda you all deemed the best way to win. The world is changing, people are getting more information everyday, and most uf us are sick of all of you. I’m no republican, Bob. I’m a true red-blooded American, and the republicans have betrayed me, but do not get all high and mighty to try and keep your un-American liberal friends, from being called out on the carpet. If you’re really wanting to help the dems, get Obama to keep his mouth shut. Every time he speaks, he gets in more hot water. And I didn’t even call you names…..

Well Bob, I agree that you have the right to express your opinion and that your love your country etc etc. Tell me how many liberal speakers are shouted down while trying to deliver a speech, pied, protested. Where is the love of free speech then? How many hatchet jobs have been done on Democratic leaders, how many reporters followed up on the numerous failings and convictions of Democrats.
Yes, this Republican Congress has screwed up. I would remind you that they DID have to deal with the most devastating attack on our homeland, the worst natural disaster and a slowdown in the economy. Perhaps this had something to do with the start of this mess. They then bought into the whole Washington mindset of giving to get. They give out perks and special treatment and they get re-elected.
And speaking to that, perhaps they have handed out more pork than Democrats, I don’t have the time or resources to fact check your assertion but I would argue that Democrats passed more laws to constrict citizens activities that have saddled us with entitlements and constrictions that try to bend people to how your want them to be because you couldn’t convince them with logic or you just didn’t trust people to do the right thing.
As to Global Warming, in the 70s it was the Coming Ice Age. Why don’t you in the press ever talk about that dicotomy? Face it, the reason there is “overwhelming evidence” for global warming is the FUNDING comes from Liberal Groups who seek to control the wealth distribution and cut America down to size. There are plenty of scientists that disagree with the conclusion that People are affecting the Normal fluctuations of the planets climate. They don’t want solutions to the energy problems of the world, they want restrictions and controlled conservation. In my Christian upbringing I was always taught that we are Stewards of God’s planet and as such we should live as gently as we can on the earth and take care of it. That informs my choices and is what I have tried to pass on to my children and the people that I interact with on a day to day basis.
If you don’t want the government telling you what to do, how to live vote Libertarian

When you talk about Obama’s tax plans on Fox and Friends recently you neglected to cite jobs created and his insane plan to double the long term capital gains tax which could cause the stock market to fail. Jobs created covers the entire period of the tax cuts. Obama has an insane comment on our ability to have all the oil we need here at home.We can be energy independent while we search for alternatives. The economy can be laid at the feet of the demo controlled congress.Obama is ignorant on the economy ,the war,the supreme court nominees, and his attaining the White House is the scariest thought of any election in my 72 years. He is an empty suit and the nefarious influences on his life will bring him down.He claims to be a christian but denies the basic tenents of Christianity making him as Cal Thomas says,..”a false prophet…”

Bob,

Well spoken, and I agree that we should be able to disagree on the basis of logic, beliefs and/or theories without trying to reduce the humanity of the “opposition.”

While it is true that the Republican leadership has done a horrible job of pursuing a conservative agenda during six years of a Republican Congress under a Republican President, and that the party leaders seem to be trampling the conservatives who put them in power, most of us aren’t ready to abandon conservatism. I disagree with most of your points on the basis of incomplete summary of the facts, but that’s the way political punditry works (we all cherry pick from the other side’s record as it suits us).

As one of the “flat earth” believers you referenced, I have to address point #7. I firmly believe that the global warming fad will eventually be revealed as one heckuva global chicken little moment, but probably not before we damage a lot of local and global economies in the process. Consensus is not science, and connecting two lines one inch apart to draw a line one mile long doesn’t generally get you to the right place. Politics, “science” and investors/economics are too deeply intertwined in the global warming side right now for me to believe much of what they say as the results of thorough, dispassionate scientific research.

Conservatism is in a slump right now, but bad times historically bring out the best in people. The church and the conservative movement will either stand up when the time is right (post Soviet eastern Europe, American church revivals in the late 1800s) or they will fall flat on their faces (see 2001 to 2007 USA). I’m not giving up the good fight, I’m just buckling down for some bad days where I’m the minority but I’m willing to stand my ground. Maybe we’ll debate some day, but today I’m satisifed with this forum to toss my two cents into.

Bob,

You almost got it right. Don’t confuse a rejection of conservative leaders with a rejection of conservatism. As part of the vast right wing conspiracy myself, I can say that there is little that makes us angrier than the fiscal irresponsibility of the current Republican leadership. Core conservative values are of governmental frugality and individual responsibility. In other words, the government should only be doing what the Constitution says it should do and let its citizens be responsible for themselves. If a candidate credibly stood for these values I think you might find yourself in the minority again……..

See if your simple, tiny, hard-wired liberal mind can follow along:
lower marginal tax rates = MORE tax revenue
higher rates = LESS revenue.
Want to pay for sprawling federal government? Lower the rates and boost the economy.
Since the top 5% of taxpayers “contribute” about 85% of the funds, you can’t lower rates and not have them benefit most. That the rich benefit most from tax cuts is because they ARE paying their “fair share”… and then some. Yes, we all know saying this will not generate a lot of class-warfare votes, but there should be some weight given to truth, not just to political expediency.

By-the-way; I know liberals like to credit Clinton with balancing the budget, but as I recall, he was dragged (kicking & screaming about “fiscal irresponsibility” ;) into balancing against his will. Saying Bubba was responsible for the surplus is like saying jailed felons are responsible for lower crime rates.

As far as hypocritical political leaders goes, well… I wonder, how “diverse” is Hyannisport? Betcha there’s not a lot of “affordable housing” units butting up to the Kennedy compond. That’s as likely as Al Gore buying a Prius and moving into a tent. (ahem.)

That pretty much takes care of points one through three of your left-wing temper tantrum…
Your point four is fair - the GOP was no better than the Dem’s when it came to ear-marks (although Sen. Byrd is the one who made them into an art-form).

On #5: just once, I’d like to see the accusation of lying accompanied by an example thereof. Remember, we invaded Iraq because the inspectors were blocked- something no one disputes. It wasn’t that we KNEW there were WMD, but because we couldn’t be SURE there weren’t any!

On point #6: at what point did providing insurance become a Federal responsibility? The SCHIPS proposal was going to be extended to thousands (not “millions” ;) of people (not all “kids” ;) with incomes up to $70 thousand. Trying re-reading the tenth amendment sometime.

Finally, you refer to Global Warming- the cause-of-the-day. Instead of dismissing the reasoning of thousands of scientists and millions of others, maybe you could investigate it- just a little bit? The current best evidence indicates that any climate-change has been a response to variations in solar output, not industry. Further, CO2 seems to rise in respoonse to warming, not in advance of it. That makes sense, sinse there is more CO2 suspended in the oceans’ waters than in the air. Behaving similarly to a glass of soda, the seawater gives off CO2 gas when it warms. Any liquid-gas equilibrium will move toward the gaseous side as temp’s rise, that’s just Chem 101.

In short, you’ve made one semi-valid point- the best you’ve come up with is a single instance where Conservatives are almost as bad as Liberals. Nice job of writing… if you lose this gig, you’re next position will probably involve the phrase “can I super-size that for ya?”

well - this is the third time i have tried to post a comment (maybe my viewpoint isn’t worth reading) Bob i have to say you break my heart. I have spent 15 months in iraq and it is the one thing in my life i am the most proud of. I met people who have lost their entire families because of sadam’s anger. I have seen children 9 or 10 years old get thier first shots and their first pair of shoes. I wittnessed the first FREE elections in Iraq and saw the tears in their eye from being able to finally vote. I have also seen by brother and sisters lay down there lives for the better of the world. Bob - remember every time you smash this war and MY Commander and Chief - you disrespect every life lost in this war. I have the feeling you are a lot like Obama, you can bash the President and this war but you don’t have the b*lls to step foot over there and see what you can do - you can’t even understand the most basic manner known to any of us - respect. Before you get on your high road and look down at ANY party - take a look around at the world. Would you feel the same way if your family were victims to terror? would you be a total a** if you had stand up for this counrty - really stand up? If all you are going to do is complain how awful things are here in america - then i urge you to buy a one way ticket to Iraq and walk in their shoes. but, alas you don’t have the spine - just the mouth to b**ch.

Comment by MikePalos

Too bad your article isn’t based on facts. Kinda like all Dems _ignore the facts thinking people will believe you albeit some will _the Dumb ones. Here’s just one that sticks out like sore thumb. You say 1 trillion dollar surplus, well the facts are quite different; ie.
Dec. 21 (Bloomberg) — President Bill Clinton left office in 2001 with a federal budget surplus of $127 billion.
A far cry from 1 trillion, but then again, Dems don’t do numbers well (otherwise they’d be Republicans). The lack of overspending was done by the Congress of the time (Republican control). You may not know this, but the president doesn’t spend money, only asks for it to be spent or not. With many times neither is heeded by Congress.
Yet another major topic you missed (and you miss a lot). The gov’t received record amounts of tax revenues after the GW tax cuts. What happened to the surplus? Was it used to reduce the Natl debt?

Comment by Joe

Mr. Beckel,
I appreciate your comments, and your sentiments. I have seen you on FOX, and do not believe that you are a “Commie”, or unpatriotic. In fact, you argue conservative points better than so-called conservatives at times. Disagreeing with me doesn’t make you unpatriotic. It means you disagree and nothing more.
I am a committed conservative, and I left the Republican Party after the 2000 election, when I realized that conservatism had been abandoned. I worked on the campaign of Dr. Alan Keyes in SC, and it was through him (and the treatment he received) that I realized that Republicans were every bit as power hungry as Democrats, and that both Parties consistently put the good of their Party ahead of the good of the Country.
Now I vote Constitution Party, and I am told often that I am throwing my vote away. How am I throwing my conservative vote away when I vote for a conservative (we are talking an actual conservative who adheres to real conservative beliefs here)? If I vote for the lesser of two evils in Sens. Obama and McCain, then I am still voting FOR an evil, FOR my country. I have spent the past 16 years of my life serving in my country’s military, and I am not about to abandon the people or Constitution I am sworn to protect.
So, I wanted to let you know that conservatism isn’t dead, it is merely waiting for the right leader to emerge once again. Do not allow yourself to be fooled into believing that Sen McCain, or Mitt Romney, or Arnold Schwarzenegger carry the conservative torch. They merely carry a candle that they are desperately trying to hold to Goldwater, Reagan, TR, Lincoln, and other great Conservative leaders.
In the meantime, the U. S. Military awaits the orders of the Commander in Chief, whomever that may ultimately be.

Bob,
I do hope you really do read this as with everyone here. You are correct, the American people or at least the majority are under the impression that the leadership shown by Bush is lacking, however that does not in fact make the case that the leadership is indeed inadequate. Maybe the health care for millions of children was denied but how was that to be paid for? Was it a good bill, and if it was such a great thing why could 2/3 of congress not agree to it? Now the problem is that the Dem controlled congress talks about all the great things under the Clinton Aministration yet as any politcal science student can tell you Fiscal responsibility spending and all the great things that come with it are CONGRESSIONAL issues so the surplus under the Clinton administration should be given to the Congress of the time and not Clinton’s term of office nor should the Bush Admin be given the blame for the bugeting problems now faced. But as a poor middle class guy who the Dems claim to help why is it they continue to TAX my Capital gains like I was some rich walls street investor and claim its only the rich that where Taxing. Now Socialism is a fair theory to debate and works in many European countries however I do not feel like it will work here for many a multitude of resons. We have ethnic groups that feel discriminated against. Unions that don’t consider the cost of there demands to those that employ them and then argue about jobs being sent overseas. A person getting paid 20 dollars an hour to put cars on a tire makes more than a teacher that has to buy the car makes for a unresonable demand if the price of the car is a years salary to the buyer. Now to touch on a few more issues Ret Gen Clark, who company is kept by Dems argues how wrong the plan was for invasion or whatever military advice shall be given yet a a Gen in the army he has a duty to his men that if he thinks a plan is unattainable to Resign in objection to it and he did not feel it was or his resignation would have been on The Joint Chief desk Blaming others as a commander for a plan you had input into and carried out is a cheap and dishonarable to the men whom served. As for the Bashing of Bush and the games and tanting about his speach is that really the message we want to send to children that if you have a disability and try and become an important figure it gives everyone free riegn to make fun of you. And while where on charecter of people please again tell me why Ted Kennedy is so respected, or Jane Fonda all supporters to the Liberal cause not that liberalism is a bad thing persay but Being a killer and a traitor each of the above being one or the other is and why defend such people. We worry about detainies found in a war zone someone should read the Geneva convention fighters can be held as POW tillt he duration of the war is over and as such the war not even close to being over. So many distorted issues lets get back to simply debating facts and ideas not retoric and name calling and decide what plan the majority like not who looks younger or has the better looking wife. O and does it really matter if I wife of someone makes 5 million or 5 cent its the candidates ideas that are issue so to all the news reporters on both sides cover the issues not pretty clothes or money people make its not a matter.,

Bob, I agree with you in part. Conservatives are angry. Our party was hijacked by a bunch of politicians that claimed to be conservative Republicans, but spent money like Democrats. Our values and beliefs are not being repudiated in this election….corrupt, inept Republicans are. You would think these folks were all raised by Byrd or the machine in Chicago. The Republicans will lose both houses, no doubt. Conservatives lose the Whitehouse no matter who wins, it is just a loss by degrees. What is more interesting is what the Democrats win by losing the Presidency. They have a committed centrist in McCain, willing to reach across the isle. This pack of knuckleheads, (generic term for this group of legislative losers), could actually get something done, and if it doesn’t all go according to plan, they can blame McCain. The country could benefit. If Obama wins, know one but he knows what that means. Does he go back to his liberal roots, and make the looney left happy, or does he become a bit of a centrist himself, and infuriate the left and all of the Hillary supporters that will realize that he has adopted her platform? If he goes left, we get this generations Jimmy Carter. If he becomes a centrist, it is mostly McCain light, (Supreme Court aside).

In any event the opportunity for conservatives is the “Contract with America II”, in the next election cycle, if someone in the conservative ranks will grow a spine. The republic can take any of this election cycles scenarios above, our framers new we would elect inept, corrupt, useless power hungry dullards, that’s why we have checks and balances. As for me, I will cling to my guns, religion and bitterness, and wait for the government to fix all of my problems. Or more likely, when they screw it up like almost everything else, I’ll look for true conservatives to step forward so we can take back our party and country.

Oh Bob it is OK There is probably not going to be a Democratic President for a long time becuse the American people are going to wise up. We can all live in harmony, we will be in charge once again and you can give us trouble like you always do. Maybe this time around people will wise up and vote for the right president and the right congress people . We are not worried about the war or global warming , what matters to us is education, gas prices and food prices. Do something about those things and leave the other things alone. The war is almost over but the gas prices are not coming down, and there is no such thing as global warning it is all a scam by Mr. Gore! Keep bashing us we can take it because we are true Americans.

It’s interesting (but sad) how many respondents took the time to support Beckel’s key point–veering off into irrelevancies with terms such as “comrade” and statements like, “stand up for what America stands for, freedom to the people who love the Constitution and love our Father in Heaven”–without bothering to address the factual statements he offered.

Of all the responses listed, the only one with validity was your first one. I’ve seen you on TV various times, and the person that called you an idiot had it right.

Oh Bob! I can live in harmony with you and your liberal pals, but just at a distance. We will be in charge and you guys will just listen! I have every bit of confidence John McCain will win now because if he doesn’t the world will come to an end as we know it and it won’t matter any way.

… And there it is. As usual, the semi educated and neo conservative “christians” come out of the woodwork when an opposing opinion emerges. When did the constitution get nulified? I had been taught all my life as a child and now as an adult that we are free to disagree, but bound to defend each others opinions in this country. That is how a Democratic Republic Nation works. Yes, you read it correctly; Democratic Republic Nation. See how Democrat and Republic work together to form a nation? That is the core of our Constitution. Freedom, bound by unity. The limitations of liberty. Seems like an oxymoron, but you are free to disagree. The Republicans should serve some cheese with that whine. Conservatives should be so with their blithering as well. Liberals? Exercise that idealogy with forgiveness. Obama will most assurably be our next President. Not that I am happy with that, it just happens that it will obviously be the direction that a vast majority of mislead voters will flow. Not that this will be a victory for Liberals. This will be a victory for Global Jihad. Islam will see a great revival on a global scale unlike any religion has ever seen. This will lead to an increased number of attacks on US soil. I don’t like writing this, I just see it clearly and frightenly real. Not because Obama is a closet Muslim, but because he will tolerate them all through both his terms in office. Yes, this man will get elected and re elected and after we as a nation will lament such action. Just as was the lament over the Clintonista years. When the economic improvement looked good on paper, but couldn’t survive the challenge of reality. The back door was opened for Usama Bin Laden and his crew to flood Europe and the USA with sleepers that would eventually be captured and sent to guantanamo and then the nay sayers would scream abuse when these animals would be used to acquire intelligence needed to fight a “Global War On Terror”. Which quickly became a “War On Terror”because the Democrats didn’t like the word “Global”. Unless it was used to describe some sort of a warming trend that is simply a matter of Earth doing what it always does. A trillion dollar deficit is small price to pay for not having to fight blood thirsty violent terrorists in our own backyard the way England and Spain and France and Russia has had to because our leaders took the fight to them and not wait for them to bring back to us. That takes courage. Oh, lest I forget. Of course President Bush is Arrogant. Name a single President in our history that wasn’t arrogant. You have to be arrogant to believe that you and only you can lead this country and in so doing lead the world better than anyone else. DUUUUUH!!!

I know. The Republicans were in power for sooooo long. Of course, we can’t mention any of the good that has come out of the Rep. House and Senate. No, no, no-(as Rev. Wright would say), this can’t be spoken of. It would be interesting to see just how many times the Dems worked with the Rep. on issues. As a Proud American I would like to see our governemtn working for the good of the country and not the good of the party. I hear it said that Iraq is going bad and the world doesn’t like us-well, where have they heard this since Pres. Bush was elected-I’ll tell you. They have heard it from pundits mouths, the press and the Congress and Senate on the other side. Just once I would like to feel that it isn’t about the good of the party, but the good of the country. If we were truly united, instead of allowing the politicians and the pundits to divide us, we could be doing amazing things and make great strides on the international front. Sadly, it is all about getting elected and the good of the politician. If this weren’t true, we would have seen the Dems crossover and work with the Pres. on several issues-Iraq a main one. One ups manship does not help our country.

Bob you hit it on the head. Conservatives are not that anymore they are Neo Conservatives. They are for big government, legislative morality, world police, nation building, massive spending, no balanced budgets, and on and on and on. They truly have lost their way and thats what a guy like Ron Paul who got NO attention from the Main Stream Media but yet still managed more votes and more money from the likes of people like Rudy Guliani and what not. Im afraid the Republicans will get smashed and they will keep getting smashed until they kick out the Christian Right, Big Business, and Israeli lobby that has hi-jacked them.

First let me thank you Mr. Beckel for you observations regarding conservatives and Republicans. It had to be said. With that being said, does anyone out there who calls themselves Conservative, really understand the meaning of the word? It means to conserve, to keep things as they are without change. Can you imagine what this country would be like if there was never a progressive approach? So unless you are not interested in progress, I wouldn’t be so quick to label myself as one. Secondly, the Bush administration has run this country into the ground. By now, EVERYBODY in America knows the war in Iraq was waged based on false intelligence. THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANY WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION, folks! And as far as the argument regarding the fact that we haven’t had a terrorist attack since, just how many terrorist attacks have we had prior to 9/11? Save it. I do know this, though. We have so much crime here in the US - Hell, who’s going to save us from us? The Bush administration has admitted to that!! Watch other news information channels, such as CSPAN once in awhile and stop relying on mainstream news, especially Fox, to give it to you straight. Far as less government, I say Hell no. Do you know why you pay taxes at all? It’s for the services our government. Should I need a school loan or need medical care and a little money to retire on, I’m entitled. And how do you think our elected officials are paid? So it’s not just welfare recipients and illegal immigrants that get it. Think about it. Suppose YOU get laid off? Ever heard of unemployment insurance? Who do you think pays for that? Become educated and get to know who represents you in Washington. Check out how the voted (this is public information) on the internet and see if they really do have YOUR interests in mind. The Bush/Cheney administration IS conservative and I’d be willing to bet, they don’t worry about the price of gas at the pump (after all they are oil men), losing their job or house foreclosure like so many of us do. Food for Thought.

Dear Mr. Beckel,

I agree that both parties have not been respectful to each other. Thank you for saying that we (conservatives) are nice people. When Bill Clinton was President I never publicly disrespected him even though I found his actions repulsive. He used the office of the President of the United States for sexual dalliances, which I found personally and morally disgusting but out of respect for the office I never disrespected him. I wish Democrats had the same respect for George Bush who has acted with honor and has been embroiled with terrorists and hard decision since the beinning of his term.

Best regards,
Steve Russell

I AM A REPUBLICAN AND AM NOT COMMENTING ON YOU AND YOUR VIEWS. I JUST DON’T KNOW WHERE ELSE TO PUT COMMENTS ABOUT FOX NEWS. PLEASE DO PASS THIS ON TO THE MANAGEMENT OF FOX NEWS.

MY FRIEND SAID TO ME THE OTHER DAY THAT SHE DIDN’T WATCH FOX NEWS MUCH ANYMORE BECAUSE THE STATION WAS PRESENTING ITSELF AS PRO-O’BAMA. I TOLD HER THAT WASN’T TRUE, THEY WERE JUST SHOWING BOTH SIDES. WELL, I WAS WRONG! TODAY MY HUSBAND AND I WATCH THE PROGRAM ON SATURDAY MORNING AND MOST OF THE TIME WE DO WATCH FOX NEWS. THE PROGRAM WAS SHOWING ALL THE THINGS O’BAMA WAS DOING AND WHAT HE WAS SAYING. THERE WAS ONLY TWO MENTIONS OF WHAT JOHN MCCAIN WAS DOING OR SAYING. THERE APPEARED TO BE THE ASSUMPTION THAT O’BAMA WAS GOING TO BE PRESIDENT!

THIS IS ALARMING TO ME AND I WANTED SOMEONE TO KNOW THAT WE AND OTHERS ARE NOTICING CHANGES ON THE PROGRAM. IT IS VERY DISTURBING TO US. PLEASE PAST THIS ON TO THE MANAGEMENT — THEY SAY THAT YOU ARE BEING FAIR AND BALANCED BUT WE HAVE NOTICED THAT YOU ARE STRAYING AWAY FROM THAT. FAIR AND BALANCED HAS BEEN THE REASON SO MANY WATCH IT.

THANK YOU.

Mr. Beckel, leaving aside the many, many factual errors in your post for the moment (there was never a surplus anywhere near $1 trillion, the current deficit is nowhere near $3 trillion, several bipartisan Congressional investigations determined President Bush did not lie or mislead the public in regards to Iraq, etc.) I’d like to take issue with your assertion that conservatives are angry because we feel that “conservatism is going to be rejected on an unprecedented scale” this November.

First, with several of the points you brought up (deficits, wasteful pork, etc.) the public is angry because Congress is spending too much. If conservatism were being rejected, as you claim, wouldn’t the overriding public reaction to the increase in pork and spending be positive? The fact that people are upset at this behavior by Congress is evidence that people are not upset by conservativism, but by the LACK of conservatism.

Second, I wouldn’t be too sure that the election is a done deal for Obama. Just one year ago everybody KNEW Hillary Clinton was the inevitable nominee and almost certainly would be elected (defeating Rudy Giuliani in the process.) Anything can happen between now and November and if the nomination process was any indication, anything WILL happen.

Third, you decry the lack of civilityof comments to your earlier post yet turn around and denigrate those who question climate change dogma as “The Flat Earth Society.” (I guess the 31,000+ scientists who signed a petition rejecting the so-called global warming consensus can be charter members: http://www.petitionproject.org/ ) So on the one hand you criticize people for attacking those with whom they disagree, then turn around and attack those with whom you disagree. The next time you want to criticize people who do not practice what they preach, I suggest starting with the face in your bedroom mirror.

Fourth, spare us the whining. Yes, some of the comments to your earlier post were rude and abrasive. For you to cast that anger as a conservative phenomenon is ridiculous in the extreme. Name one commentator on either side of the aisle who doesn’t receive angry, hateful responses to what they write. And let’s face it, some of the worst, most disgusting vitriol you’d never want to read spills out of the liberal side of the blogosphere. By your reckoning, since the election is in the bag and the country is apparently poised to reject conservatism, liberals should not be angry. Yet go onto any liberal blog and see the kinds of things they are writing about Jesse Helms this weekend. The next time you see Michelle Malkin, ask her about the kind of hate mail she gets on a daily basis. How many liberal speakers at universities have ever had pies and other material thrown in their faces, or had their talks disrupted? Your side of the political aisle has more than its fair share of nasty people, Mr. Beckel, people who disagree with conservative politics but feel no need to do so with any sense of civility. When have you ever taken even a minute to criticize them?

Comment by J Yarbrough

As usual all of Bob’s comments were geared against conservatives. Nothing was said as to why Liberals’ and Marxists’ achievements were the driving forces to gains made by them. He gave no credit to the money and effort spent by their side to manipulate the media, the entertainment industry, and academia.

Congress has the lowest ratings. If a witness can be subpoenaed to testify and be jailed for lying to Congress, why can’t Congressmen, and their staff members who provide them material, be jailed for perjury for the content of their statements and content of their questions?

Mr. Beckel, I’ve listened to you since you were an alternating co-host on Pat Buchanan’s radio show, I think back around the late eighties or early nineties. You’re one of the “common sense” Democrats, although firmly planted in partisanship. Even Rush Limbaugh has a respect for you.

But surely you’re not suggesting that America is ready to swing wildly to the left? There’s much to be dissatisfied with Republican leadership, as you’ve pointed out. But evidently Democrats aren’t making the folks any happier since they won the majority in 06 according to numerous polls conducted over many months.

Both mainstream Parties are chock full of dead wood. Who’s going to be in better shape a few years from now, Republicans who look in the mirror and realize fundamental changes are needed, or Democrats who are blathering on the same 35-40 year old failed ideas and policies?
Average Americans are not on the same page as either Party. The first Party to recognize this and change{for real} will be the one best situated for the future, IMHBCO.

Where is the leadership in the Democratic (?Dumbocratic) party? I use to vote often for Democrats, but not in several years. Where have you all gone? And I think you took most of the Republicans with you! No one is left to vote for!!!! Ha!

Bob,

You complain about the few abusive messages, totally ignore the salient points made by the majority of your detractors and then reiterate a list of discredited Democratic talking points. And yet you want us to take you seriously?

Comment by Jean

We go change from the libs two years ago. We were promised lower gas prices. Since then, they’ve almost doubled.

Climate changes? Read George Carlins views on that. May he RIP. Such arrogance, to think we can stop the cylical changes of earth, that have always been. DUH!

The change I want to see is a pay cut for Senators, and Representatives. The perks….ie, free cars, gas, and travel priviliges. Pay for it like the rest of us have to, out of your own paychecks. Start putting money into Social Security. You don’t now, so how can you possibly understand the fix most of us are in, or will be in soon. You broke it. FIX IT!!!

And finally….put your money where your mouths are. You want a green planet? Lead by example. Go live in your cave, no lights, no car, no money, hunt for your food, and pray to God PETA doesn’t catch you. This seems to be where you want all of us to be in the near future, so LEAD THE WAY!!! Hypocrits!!!

p.s. Yo Bob? Might want to tell George Soros to stop hoarding oil, and creating the spike in oil prices.

Thai nationals have called Soros “an economic war criminal” who “sucks the blood from the people”

In an interview with The Washington Post on November 11, 2003,[24] Soros said that removing President George W. Bush from office was the “central focus of my life” and “a matter of life and death.” He said he would sacrifice his entire fortune to defeat President Bush, “if someone guaranteed it”, and many continue to state this as Soros’s position even after Soros clarified the humorous nature of the statement in a Q&A session at the end of his March 3, 2004 address to California’s

Kinda makes me wonder what levels he, and his kool aid drinkers would stoop to, to get their yes man in office.

Obama’s Greed Will Destroy America, Indeed!!!

Bob, you ignorant slut.

I love braggarts! They always look so silly when they finally get their just reward. Conservatives angry? Yes, finally you got something right. We are angry. We’re angry at the do-nothing congress over the past 8 years. Yes, that includes Republicans, but also includes Democrats who refused to allow needed legislation to move forward, important judge appointees left to dangle in the wind and of course the dems refusal to even consider an energy bill.

Are you referring to the same anger your party exhibited after the 2000 Presidential election and continues to do so with vile comments and accusations, all of which have proven to be false?

Bob, you no more believe in “global warming” than I do. If you did, you would lose 150 lbs right away to curb the massive greenhouse gas you must be spewing daily into the atmosphere. And I’m sure your family and comrades would certainly appreciate that as well.

Bob, if you are right and the country decides to turn the keys to this nation over to the likes of Obama, Reid, Palosi, et-al, then you had better be looking for a new job, maybe even retirement. Even fast talkers like yourself will not be able to explain away the misery this country will be dealt under the completely asinine leadership of the dems. You and your party have turned American politics into an abyss that may never return to sanity. I hope you’re proud, big boy.

Disgusted with it all …
