Barack Obama Is Not a Christian
By Cal Thomas
Syndicated columnist/FOX News Contributor
Religion is a topic that makes most journalists uncomfortable, unless they can expose hypocrisy — as in preachers who speak of virtue while carrying on an affair — or outrage such as Rev. Jeremiah Wright and the doings at Barack Obama’s now former church in Chicago. Most journalists think taking religion seriously might require them to study the claims of various faiths and too many of them have already decided this might lead them to a faith higher than themselves or politics and they don’t wish to take such a journey of personal discovery.
That is too bad, because such an attitude exposes one of the main gaps between most Americans — who believe in God — and most journalists, who don’t.
An exception is Chicago Sun-Times columnist Cathleen Falsani, who interviewed Obama in 2004 for her book, “The God Factor: Inside the Spiritual Lives of Public People “and asked him specific questions about his religious beliefs.
“I’m rooted in the Christian tradition,” said Obama, who has declared himself a Christian. But then he adds something that most Christians will see as universalism: “I believe there are many paths to the same place, and that is a belief that there is a higher power, a belief that we are connected as a people.”
Falsani correctly brings up John 14:6 (and how many journalists would know such a verse, much less ask a question based on it?) in which Jesus says of Himself, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” That sounds pretty exclusive, but Obama says it depends on how this verse is heard. According to Falsani, Obama thinks that “all people of faith — Christians, Jews, Muslims, animists, everyone — know the same God.” (her words)
If that is so, Jesus wasted his time coming to Earth and he certainly did not have to suffer the pain of rejection and crucifixion if there are ways to God other than through Himself.
Here’s Obama telling Falsani, “The difficult thing about any religion, including Christianity, is that at some level there is a call to evangelize and proselytize. There’s the belief, certainly in some quarters, that if people haven’t embraced Jesus Christ as their personal savior, they’re going to hell.” Falsani adds, “Obama doesn’t believe he, or anyone else, will go to hell. But he’s not sure he’ll be going to heaven, either.”
Here’s Obama again: “I don’t presume to have knowledge of what happens after I die. When I tuck in my daughters at night and I feel like I’ve been a good father to them, and I see that I am transferring values that I got from my mother and that they’re kind people and that they’re honest people, and they’re curious people, that’s a little piece of heaven.”
Any first-year seminary student could deconstruct such “works salvation” and wishful thinking. Obama either hasn’t read the Bible, or if he has, doesn’t believe it if he embraces such thin theological gruel.
Obama can call himself anything he likes, but there is a clear requirement for one to qualify as a Christian and Obama doesn’t meet that requirement. One cannot deny central tenets of the Christian faith, including the deity and uniqueness of Christ as the sole mediator between God and Man and be a Christian. Such people do have a label applied to them in Scripture. They are called a “false prophet.”
I hope some national journalist or commentator with knowledge of such things asks Obama about this and doesn’t let him get away with re-writing Scripture to suit his political ends.

Mr. Thomas, you are right on with this column. The Bible does clearly state that “NO man cometh unto the Father but by me.”
I hope a lot of people read this column and then stand back and take a good look. Of course, you know that you are going to be hung out to dry for writing the truth, because, as you stated, most jounralists will give whatever Mr. Obama believes a wide berth.
We tend to forget that this country was founded on CHRISTIAN principles, by men who were God-fearing and honest men. I feel like some of them would turn over in their grave at what is going on
in this country today.
Thank you for being a voice of truth and reason with your columns. You are appreciated more than we can tell you.
First and foremost, for those of you who have the views that Obama it not a Christian, please take a moment to go here and let him explain his views on his faith.

Now I will say this. I find it so hard to believe the judgments raining down from my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. There is FORTUNATELY no one on this blog who will decide my salvation, or anyone else’s salvation for that matter. You know, one of the big reasons why our ancestors settled here in the first place was for our freedom to worship as we feel we have been called. Using Christianity to run our government would be not so much different from a communist country telling all of their people they can’t practice their faith in Christ. It is not Christianity if you FORCE IT!!! What is important is to witness to lawmakers, so that Christians are in office. We need to help those who need us, no matter what we think of them. My God and Savior is a BIG God. He is bigger than America, and he is certainly bigger than us. He doesn’t only care about Christians either. The worst person in prison right now has as much love from God as I do. So would it be so far stretched to think that maybe he would not be as Conservative (politically speaking) as you think he would be? JESUS WAS A RADICAL!!!!! Was he not? REPUBLICAN SHOULD NOT MEAN CHRISTIAN!!!! Democrat should not mean non believer. Barack Obama does not believe personally in abortion. He is however a Democrat. Could you see him running on the Republican ticket? Anyone? Correct me if I am wrong, but a Republican has been in office for eight years, and yet abortion is still legal. Why not choose someone who wants to fight poverty and teach children responsibility, which in turn helps our young ones make good decisions in the first place? No, you chose someone who stands on an idea…but does not do ANYTHING about it. Oh, and about Gay marriage. I think it is wrong, but at the same time our government can’t push our own convictions as Christians down peoples throats. Christianity is beautiful because it is a choice….MY CHOICE. America is beautiful because we do not tell people YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE THIS. WAKE UP MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!!! Jesus is not running for president…he is bigger than that. He belongs in peoples heart. Not in our government!!!!!
Onward Christian solider going to IRAQ for the Love of Oil and the Glory of Wall Street that the right wings do ADORE. Bunch of hypocrites if you think that God is omnipresense omnipotent and omniscience what are you in fear of.
By definition, a Christian is one who places their belief in Jesus Christ as their sole source of salvation. To say that there are other ways to God besides through Christ is contrary to Scriptural and Church teaching. Barack Hussein Obama is not a Christian, pure and simple. People outside the church cannot say who is and is not a Christian. Can a boy join the Girl Scouts, and call himself a Girl Scout? Regardless of what he thinks, or regardless of what others think, he cannot. It is the same with Christianity. Our Holy Book, the Bible, says that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Different renditions of this verse are found throughout the Bible, and it is the general theme of the Bible.
One cannot call themselves a Muslim and believe that Muhammed is not his prophet, or that his writings carry no weight. One cannot call themselves Christian and say that Jesus is not the way, the truth, and the life, and that nobody can come to the Father, except through Him.
WE LOVE YOU PRESIDENT OBAMA

Solution: Tell all of these poor people to get off there dead ass and start working?
or
Maybe the 2 billion so called Christians could do with a little less.
What is really, really scary here is the fact that people are having an intense discussion about whether or not someone running for political office in the United States believes in mythology. Do we really have time to focus on something as unimportant as religion at a time like this. The church has no place in government and the government has no place in church. And stop quoting scripture as if it’s evidence against Atheism. Most atheists are what they are because they have researched and done their work. The longer conservatives keep Americans uneducated, the longer these pipe dreams will continue.
SHUT UP YOU STINKING JESUS FREAK!!!!
Guess what??? 99% of Americans dont give a rat’s a-zzzzz if he is a “real christian” or not. We are electing a president, not a preacher……We already had 8 years of a “christian” president and look where that got us….No thanks!!!!
Face it folks, Obama is gonna be the next president…that is a fact
It is a new world and a new era for America…time for tolerance, happiness and peace. Americans have had it with the war mongering, fox news watching repubes and home schooling jesus freak retards. If you right wing bible thumpers can’t deal with it drop dead…it is our world now!!!
Get over it……..you had your chance and look what happened
I am Mary faye from Colorado, and if you dont like what I said stick your bible up your a-zzzzzzzzz
First of all, the article did not at all judge him. Barack said that he was a Christian, which opens him up to be judged by other believers in Christ. However, we as believers, are to judge him by the truth of God’s word, not by taking the scriptures out of context or man’s opinion (denominational dogmas).
Speaking only to those who believe and follow the Bible:
Yeshua (Jesus) said himself to the BRETHEREN at the temple in John 7:24 “Judge not according to the appearance, but JUDGE righteous judgement.” Brethren are only allowed to judge one another and ourselves by the God’s word, which is our standard. We cannot judge NON-BELIEVERS, so the non-believers are correct! Only Yeshua (Jesus) has the right to judge the non-believer.
Although I am not voting for him for president, I will keep him in prayer so that he would confess, repent and truly be converted unto salvation.
Lying? After 8 years of the Bush admisitrations lies…………….it would take a lot to top Bush, something along the Nixon type.
These church types have been making jackasses of themselves for years……….Fallwell & Robertson were two of the biggest boobs that used religion, so now we get a few more morons spotuting their stupidity from the pulpit.
Why don’t these “men of God” just shut the hell up, and quit making asses of themselves at every turn.
Reminder to all the Christians out there, our God is bigger than all of those out there who are against Him. Be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. I don’t trust Obama, (or any politician for that matter) but if he becomes our president we should pray for him as well. What would be best is if Obama saw the truth in scripture, and understood what Jesus said about himself, and came to a belief that could truly cause change.
There is little use proselytizing with people you don’t know on these forums. They will not come to know Christ in that way. It is better to make relationships with those you know, and let your deeds show them that Christ is in you. Those here may hate us, but we can still love them.
It is only God who can open their eyes. Until he does …
“Though seeing, they do not see;
though hearing, they do not hear or understand. In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:
” ‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
For this people’s heart has become calloused;
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’
He’s a false Christian. He will bend over backwards for Muslims, here and abroad. Mark my words. We are screwed.
In America, we like people who are smart, who know how to speak using proper English, and are polite. Mr.Obama has a good command of the English language and he knows how to speak to people in a comfortable, encouraging way…you have to give it to him. But, his voting record is, from what I have heard from good sources, one of the most liberal of any one in the Senate. That should be a BIG RED LIGHT!
His campaign…the whole Dem campaign has been masterful; they are on the news day and night and hardly a peep is heard from the Republicans. It’s like that old saying (I’m 66, so I know)..”out of sight, out of mind”,and most of this year the Republicans have been out of sight. So much for many people who only vote for a person because they see them on T.V.
Mr. Obama may believe that Jesus is his Savior, but it sounds like he doesn’t believe that Jesus is the “only” Savior. Jesus made it simple…and he made a guarantee for whosoever will may come. No one has to do Jihad, no one has to be perfect, no one has to do anything but come to the water of life and drink freely. Why do we make it so hard? Who in their right mind could ever think he or she could qualify for heaven where everything is totally pure, perfect, and righteous. COME ON. The only one who could do that is God himself, and he did…in the body of his son, Jesus.
Let’s pray that we can get out of this lukewarmness we are all in and remember this is a ‘FIGHT OF FAITH”. And, let’s all be thankful everyday for God’s blessings on our nation that we enjoy. We have so much to be thankful for. We can be thankful that we can voice our opinion on this Website. We can be thankful that we can worship and believe without being put in jail..or beheaded. We can be thankful that God has opened windows of revelation for things like the lightbulb, the automobile, the over the top technology we have…and we can be thankful for and love our fellowman..that includes Mr. Obama, Mrs. Clinton, and Mr. Mccain..and all the Dems, and Reps, and yes our enemies…isn’t that what Yeshua said. We don’t have to believe what they believe or bow down to their gods…and we shouldn’t ..even the god of tolerance. But, we have to care enough to pray that God will open their eyes to the truth.
We have a great nation, but we have an AWESOME GOD..and he can do the impossible. Keep the faith my friends.
Has Obama or his wife been baptised? The oly comment I have heard is that Rev? Wright baptised his two daughters.
I’m saddened by the fact that a “Christian” nation such as the US would allow a man like Obama to get as far as he has in the presidential election. As a student of rhetoric and communication arts, it is not difficult for me to see that Obama is not a great man with great ideas, but simply a great orator whose main goal is that of persuasion of the public. Unfortunately, he is doing quite well to reach his goal.
It’s time to start listening to what Obama is really saying and the ideas behind it, and realize that we can’t hand our nation over to a man like him. His only legitimate promise of change is that of higher taxes… and that’s about it.
Reading the commentary on Cal’s predictable blather explains a lot about how we got where we are right now.
Whether Obama meets Holier-Than-Thou-Cal standards for being a “christian” is totally irrelevant to anything beyond Cal’s own brand of prejudice.
Those that buy into Cal will love it, those that don’t, won’t.
I don’t.
Well said, Cal. This man needs to be exposed for what he is - and what he isn’t.
this guy sucks as a writer… hes just an obama opposer tryin to get closed minded idiots to jump on his wagon… obama was baptized as a christian… therefore he can rightfully say he is christian… the reason Cal sucks at writing is because he is being ultra-critical of obama’s words when all obama is trying to do is describe the nature of his faith. if we all did everything the bible says then the world would suck… everybody would have beards going down to their waist and we would practice chastity before marriage… nice try Cal but the rational mind can easily see your pathetic attempt to downplay obama.
OBAMA 08
I agree Jay P…….we all need to humble ourselves and pray, and turn from our wicked ways,……this nation is going down the wrong path and if we don’t history proves that destruction follows.
Cal,
People like you and the majority of the people who have commented on your article scare me, and make me wonder if mankind will survive another 100 years.
Please understand how the Bible, Koran and other religious texts were created, please understand that religion is about love, tolerance and respect.
And please understand that if we let the Bible decide the future of all Christians, the Koran decide the future of all Muslims, and all other people be govern by their scriptures, this world is not going to last and the whole point of God´s creation be wasted.
I am dumbstruck by this article and some of the comments posted. The intolerance of another’s brand of Christianity is absolutely full of bigotry and hatred.
I can see why they interest in evangelical brand’s of Christianity is on the decline and they are branded as fanatics. Cal, you just did a great disservice to the Savior with this piece of journalism.
I have one last comment on this thread to all non-believers in Christ, athiests, druids and whoever else that may qualify, about my faith and my choice to believe in Jesus Christ. You may judge me and my beliefs based on the example of others but my faith was not easily obtained nor will I readily abandon it to others. At the end of the day Christianity and those that truly represent it will become the next victims of a holocaust much greater than the one inflicted upon those of World War II. (This will be a dilemma that will one day plague this world, whether or not to exterminate the Christians so the world can transition into the new age. How it is presented, can be left to some conjecture, but hate speech toward the Christian and an indoctrination of tolerance in our schools has been in full swing for a few decades in many countries. Perhaps I will lose my job or one day go to jail for saying homosexuality is an abomination to the Lord. This may seem just in your thinking but it totally dissolves any concept of a new age, evolving or higher thinking as it will only eventually lead to total control by the state and then the utopian government once envisioned becomes a prison.) It is with amusement and interest I read many comments from non-believers, in a wide variety of media and information venues, that are so quick to belittle and attempt to dehumanize my person and my faith and more specifically Jesus Christ. There really is no love, compassion or TOLERANCE in any of their content, but yet they assume a superior, enlightened attituded. I can only assume they adopt this position because they have a different belief system that is vehemently opposed to Christ. What I question, and everyone needs to examine, is why such hatred towards Jesus Christ and His followers. The true church of Christ and His love, life and example exceed anything that will ever be created by man and when we reject His free gift of salvation and then as humans die (for man is appointed to die) and then face judgment (for every knee shall bow) it will then be an individual choice that will have eternal consequences. If anyone wants to remain adamant about not accepting Christ then I reserve the right to pray for you, but please stop being so critical and hateful of my beliefs. We truly do not hate anyone and we would love that all come to know Christ.
Obama & his team are really great at marketing - don’t think anyone can deny that, & most everything I’ve read concerning his campaign includes comments on how well it’s been run. Now Marketing 101: 1st do no harm, 2nd be whatever your prospective client/customer wants, 3rd ask for the sale, but NEVER, EVER ask a question that can be answered “no”, & 4th, believe with every part of your being that the sale has already been made.
Looking at Falsani’s interview in that context, Obama said just what he felt fulfilled those guidelines, and in fact may have said too much for some of his fans - “do no harm” includes primarily not saying anything that someone else can take exception to. The odds that Obama revealed any true insight into his beliefs are about the same as almost any other politician when asked about any touchy subject.
On the other hand Mr. Thomas’ headline is 100% accurate - undeniably. Can someone claim to be a truck driver who’s never learned to drive? Can V.P. Cheny claim membership in the Democratic Party? You don’t always get to define the rules of membership. Long before we were born & long after we die Christianity will center on a belief in Christ, just like any other type of religion has it’s core beliefs that are worshiped. That doesn’t say Obama isn’t religious or spiritual or maybe even more correct in his beliefs that most of us. It does say that to claim to be Christian, by definition you have to accept (one would hope believe in) Christ - period. Christianity may be pretty laid-back (just ask some cartoonists in hiding for contrast), but that’s pretty much the biggie. If someone doesn’t like it there are plenty of alternatives, or like many before you, form your own.
The bottom line is integrity. Which candidate has been caught exagerating and caught in a lie in public.
Would you want a president who is going to lie to you so easily.
In response to Comment by Thinking: Think of this: Obama rejected and left his church because he was forced to out of political purposes. If you hear Obama’s comments, you clearly here him mention several times he does not know how this would affect his political career. There is no other reason why Obama chose to do this-plain and simple. If there evidence to the contrary, it would have surfaced. But, more importantly, he would not have separatd himself from his church if the adversities and shocking contraversies had not come to our attention. Again, simply, he would have left a long time ago if he felt truly offended by what was/is taking place in the HOUSE OF THE LORD as many were and are.
Let GOD be the Judge of who goes to Heaven and Hell. Another point, Christianity is not the only faith that opens peoples hearts to Jesus and GOD.
I believe the moral of this article is if you claim to be something-make sure you are what you say you are.
AMEN…
To Jay P! Yes, let us all pray. It does not take much effort or background investigation to see that the quality of persons running for higher office in this nation has been lowered to a point that is very disappointing and downright shameful. Between Romney, Obaman, Clinton and McCain I would say, without tongue-in-cheek or any joking, we are soon to be under God’s direct judgment. God is in control and He will use any one of these as He deems fit; so by any and all means pray without ceasing that as a nation we will turn back to God and repent.
For all of you who truly believe in Jesus Christ, please let’s all get together and pray to Him for the outcome of this election. It sounds like America is on shaky ground, and only God knows who will be the best for this nation of ours. Let’s all get on our knees, and humble ourselves before our great and awesome God, and ask Him to direct our hearts and our votes, so that we can vote in the one HE wants to win…..that’s the only way our country will be what it should be….
From everything I see and hear from the candidates, the news media, and the people across this land, we have a great need for prayer and for God’s intervention in this election. I truly believe a vast number of people in America have truly lost their way…..our nation has been blessed because it was formed from a desire to have freedom to worship God, and God has continued to bless us because there are still good Christian folks in this land….but it sounds like we are not being heard or taken seriously because there are those “so-called Christians” who have tarnished the name of Almighty God and His teachings…
Please, each of us who are Christians, please pray for our nation…..The Lord says, “If my people, who are called by my name, shall HUMBLE themselves and pray, and turn from their wicked ways, I will heal their land”………we definitely need healing, because it’s not just Washington that’s broken,…..it’s the belief system of our people….a great many Americans have lost their way…
By the standards of the Bible, to determine one’s Christianity is not that difficult. By Obama’s own admissions, as stated in this article, he questions the very basic tenets of what it means to be Christian and in doing so denies Christ. In the American culture we are taught, for the past 30 years, tolerance and acceptance of other faiths, beliefs and lifestyles in the name of cooperation and unity. These ideas, whether we like them or not, are contrary to what Christ is all about. We are to love but not tolerate sin nor endorse faiths that have paths to God outside of the work accomplished by Christ on the cross. To do so makes a mockery of our own faith and understanding of God’s word. Sadly, I firmly believe that all recent Presidents and candidates for the office have become political talking heads when it comes to their so-called faith and Christian beliefs. All in an effort to garner votes and be acceptable in the eyes of a gullible and trained public that they are Christian and still adhering to the principles of the founding fathers and the origins of this once great nation. The current president is probably the most disappointing example in my recent memory, which goes back to president Kennedy, of a self-declared born-again Christian consistently and repeatedly denying his faith in favor of policy and politcal expediency. There is only one Jesus and He paid the ultimate price and it’s our acceptance of his life, death and resurrection that will guarantee our entry into heaven. If God judges us harshly as a nation, it won’t be because the majority of us are still Christian, it will be because of the vocal and powerful minority that have turned this nation away from God because of their choice to deny God and want to replace Him with their own ethics and ideas of a more compatible and palatable faith system. This minority not only wants to embrace this system they want to force it upon all others as fact. God bless and protect all of His church at all times and I pray God will intervene and keep Barack Obama from ever becoming the president of the U.S.
Response to Cmmntr,
Narrow is the road that leads to life and wide is the road that leads to destruction (or something like that). Look it up. You’ll be glad you did.
Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven….it’s not a particular brand of religion espoused by fanatics…..it is in the Bible….which is the true Words of God….so if you don’t want to face the fact that Jesus Christ, Himself, gives us the only direction, then that is up to you. Jesus Christ came down to this earth as a human being, and died a human death to save any one of us that will believe in the power of His shed blood to cover our sins…..Christianity is a way of life….not a religion….it is belief in God the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost…..it meana that you truly repent, give Him your heart, and let Him rule your life, by trusting and believing in Him, and knowing that He is the only solution….Christianity is a PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP with God…not a church affiliation, not a religious sect, not just believing in Jesus….it’s an acceptance, and a willingness to try to live your life by HIS commandments, and when we fail, go to Him to cover our failings…..True Christianity is denial of self and the uplifting of Him….it is being SUBMISSIVE TO HIM…Whether you folks want to believe it or not, Jesus Christ is alive and well, and in the end, He will have the last word…..it’s in the Bible, and all the things that are going on in our world today, has already been foretold…..and if you don’t truly believe and have a true relationship with God, thru Jesus Christ, then you better be getting prepared for what’s coming……and I don’t think Obama has a clue…..nor do a lot of people in our country and our world today….if they did, our country would not elect some of the people that are in positions of power, and our world would be a much better place…..Get ready, for the Kingdom of the True and Living God is at hand……read the Bible….it’s all in there.
Response to Erich Fenton:
You miss my point - that being that most of us don’t care whether Senator Obama is a Christian in name or in fact. My preference is that he acts in ways that the true teachings of Christ, or Ghandi, or Martin Luther King exemplify. Wouldn’t you rather have a person assume the presidency who acts in this way rather than someone who pronounces themselves a Christian but in no way acts like one? That is my point. He can call himself a Moslem, Jew, or Bhuddist for all I care, as long as his words and deeds are peaceful, helpful, and compassionate. In other words, the exact opposite of what we’ve had for the last 8 years. A deceiptful regime; a wolf in sheep’s clothing; what you may call a “false prophet.”
I believe it was C.S. Lewis who also, when addressing the very topic of the way or ways to God, said the following: “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” – Mere Christianity, pages 40-41.
When Jesus said “no one comes to the Father but by me…” he was saying exactly what he meant. It cannot be left to interpretation. Cal Thomas is right. Obama is not a Christian. I came to the same conclusion long ago when I heard him describe his ‘conversion’ experience. It rang completely hollow. He did not say one word about being a sinner in need of a savior, or feeling the need to have Christ in his life. Now…having said that, it is just an observation. It is ultimately up to God to determine where Obama, or anyone else for that matter spends eternity. But I truly hope someone as disingenuous about something as important as faith will never get my vote!
It is interesting to see, as expected, the fire storm such comments about Obama’s faith have triggered.
It would be a false statement to say that Obama has professed to being a strong Christian belief. In the article quoted, it was stated he was raised with Christian traditions. In true politician form he side steps direct answers.
Of course, one who knows the bible can counter John 14:6 with John 16:25. Also note, none of the other 3 gospels make even a vague claim of excluding those who believe in God from Heaven, for not recognizing the divinity of Christ. Muslims, by the way, believe in the same God, but recognize Jesus as a prophet rather than a deity.
It doesn’t really matter if Obama is a Christian, Muslim, Jew, Buddist, Hindu, or Druid. This is America where the 1st Amendment welcomes all faiths. Of course, the 1st Amendment doesn’t protect hate groups, which the preaching of his former church would qualify as. His recent departure is a few years too late to be sincere.
What matters more is the fact that he’s so clueless regarding the military that he confuses his own family WWII history to the point of being comical. I guess having an Uncle liberate Auchwitz sounded better than the reality of a great uncle liberating a less famous work camp in Germany, or his own father serving in the Kenyan militia as part of the British army in Africa. Regardless of the fact that he has no uncle and Aushwitz was liberated by the Soviet Red Army.
Good job Mr. Thomas. It takes guts to tell it like it is. You show that you are more concerned about something higher than yourself or postion in this world-otherwise you sould not have written the article. Sign of a true Christian I might add.
Cal I agree.
Could you also report that NEVER in US history has a president rejected and left his church.
Christians like to believe in belief in god; and that’s driven by fear. Next time you use your influence to call someone’s beliefs into question, you might want to consider your own, why you have them, and why you really believe that the bible is the truth. Anyone not blinded by faith can see that the bible is not a divine document, nor is it truthful. Most can be said about all ancient texts.
So just because you still believe in the tooth fairy doesn’t mean those who don’t are somehow unworthy of the presidency. Get a life.
Talk about re-writing Scripture to suit his political ends?! Mr. Thomas uses his Bible for his own politics that seem quite unlike the politics of the Jesus. He lifts verses out of context. John 14:6, for example, is found in Jesus’s most intimate conversation, spoken with those who were closest to him. They were pastoral words spoken to those who were worried at his leaving them. That verse is not meant to be a hammer to exclude those we do not agree with.
My Bible also judges those who claim to be religious (a Christian) to exclude others. Jesus said “By their fruits you shall know them.” As a Christian I cannot abide the warlike fruit of our current president. Neither can Jesus, who also asked religious leaders when they showed skepticism at his offer of forgiveness to the lame (unclean) man, “Is it easier to say to say ‘your sins are forgiven’ or to say ‘rise, take up your bed and walk.” In other words, don’t talk the talk for your own ends, walk the walk!
We are not a Christian nation by any means and never were, but I will support and pray for our nation’s leaders who help us to more closely walk in the path that might resemble the footsteps of the savior.
Non-Christians don’t like Christianity because there is judgmentally, there is a definite morality, right and wrong, there are not gray areas. And there is exclusivity, the Bible states that there is only ONE way to salvation and that is through the acceptance of Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior. The Bible doesn’t leave any opening for any other way; some folks just can’t handle that. They want their good works to be enough. Obama’s view is one of universalism, many ways to the same point. He’s mistaken.
A lot of people here are critical of Christians for being judgmental or hypocritical. Just because a person is “saved” they are not perfect, they still have a basic sin nature. Christians do sin, and must ask forgiveness, but their sins after they are saved do not condemn them.
Narrow is the gate that leads to heaven and few there are that find it…and wide is the gate that leads to destruction and many there are that enter through. There is only one way to heaven and that is through Jesus Christ…He said so himself (John 14:6). The reason no one wants to except this free gift of eternal life ,that Jesus offers to anyone in the world, is that they want to hold on to their own way of life, but Jesus asks us to surrender our lives to Him and He will give us eternal life. There is no other way. Regardless of how offended you may be by Jesus’ exclusion of other ways to heaven it is no less true.
I’m an atheist conservative, now there’s a rarity. I was lucky in that my family never pushed religion on me as a child, so I was never indoctrinated. Religion is like smoking, if they don’t hook you while you’re young, you have a good chance of never getting hooked. I’ve studied the world’s major religions from a detached, clinical viewpoint, and they are all silly. Not one can back up anything it claims with any kind of evidence. I don’t give a rat’s ass about the religious beliefs of any of the candidates, as long as they aren’t zealots.
Now, the racist “kill whitey” attitude of the church to which Obama was a member is an issue. Either he agrees with it, or he is too stupid to have noticed it for 20 years. Either way, it should disqualify him for the Presidency (not to mention his socialist policies.)
Before all you holy rollers start melting down, I am not anti-religion. I think the atheists who file lawsuits over the Pledge of Allegiance are an embarrassment. The Constitution provides for freedom of religion, not from religion. Religion (except for Islam) is also very helpful in laying down ground rules to keep civilization running. I don’t care if people behave themselves because they know that is the only way society can function, fear going to jail, or fear punishment from an invisible man in the sky.
PS- Don’t bother to respond and tell me I need to find Jesus in my heart, or anything along those lines. It’s annoying.
I have a question that folks like Cal never answer. Christians like Cal tend to take text out of the New and Old Testament and use the words to their advantage. Let’s take homosexuality. Cal and his friends always point to Leviticus and point to the sentences that prohibit same gender sex. Yet they completely ignore rules about working on the Sabbath, eating pork (how was that Easter ham Cal?) and the proper way to treat slaves. Slaves Cal! Cal and his buddies all ignore the sections of the bible they wish to disregard and then cling to the parts that meet their needs. I know Cal, millions of Muslims, Jews, and Buddhists etc will all burn in Hell, but you and your pals will enjoy the fruits of Heaven. Your ancient brethren are the same guys that tortured and killed thousands of people throughout history in the name of Jesus, you are the same guys who stood by and watched priests molest innocent children but if those same priests invoke Jesus’ name they get a free pass. Mr. Swaggart picks up a hooker in Indo CA, cries and gets a free pass. If that is heaven…you all deserve each other.
It would be refreshing to those of us who are not American, but who are all affected by who sits in the White House with their hands on the levers of world power, to witness a true separation of religion and state in the USA. We find it astonishing that in order to be elected President of the USA a candidate must wear his/her Christian credentials on both sleeves and try to “out Christian” the next candidate in order to secure office.
The lack of objectivity that a devout fundamentalist Christian possesses can be witnessed in both the current global and domestic policies of the American State. From the teaching of Creationism to vulnerable and impressionable youth (what happened to science which is objective/measurable/challengable ?) through to draconian laws stifling medical research that could save many lives, and the policies implemented in the Middle East by the Zionist Christians in the American Government. Policies that are designed to reflect the teachings within The Revelation.
Are Americans blind to the fact that many of the current global problems are either caused by, or enhanced by, a fundamentalist Christian President ? One who has a poor grasp on history, and an even poorer grasp of self awareness and his personal impact on the world. Some Christians may say that Mr Bush doesn’t display the actions of a true Christian, however i would suggest that many more hold him up as a true Christian President that is the shining example of what an American Christian President should be.
Then let me say on behalf of those who are the enlightened people from the “Christian” West that we don’t want a Christian President of the USA. We want a President who is objective, open minded and not hampered by religious dogma. We want a President who embraces other faiths and is prepared to engage with those who are non Christians. Step up to the plate Mr Obama, declare that you are an Athiest and get on with dragging your country into the 21st Century and join the rest of us.
The 21st century is apretty good place to be and we will welcom you with both arms.
Cal…..you and all your right wing wackos crack me up….you jesus freaks are desperate ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
You fundies, home schoolers, jesus freaks and neo cons had better get one thing straight….and you better do it fast
Obama is going to be the next president…….and he is gonna rock your world!!!!! hee hee hee
your “christian” president Bushy poo screwed everything up for you guys…now as he runs off into the sunset with his tail between his skinny coward a-zzzz, you guys are gonna be left behind….the forgotten bible thumping walmart freaks in Obama’s new happy sun shiney world…..ha ha ha
WE LOVE YOU PRESIDENT OBAMA
good ridance jesus freaks
How you can judge whether or not someone is a Christian is very clear: “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” What Obama belives is clear by what he says, and what he says is that he does not believe that Jesus is the only way to salvation.
Belief in, and acknowledgement of, that idea is what DEFINES who is a Christian. By his own admission, according to the very scriptures he claims to follow, Obama is not a Christian. Period.
I was born and raised a Christian and I know one when I see one! All of these people who are voting for Obama in spite of the negative things about him, should read Revelations. Especially the part about false prophets and the anti-christ. When I say I won’t vote for Obama its not because he’s black, it’s because he’s a racist and hates America in spite of the advantages that America has given him. If he is elected President every black person in America will take it as an opportunity to take it out on us white people. I have already been a victim of reverse discrimination but as the saying goes “You ain’t seen nothing yet”
Wow, everyone has something to say and attacking this article in thier own way. All I have to say is that there is only one way to look at this whole thing. The man writing this article did his job, he got your attention and got you thinking. For those who support Obama I feel for you because I am totally against him. He definitly speaks like a politian WITH A FORKED TONGUE. For those of you speaking about Christianity there is only one way to be saved and that is to accept that Jesus died on the cross for us and to save us from our own sins. Jew, Gential, Muslim what ever! The only way you will not go to hell is to accept Jesus as your savor!! That is it. Not by good works, not by voting for the different politicians, and not by getting rid of the death penalty. ONLY THROUGH JESUS!! I have my own opinion about the right canidate, but that is another issue. Unfortunatley, we do live in a very judgemental world with many different opinions and everyone thinks they are right. Get saved and live your life like Jesus would that is all he wants.
Apparently, Obama has been listening Oprah and her ilk.
Thank you, Cal, for exposing him and his faulty ideology.
If you do not believe in the basics of Christianity then you cannot call yourself a Christian. This is pretty basic stuff. Why would you want to call yourself a Christian but not believe in the fundamental truths? I find that puzzling.
The only reason we associate ourselves with anything is due to the fact that we believe it, or in it. If you do not believe it then you should not associate yourself in it. It’s pretty simple.
No one is judging Obama’s life they are judging what he says. If he says that he does not believe in the basics of Christianity then by all means he cannot call himself a Christian. This is Kindergartnen stuff people.
Hello ultra-religious wackos and ultra-liberal stuck-up nincompoops,
Can I have my political party back? I’m sick of crazy intolerant people hijacking our political parties. On the right we have the aforementioned crazies, and on the left we have the people who insist that there is no god and anyone who thinks so is a stupid uneducated hillbilly.
CAN THE REASONABLE PEOPLE PLEASE SPEAK UP, because I’m starting to feel like I’m the only sane person left in America.
Are we capable of having real discussions about anything anymore? Doesn’t anyone use their brain anymore?
I would think we have bigger issues to debate, than a candidates religion, or how he/she acts in accordance with that religion…
Are the newsworthy stories so diluted, and the news cupboard so bare, that we are forced to read opinionated articles like this, that are only written to begin arguments?
I AGREE WITH MR. THOMAS…..I GUESS MY QUESTION TO MR. OBAMA WOULD BE…IF YOU WERE NOT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT, WOULD YOU STILL LEAVE TRINITY CHURCH?IF NOT, THEN YOU ARE LEAVING FOR POLITICAL REASONS ONLY..AND NOTHING CHANGES…I AM A BELIEVER IN JESUS CHRIST, AND BELIEVE THAT TOLERANCE IS FIRST AND OF HIGHEST IMPORTANCE IN MY FAITH..I UNDERSTAND THAT WE ALL QUESTION OUR FAITH AT TIMES, BUT ALWAYS, ALWAYS COME BACK TO BELIEVING IN JESUS CHRIST, LOUR LORD, AND SAVIOUR…I REALLY, CANNOT GET A FEELING AT ALL, THAT MR. OBAMA EVEN UNDERSTANDS THIS…
Wow,
This article reminds of the fear and divisiveness that got the US into the mess we are in now. The fundamentalists and literalists of all religions create these “holly wars” “jihads” and struggles are the reason the world is in the state of suffering that it is. The fundamentalist idea that you have to believe in a historical man that was God is the only condition to receive heaven is ridiculous. The Council of Nicaea is where this fear came from. The council made it legal for the Romans to kill or persecute anyone who didn’t believe in there state religion. That tradition has obviously still around ~1800 years latter by fearful people like this author. I pray that we can overcome our differences and stop nitpicking reasons to hate, fear, and kill each other. Jesus said “Love thy enemy”, which correct me if I’m wrong means people who disagree with you. I am waiting for a louder voice of true followers of Jesus to start expressing love without using division and fear to try guide us. God Bless.
It amazes me how many people believe that they can judge something they cannot possibly know. I do not know of anyone who can read what is in another person’s heart. Only Obama and God can truly know whether Obama is a Christian. Only myself and God know whether or not I’m a Christian! I believe people must truly live “Christlike.” This does NOT mean going around condemning other people or shouting God’s name to the masses…it means treating others as Jesus treated others! Jesus was charitable, and he associated with people that many of us today would probably look at down our noses! Yet so many people want to be so judgmental and critical! We ALL have skeletons in our closets! Most people posting on this site are not educated enough to even use correct spelling or grammar, yet they claim to know the Bible better than everyone else! Who was it that said “If anyone here is without sin, then they may throw the first stone?” THAT WAS JESUS! I truly believe that we need a change in this country, and I believe Obama is the candidate for that change. I am against abortion, but I do not feel the need to condemn abortion doctors or those who have gone through an abortion. That is not my place. That is God’s place. How can so many people claim to be Pro-Life, and yet turn around and support the war and the death penalty? If we are Pro-Life, should we not be for ALL life? How can we, mere mortals, decide who is not worthy of life by condemning them to the death penalty, the ravages of war, or even inadequate healthcare? Yes, this is extreme, but I want to make a point. If someone is on the radical right or claims to be a fundamentalist, then open your eyes to EVERY extreme, not just the ones that you choose to harbor only to further your own agendas! I will vote for Obama because I believe his actions and the change that he desires to promote are the MOST Christlike of any candidate.
Depending on your personal interpretation Obama and the literally millions of other people with beliefs similar to his may or may not be Christian. But I’ll take his brand of Christianity over that of the narrow minded who have turned modern Christianity into
